Know before you go
It's not so much a question of where to stay in Tenby, but what kind of vibe you're looking for. In the center of town you'll find quaint inns, cottages, and B&Bs, all surrounded by top-notch restaurants, shops, and pubs--plus the bustle that goes along with them. Penally, a little over five minutes down the road by car, is a more peaceful option in high season. Bunking down at an inn here, especially in summertime, can offer a calm seaside spot for letting your gaze soften as you look over the horizon. If you'd rather explore Pembrokeshire's inland landscapes--with its endless greenery and country lanes--you can opt for the even more tranquil Sageston, which is a minute away from Carew Castle and has a few quaint guest houses.

Pack some rain gear and your warmest woolies, because you won’t want to miss Tenby’s winter wonders. Plus, it’s a quiet time of year, so you’ll have all of the charm of this Welsh coastal town practically to yourself.

The Welsh coast is at its most dramatic in the winter months, so get set for a thrilling trek to Tenby Castle. It sits high on a hilltop and is almost entirely surrounded by the crashing surf. You can also make the 20-minute drive to Pembroke Castle—where winter skies make the scenery all the more striking and photo-worthy.

This is the perfect time to sip a spirit-warming Penderyn at one of the town’s traditional pubs. Thankfully, bars stay open all winter as do most of Tenby’s shops and restaurants.

Feeling especially brave? Go on and take the Boxing Day Plunge in Tenby’s Carmarthen Bay. The charity fundraiser earns you serious bragging rights—because the water temperatures are freezing this time of year.

If picturesque coastal walks through the wildflowers are your thing, then Tenby—and the entire Pembrokeshire region—is calling your name. While rain is always a possibility, the warmer temperatures and vivid blossoms more than make up for it.

Throw on something red, grab a handful of daffodils, and hit the streets with the locals on March 1 for Tenby’s annual St. David’s Day festivities, honoring the patron saint of Wales.

An otherwise small and quiet town, Tenby comes alive every summer with busloads of visitors. Even with the crowds, it’s hard to top the beaches in summertime. Warmer temps make strolling the town a must (preferably with an ice cream in hand, but that’s just one way of doing it).

Tucked between Tenby Castle and St. Catherine’s Island, Castle Beach is easily among the country’s best with golden sands and an island fort as a backdrop. There are two other beaches flanking the town—North Beach and South Beach—with long stretches of sand where it’s a bit easier to find your sunny spot.

If you’re up for a road trip, head to Pwll Deri, where a massive population of gray seals makes the cliff-backed coast their summer home. Or, head in the other direction to check out Stack Rocke, free-standing pillars of stone that rise out of the ocean. It’s only 40 minutes from town by car.

If the sea is still too chilly for the little ones, give Tenby’s water parks a whirl. They’re kid-friendly and open all summer long.

Fall in Tenby is a favorite for in-the-know visitors—the weather’s still lovely and the crowds are lighter. There’s still plenty of activities going on, and (bonus!) hotel rates drop. It’s a great time of year to explore the region.

Foodies, take note: In September and October, various food and drink festivals make Pembrokeshire one big sampler platter you can snack and sip your way through.

With the arrival of spooky season, you’ll find Tenby’s back streets filled with ghosts and ghouls (there’s even tales of a phantom funeral procession). Haunted tours are a rite of passage every fall.

Winter’s bucking waves are still far off, making fall a gentler time to try your hand at water sports, including sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
