'I have always held and proposed against all comers to maintain that the Cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles' - John Ruskin Lincoln Cathedral was for almost 300 years the tallest building in the world. Yet, in spite of its size, it is filled with intricate detail. Remigius, the Bishop who built the earliest part of the Cathedral in the Norman style, came over with William the Conqueror. Later, in Lincoln Cathedral the architects of the gothic style perhaps reached the pinnacle of their art. Everywhere you look there is the most intricate detail, walls, roofs elaborated by the finest carving. From the time of the death of the saintly Bishop of Lincoln, Hugh of Avalon who so lovingly restored the Cathedral after an earthquake in the 12th century, thousands of people have come on pilgrimage to this place of pilgrimage, holiness and prayer. In 1215 another Hugh Bishop of Lincoln, Hugh of Wells, was present at Runnymede along with Lincolnshire's Cardinal Archbishop Stephen Langton. When King John agreed to the barons' demands, copies of Magna Carta were made and distributed to sheriffs and cathedrals throughout England. Lincoln Cathedral's Magna Carta is one of only four from the original distribution still in existence. It is the only one to bear the name of its city.

A fascinating visit to an architectural marvel
Lincoln Cathedral has only recently been released from the scaffolding after many years of restoration work. We wanted to visit it before it becomes too popular with tourists. We started with the free guided tour, and were glad we had - it was a long tour, but fascinating from beginning to end, and showed us so many interesting details that we would otherwise have missed. We went back later to do a guided tour up in the roof. This costs extra, but was well worthwhile. The tour lasted nearly two hours, and would happily have stayed for another hour. Both the guides were highly knowledgeable, but entertaining with it. Lincoln cathedral deserves to be better known, and should be on everyone’s list to visit.

    Amazing Guided Tour!
Well worth a visit. Such a great place, made even better by the awesome tour that is included in the price of entrance. Our tour guide Christine was very knowledgeable, very friendly and made the experience 100x better.

Wow, stunning & fascinating even for those who aren't spiritual.
Quirky & charismatic, both the cathedral & the volunteer guide Jo. The tour is part of the entry fee so take up the offer, that way you don't miss all the things you could do so easily. Wednesday in October at 2pm it was peaceful & not many visitors. The cathedral is stunning & has some really interesting facts that the guide will point out.
Dear Nikki, Thank you for taking the time to leave us this great review. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your floor tour, our guides are so knowledgeable and they love sharing this knowledge with our visitors. We hope to see you again soon. Best wishes, Ruth Visitor Experience Manager

    Worth a Special Visit
Do take the tour that is offered as part of the entry fee. This is a spectacular place and the volunteer tour guides make it all the more special. Without their help you might not learn about the imp! We had the pleasure of visiting the cathedral in the day and then attending a concert in the evening. Wow!
Thank you for sharing your experience of your visit, and I am glad to hear that you spotted the Imp! It's wonderful when you can see the dramatic contrast between a day visit and one of our events. We hope to see you on a future visit. Best wishes, Ruth Visitor Experience Manager

Do check out the timing of the guided tours if you have time
Drove into Lincoln on a whim without much planning. Visited Lincoln Cathedral, or Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln and sometimes St Mary's Cathedral, which construction commenced in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the High Middle Ages. Admission fee is payable before entry into the church proper. Do check out the timing of the guided tours if you have time.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and the tour recommendation! As there is no need to pre-book onto our floor tours, we are a great place to visit on a whim. I hope that you can visit again soon. Best wishes Ruth Visitor Experience Manager

    Admission charges now? Really?!
Over the years when we have visited the cathedral, we have never had to pay a thing. We always donated however. We visited today to discover there is now an entry fee??? £11 per adult!! For so many, it used to be a cheap and cheerfully trip out for families with little income and struggling and now they can't even do that any more. The amount of visitors it gets, at least lower admission costs to make it fair for everyone, not just the more we'll off families. Just as bad as lincoln castle
Many thanks for getting in touch your regarding your visit, we do value all feedback. We have no child admission fee and offer the option to donate or Gift Aid your ticket which generates an annual pass to visitors. Between 10am and 4pm Monday to Saturday, and 11.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday, admission charges normally apply. During this time we offer specific visitor experiences and additional tours. Access to all services is free of charge, and part of the cathedral always remains freely accessible for prayer and reflection. Lincoln Cathedral receives no regular funding from the Church of England or from the UK Government, so we ask our visitors to pay an admission fee, which is an important part of our income. This helps us to maintain and support the Cathedral for future generations. I hope this clarifies the situation and we look forward to welcoming you in the future. Best wishes Ruth Visitor Experience Manager

Cathedral magnificent; cafe staff indifferent with poor service.
A special place we have visited several times and always discover previously unnoticed features and facts, with knowledgable guides to help and reflect on the architecture and history of the English cathedrals. The one disappointment this visit was the attitude of the cafe staff who have little concept of customer service . Do not use the cafe if you expect reasonable service in a timely manner.

We decided to stop over in Lincoln on way home from The Dales. Went on a guided tour with Kenneth at Lincoln Cathedral. What a stunning and very large building. Kenneth was very knowledgeable and made it extra interesting with his humorous storytelling. Highly recommended

    Lovely Cathedral and great guide.
The cathedral is absolutely beautiful with lots of information dotted around which was interesting. We participated in a guided floor tour (which is included in the admission price). Our tour guide, Ken, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the cathedral and obviously has a keen and continuing interest in learning more as he was referencing his recent discoveries. He made the tour interesting and was very funny too. He was happy to answer questions and genuinely seemed to love volunteering there. Thank you 😊

Highly educational tour of the magnificent Cathedral delivered by our superb guide Ken Moore
I visited Lincoln Cathedral with my business colleague from London and what a treat that was. Our guide Ken ‘The Magnificent!’ Moore was incredibly knowledgeable and so much fun with many witty jokes throughout his tour (first organ transplant - still laughing out loud)! Really enjoyed visiting the Service Chapel and learning about the many servicemen and women depicted in scenes around the Chapel. A truly memorable day, thank you.

The tour includes the old debtors prison which now houses some of the finest regalia in England beneath.
