Hotels near Tower of London

The Tower of London is a 1,000 year old castle that protects the Crown Jewels. Throughout its long history, it was a secure fortress, a royal palace, and an infamous prison. Kings and queens demonstrated their power from here, shaping society and influencing our world. Today within the walls of this mighty fortress you can see the spectacular displays of the Jewel House, the Tower’s Mint and the Royal Armouries (including the armours of Henry VIII). Meet the Yeoman Warders, who have guarded this castle for centuries, and the Tower’s symbolic guardians – the Ravens.

Amazing history here! I would recommend being there when they open since the crowds and your groups pick up fairly early. Go to see the Crown Jewels first so you don’t have to wait in line too long. We waited about 5 min to enter but on exiting that section the line was about 5x as long by 9:50 (opened at 9). The first tour by Beefeaters started at 10 and was well worth it. It allowed us to see the inside of the chapel (not generally open to the public) and hear lesser known facts. We then used the audio guide to walk around other sections. It was well worth the extra £5. You could easily spend the whole day here going through all the rooms if you are a history buff. We spent about 3 hrs and saw less than half of the exhibits. I would recommend walking up the stairs to get up to ramparts for a unique view of the tower and the Tower bridge. It also walks you through what the king’s bedroom would have looked like. Be aware that there are a lot of stairs and many places are not mobility friendly. My mom hurt her knee and could only do so many stairs so we skipped some things and we just watched the audio guide for those areas instead.

This was the first time i had visited the Tower of London considering i reside just out of London, and being someone who works in London it felt right to definitely visit the history of my city. The price for a ticket is around £35 and we visited on the bank holiday Monday. When i visited we were lucky to witness the gun salute to celebrate the year anniversary of the Kings coronation, however the weather was poor so i was very drenched! After approximately 62 gun fires we then made our way inside the tower. It was quite busy at this time due to the fact they had to pause entry whilst the ceremony began however it didn’t really impact it too much. When we entered we waited for the tour by the Yeoman who come every half hour. This your walks you to the Chapel where you are inside for approximately 20 minutes and the Yeoman gives you a detailed talk on 1000 years of history, in 20 minutes. The Beefeaters are great, very knowledgable and also straight to the point and down to earth which i like. They were very open to the fact that if you can’t understand English then there’s no point doing the talk as it is all English. After this you can then freely walk around the tower and visit the various towers which contained specific historical aspects, such as the Torture chamber, the white tower (the main tower of london) and also the Crown Jewels. The que for the Crown Jewels was not too bad, only waited five minutes whereas i know sometimes it can be quite longer than that. Most of the places to see there weren’t considerable queues for however as expected there were tons of school groups who flood the areas so sometimes it can be quite crowded within them. My only negative part of this review is the price of food and drink inside “The Armoury Cafe”. I highly recommend taking a packed lunch as the prices were extortionate. A scone with cream and jam was around £5.50 and it wasn’t really anything spectacular., however i did remember that i was in London where everything is just ramped up. I feel this is one of them places that when you have done it once i probably wouldn’t do again for some time as i had seen it. You could probably do everything in around four hours overall.

We had a lovely day out with a 2 and 3 year old who both really enjoyed themselves. They particularly loved the changing of the guards, the ravens and the Crown Jewels. Although there was no queue to enter the Crown Jewels as we left it until later in the afternoon it does get busy inside and some people crowd around the displays way too long so you have to wait to see them. There is a travelator for the major royal crowns which is brilliant as it stops people crowding around them and moves slow enough for you to see them! The beefeaters were very friendly and helpful. One of them was enticing a raven to walk along the wall by offering him food, which the kids loved. There was just a couple of very disappointing points of the day! The food - we ate in the restaurant which was very expensive but worst still cold. My daughter had fish, chips and beans which were cold with exception of the beans which were ice cold like they’d been served straight from the fridge! She returned it but was told it would take about 10 mins which wouldn’t have been ideal when her toddlers had already started their meal and would end up getting bored waiting so she opted to have sausage and chips which comes from the children’s menu, half the price and no offer of any refund. This again was cold the same as the chicken chorizo peppers stew that myself and my husband had. Finally the gift shop - extremely overpriced! My grandson wanted a tiny plastic crown which looked quite tacky but yet was priced at £12…. looking around everything else looked overpriced. You do expect it to be pricey but we were comparing it to the shop at Hampton Court Palace which we had visited a couple of weeks earlier which was a lot more reasonable and the food there was top notch. Overall still had a lovely day.

We went yesterday and had amazing time! Pre-booked tickets with no Beefeater tour, 15 minutes queue for the Crown Jewels from the start point at midday so busy time and shorter wait than expected. The Non beefeater visit was £34 compared to £70+ for the Beefeater and we were in 11.30am until 5pm. Good prices really good too! Couple of Wow! Moments! Awesome day!

My wife and I are easy-going travelers who love history, so visiting the Tower of London was at the top of our list. We used the London Pass to access the Tower, which was one of the many attractions we visited with it during our stay. The pass was a great investment, allowing us to explore multiple sites at a discounted price while keeping our plans flexible. The Tower of London did not disappoint! The tour was incredible—our Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) guide was both entertaining and knowledgeable, making history come alive with fascinating (and often gruesome) stories. Even though it rained during our visit, we didn’t mind at all. If anything, it added to the atmosphere of this historic fortress, making it feel even more mysterious and immersive. As someone who loves photography, I was thrilled by the opportunity to capture the Tower’s imposing medieval architecture, the iconic Tower Bridge in the background, and of course, the legendary ravens. Standing in a place with such a rich history—from royal executions to the Crown Jewels—was truly unforgettable. Using the London Pass made our trip even better. It gave us access to over 95 attractions, helped us save up to 50% compared to individual tickets, and allowed us to be spontaneous without needing to plan every activity in advance. With its flexibility and cost-saving benefits, it was the perfect choice for our visit. If you love history and want an immersive experience, the Tower of London is a must-visit. Rain or shine, it’s an unforgettable piece of London’s past—and with the London Pass, it’s even easier to explore!

We bought a package which included everything, including a tour with a yeoman warden. Our ‘tour guide’ was yeoman warden Gary McCormack who was able to tell the story with a certain amount of humour put in at the right time. We thoroughly enjoyed his entertaining presentation and feel very strongly that he definitely deserves a raise. 👍

Superb visit, spent a good 3hrs wandering around the museum. Loved every bit of it. Only advice is to book in advance and get in to see rhe crown jewels early as big queues can build up after lunch.

Great tour experience of Tower Of London. The Yoeman/ 'Beefeater' - Darren Hardy held the audience's attention for the entire 45mins sharing historical knowledge & 'plenty of humour'. LOL Funny, Entertaining, Knowledgeable. Highly recommend.

London has an abundance of iconic sights even in just the stretch of the river Thames from Westminster Brodge (next to Houses of Parliament and London Eye) to Tower Bridge. Tower of London stands out magnificently and can transport you back centuries as you explore its inner sanctums especially with a knowledgeable guide. Afterwards you can even go and enjoy a drink or meal at the numerous restaurants on the south side of the river in the More London section between London Bridge and Tower Bridge and enjoy a different perspective. (Five Guys has one of the best value views of Tower Bridge)

For the best experience viewing the Crown Jewels, get there as early as possible. We ( who are the definition of *not* morning people) prepurchased the earliest tickets possible which is at 9am. With tremendous effort, we arrived at the Tower shortly after 9am and zoomed across the site to the Crown Jewels. *And walked right in*. It was busy inside but fine and enjoyable. And then you can view the rest of the site at your leisure. By noon, the line for this was stupendously long. We planned this way on the advice of a friend who had to wait in line 2 hrs to see them when he visited the Tower. The rest of the site is very interesting. There is an emblem of a falcon scratched into the wall in the Beauchamp Tower that is credited to a prisoner connected to Anne Boleyn! So much history - it is well worth a visit. Keep in mind it is a large site. We took the audio guide and were at the Tower almost 4 hrs.
