The tunnels were constructed in 1940/41 as accommodation for the gun battery above. Today this network of abandoned tunnels is virtually all that remains of these long forgotten defences. You can take a journey into the past on a guided tour of the tunnels with one of our expert volunteers, peering into the darkness and back in time into different world, hidden within the cliffs.

    Truly wonderful
This was brilliant. Visited last week and the guide was Peter. The tour was fascinating, educational and funny. Add to that the beautiful, healthy walk, the jaw-dropping views, tea at the lighthouse. A truly wonderful 3-4 hours

    Fan Bay shelter
Visited Fan Bay shelter as was really good experience. It was about 30 mins walk from visitor centre and quite an easy walk along a well maintained path. Guide was good although felt a bit too much irrelevant information at times in relation to the war.

    Fascinating place - recommended!
Fantastic experience and greatly enjoyed by the whole family. Our guide David was excellent, very knowledgeable and a mine (no pun intended) of fascinating info about the history, construction and use of the tunnels. Free for NT members. 125 steps down to the tunnels, not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties. Hard hats to be worn by all… saved 6ft husband’s head a couple of times.

Why did it take me so long to visit?
8 years after being uncovered and despite living only 4 miles away I finally dragged myself along. I had meant to visit for a long time and was prompted by the uncovering of gun emplacements this year. Spent about an hour there whilst the excellent tour guide, Rod, imparting his considerable knowledge. The guides will tell you why this was covered and it's such a huge waste that the site has not been available to visit prior to 2018. I believe it was Winston Churchill that said "A nation that forgets its past has no future". WELL WORTH A VISIT!

Don’t miss out - there is more than just history on offer!
What an amazing ‘must do’ experience! I’ve been visiting the beautiful White Cliffs for a number of years but never thought to do this. I’m no history buff so thought it might not appeal. Boy was I wrong! It was fascinating - both on the history front and also the advancement of technology at the time (WW2) and the ingenious ways they had to make the shelter function. Then on top of that, the natural elements and sediments and their millions of years in formation was just astonishing and beautiful to see. Our guide, Rod, was incredibly knowledgable and delivered it with the perfect balance of enthusiasm and interest with excellent little anecdotes thrown in. He was entertaining whilst sharing a slice of history in the most amazing environmental backdrop. I enjoyed every second. It takes an hour but it felt like 20 minutes.

    A must visit place!
We had an incredible experience in the Fan Bay Deep Shelter. Our tour guide Andrew was absolutely fantastic, he was incredibly knowledgeable and answered any questions we asked. The amount of history is astonishing, almost emotional when you think about the lives people had down there. It’s a place I would highly recommend you go, a moment in history not to be forgotten.

Fan Bay deep shelter is a must do tour
This is a very well presented hour long tour of a slice of WW2 history that takes you inside the iconic White Cliffs of Dover and back out again where you are greeted with some WW1 history. Staffed by National Trust volunteers who are all enthusiastic and equally as knowledgeable. It’s easy to walk past this but ti do so is ti miss out.

    Well worth the walk
We missed the last tour while at the lighthouse last week so we came back. Parked at the visitors’ centre had lunch and then followed the path across the cliffs. Greeted by some lovely staff and given such an informative tour by our guide. Walked back to the visitor centre and had ice cream, tea and cake. 10/10!

  • South Foreland Lighthouse Hotels
A remote, isolated, pristine-white, solid beacon; a place of innovation and scientific firsts, now also a romantic hideaway and big-hearted family haven, the South Foreland lighthouse stands proud atop the White Cliffs of Dover. It surprises and delights with its warmth of welcome and unexpectedly wistful atmosphere, quaint and charming and yet robust and protecting. Like the Knott family of the past, its current keepers, who mostly offer their time for free, are witness to events and show commitment and spirit in manning the light. Inside the Victorian tower, surprising stories unfold of a unique history that has shaped our world and influenced our travel, our trade, and our industrial and maritime heritage. Outside seemingly endless skies roll away across the English Channel and 21 miles away, the coast of France splits the sky from the sea. Serenity is broken when waves steepen, dark clouds tumble in, the wind lashes and the mouth-watering views are swallowed up. The lighthouse stands its ground and is once again protector, until the calm returns as quickly as it left and butterflies come out of hiding. Arrival is on foot across the beautiful and yet challenging cliffs, thus the lighthouse attracts the more adventurous. None the less, children’s laughter is all around, and the nostalgia of Mrs Knott’s tearoom attracts all generations, those who come to reflect and those who want to find out more about the traditions of the past. From its post on top of the gateway to Britain, South Foreland Lighthouse watches over their past, their present and their future.
