Lovely castle, walks and outstanding vegan cafe
I am a regular visitor to Wray castle mainly for the amazing vegan food at Joeys cafe . We drive for 2 hours and have never been disappointed with their soups, stews, pasties, focaccia sandwiches and delicious cakes . The lovely walks and the castle top off our day once we are stuffed . Highly recommended for vegans and non-vegans, the queue is regularly out the door

    Beautiful walks and nice cafe
We chose Wray Castle after our accommodation suggested it for nice walks. Parking not cheap but as expected with NT. We enjoyed a beautiful walk alongside Lake Windermere and a visit to Joey's cafe which was excellent. We had our 3 dogs with us and they loved the lake side walk. We didn't visit the castle itself as we'd only gone for walks and cafe

    Not much to see inside!
There's quite a walk up from the landing stage before you get your first glimpse of the castle. The outside is very imposing with battlements and turrets which is probably the best bit about the castle because once inside, there isn't much to see! There is a small photographic exhibition of vintage photos but the rooms are empty. The first floor is not open to visit which is a pity as the views across the lake and countryside would probably be very good. There are no gardens but there is a very nice little cafe around the back (Joey's) which serves refreshments - the gingerbread is very good!

    Small, but pleasant
Staff were lovely and very engaging with young children. It's a shame the top floor was not open though due to a leaking roof. So not much there at the moment, but a nice passing visit. Just a heads up the road there requires nerves of steel. Single track with limited passing places for half a mile... don't take a brand new car!

    Wray castle review
We got here with just 40 minutes to spare before it closed so we rushed up to the castle in the hope we could still gain entry. We were happy to be allowed in. It is absolutely stunning inside and out but very bare. And you can’t go upstairs either. I think the national trust could do so much more with this building. Dressing the rooms up with furniture like what would have been used previously would be a good idea. We were in and out within 5 minutes. It has so much potential. This could be a fantastic attraction if only they did a bit more with it. We went to joeys cafe and it cost £19 for 2 drinks, 1 packet of crisps and 1 cake, I thought this was very over priced, we had it in a takeaway cup whilst we had a walk by lake Windermere. We couldn’t drink the hot chocolate as it was too chocolatey. Far too much powder in. We walked with our cups the stretch of the lake which is within the grounds of Wray castle and didn’t come across one bin so had to take it with us on the whole walk. Could do with a few bins dotted about. We did find a bin near the car park upon returning the car in a small area which had a couple of picnic benches. My daughter was excited to point out a section of the lake which she said was used in the film she likes called swallows and Amazons. I haven’t seen this film but I did Google it and she was correct there were some parts filmed here

    Wray Castle Review
The Castles Interior was shocking, So glad we didn’t need to pay. There were a few empty rooms, except for a sparse room with a tv on the wall and a tent in the corner. The upstairs were boarded off along with a few other rooms on the ground floor.. We managed to get in and out within a few minutes. The exterior was amazing. The views were lovely and the outside of the castle was very well maintained. It was nice to walk around late and point out where certain Movies were filmed. The walk was great however it would have been ideal to have a few bins around. The cafe round the back was very expensive and only sold average food, there also wasn’t any bins to put packaging in. The ambiance and the exterior of the location were the highlights of the trip and are definitely worth visiting, but I would not suggest going inside the castle as it let us all down.

    A lovely day out
A striking castle externally. Would’ve loved to have had more access internally. A fab volunteer guide gave us a great account of the history of the castle and its connection to Beatrix Potter. Lovely grounds. Set along part of Windermere lake. Boat tour departs from grounds. Geocaches to find. Restaurant on site very busy but great choice of food! Fresh soup and curry.

    The Wray
Beware to enter you have to travel through Narrow country lanes National trust members. Free parking with membership card Entry free(I think on our visit for all) Gets very busy AM, we arrived 2 pm on first visit and just started to walk when we was informed closing for emergency, so next day same time plenty of parking spaces. The outside of The Wray is great, good views, and some great walks along Windermere lake, Only one room with anything of interest showing history of building with old pictures giving insight to lives lived here, three other rooms bit bare with a tent placed in one?? Inside gives an idea of condition at the time(cold😊) Second level was closed so no idea if anything worthwhile to see. It’s worth a visit and if you like a walk it’s ideal. Staff friendly and informative Toilets available Cafe available

It was ok, avoid the cafe unless you're vegan
The views are amazing and the castle is lovely, there are photos inside of it from years ago which was nice to see. Sadly all other rooms are empty and there is no access to upstairs. Great if you like architecture but that's it. Sadly the cafe was a big disappointment, long wait for a coffee, nice cake but the cold drink options are limited and the fact it is geared towards vegans was a shock. I would expect local produce at least if they don't want to prepare food with meat. Opportunity lost there

    Work underway
Lovely castle (built in Victorian age, so not much history). Currently only able to walk around ground floor & some of the rooms are completely empty. Lots of signs saying ‘work underway’ & that’s why it’s a bit limited in the castle. Great views & walks though.
