The remains of the largest castle in Devon, in a stunning setting on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin.

Inside an old mill building in the centre of the lovely little town of Okehampton, you will find an amazing museum covering 5000 years of history, geology and the working lives of the people of Dartmoor. In its own courtyard just off the main street (and near to the old Coaching inn The White Hart ) the museum is spread over three floors and tells the story of Dartmoor. A Tourism Information point, with a second hand book section and a cafe, complete the visitor attractions. A car park is available for Museum visitors. There is a lift available but access is over cobbles.

Roadford Lake sits within the stunning surroundings of the Wolf Valley, near the Cornwall border. One of the biggest and busiest inland waters in the South West, the lake is surrounded by a variety of natural habitats, including Culm Grasslands, woodlands, old pastures and orchards.

A 5000 year old Neolithic granite standing stone around which was constructed in the 12th Century a beautiful Benedictine Monastery which is now The Oxenham Arms at South Zeal, set in 4 beautiful acres of grounds with stunning views of Dartmoor. Open Wednesday to Sunday 12 mid day to 11PM

Bowdens Gardens host of two national collections: The National Collection of Hostas and The National Collection of Agapanthus, in a mature, restful garden. There are two additional gardens to visit within 400 yards of the main garden. All these gardens are covered by our unique audio tour gently explaining the background behind the business and the depth of planting and tales of hosta discoveries and mad fern professors! Bowdens sell hostas (of course), ferns and bamboos. Complimentary coffee is served all day in a wooded courtyard area alongside vintage garden books and our retro plant hunter's log cabin.
