THE 10 BEST Hotels in Dorsoduro / Accademia (Venice)
Dorsoduro / Accademia Hotels
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

- Adriana U9 contributionsA better place to stay - avoid the crowdsI chose this after getting a bit of advise from a seasoned Venice traveller. Definitely better than staying near the piazza. St Mark's square area is vibrant and full of amusement but it is also terribly crowded and if you want some quiet time, you are better of choosing Dorsoduro where you can have both the nice sites and busy areas but also the quiet alleys. As a plus, you get to take pictures without the intrusive tourists and visitors. There are beautiful sites everywhere and a great combination of students and people of all ages sharing the space.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2024
- Michael E6 contributionsPay attention to the art! There is great art here and the Disney visitors across the canal miss this. Learn the whole history of Venetian painting at L'Accademia!!! Then visit Scuola di San Rocco (Tintoretto frescoes), Ca Rezzonico (Tiepolo), Santa Marie della Salute (Marriage at Cana by Tintoretto, Saint Mark Enthroned by Titian) The churches of Venice are loaded with Renaissance masterpieces Finish with Guggenheim Modern Art Start EARLY. Take your time. Try to stay overnight.Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 March 2024
- Christian MCopenhagen, Denmark6,223 contributionsVenice’s Most Charming and Local NeighborhoodAfter you’ve had your fill of the major sights—St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the Grand Canal—where throngs of tourists and overpriced souvenirs dominate, it’s time to head over to the Dorsoduro district. Here, the streets are cozier, the crowds thinner, the osterias better, and the prices lower… naturally, as this is where the locals prefer to spend their time. The only downside is that you might regret not staying here instead. We certainly did, and we’re based in Cannaregio, which isn’t bad at all. But Dorsoduro stands out with its authentic, local vibe.Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2024

- San Marco HotelsThe most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.Read more
- Cannaregio HotelsCannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.Read more
- Castello HotelsCastello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.Read more
- San Polo HotelsThe Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.Read more
- Giudecca HotelsGiudecca is a retreat for Venetians away from the crowds. Symbolically, six metal teeth represent Venice’s six sestieri (districts); the seventh, Guidecca, points away from the others – part of Dorsoduro, but separated by the Giudecca Canal. Giudecca evolved from a center of shipyards and factories to a quiet residential area with a sprinkling of restaurants and bars. The majestic harmonious Redentore church stands as thanks for delivering Venice from the plague, hosting an annual heartfelt festival.Read more
