Only partially open what is available is old fashioned and not that impressive.
The castle and parts of the museum are currently closed for restoration. The attached museum building is however open. It consists of a number of galleries around a central café area. The galleries consist principally of displays of stuffed animals, archaeology, and art. Due to their age many of the animals coats are faded, and no longer give a true representation as to the appearance of the animals. Such displays are somewhat outdated and of limited educational value in the days of the internet. Art is very much a matter of personal choice. As such I enjoyed viewing some of the paintings but not all. For some reason, I didn't discover, a few of the paintings are hung upside down. In an upstairs circular area accessed from the café is a small military collection. There are good toilet facilities in the museum. I would consider the 'reduced' admission price of £7.40 to still be too expensive for what is currently available to view. There is however a twilight admission charge of £2.50 for the last hour of opening which is a fairer price. Admission is included in the Norfolk Museum Pass.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review your visit to Norwich Castle Musuem and Art Galleries. We appreciate the comments you have made and we were glad to hear you were able to explore the Galleries that are currently open. The upside paintings are part of an ongoing exhibition we have Mark Wilsher: Five Paintings: Norwich-based artist and curator, Mark Wilsher, has chosen five paintings from the permanent collections to be hung upside down. With this intriguing intervention he introduces the element of surprise into the galleries. This exhibition closes at the end of March. Thank you also for your comments on the current admission price, we have reduced our ticket price to reflect what the visitor journey does include and we are also offering vouchers with bought tickets to our Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell also, which we hope you were able to visit. Thank you

    Partially closed
Unfortunately, the castle is currently closed for renovation work but the attached museum is still open. The museum entrance fee is £7.40 or £7 for concessions, this fee also covers the Museum at the Bridewell, but we felt was still a bit expensive for what was on offer. Once inside, the first galleries contain glass display cases containing stuffed animals which will not be to all people’s taste. From the central café area various other galleries radiate out, we managed to join a guided tour which I would recommend, this took us around the various galleries pointing out some of the exhibits. When we visited there was an exhibition of Industrial Photography of Walter & Rita Nurnberg which was quite interesting.

Probably better when castle is open
The castle was closed. We didn't check before we went so our fault. The exhibits made us laugh hysterically which I am not sure they were meant to. The bonus of doing this was cost also covered entry to Norwich museum. I am sure when castle is open this is way better but I found it the most bizarre collection of items. The stuffed animals were worth it just for the amusement element

    Avoid Kiddies' Saturdays
If your planning to visit the art gallery to see some of the best of the Norwich School (Cotman, Cromer and some Turners) avoid the Saturdays when the gallery is given over to a children's play area complete with rugs, toys, cuddlies and some noisy drums and musical instruments, all of which rather mar the experience. Also, the watercolour gallery is often closed. Shame really: the museum houses some of the best of European painting but like everywhere else, the kiddies are taking over. Sad for the rest of us.

    looking forward to returning
lots of different areas to look in such as teapots, Romans, picture galleries, mummified animals. The toilets were very clean and looked very new! Staff in the cafe were very nice crafts to do for younger children

    Not impressed really
Not impressed really. Exhibits could be improved by putting the writing outside the glass cabinet. Some of the lists are too low down. Seating in exhibit rooms is at a premium. The access for disability is not fab, and only one wheelchair allowed at any one time upstairs seems odd, even allowing evacuation in emergency is the given reason. The goods in the museum "shop" are not necessarily locally sourced, and are really quite expensive. Maybe we should have waited until the whole thing was reopened.

    So disappointed
I love Norwich Castle Museum particularly for its wonderful collection of Cotman watercolour paintings. I had not seen them for several years. I checked the opening times on line and read that the Castle Keep was closed for renovations but that did not bother me. I set off excitedly to see Cotman. How disappointed I was to discover after a long journey that the brilliant Norwich watercolourist's watercolours were not on show. Not a single one. The Cotman gallery was taken over by what I found to be a nondescript collection of prints and etchings by Catherine Maude Nichols. Fortunately their were oil paintings by Cotman in the other galleries as well as numerous wonderful paintings by other artists so I was not entirely gutted. I do hope Cotman will be returned to his proper place and the gallery which bears his name will eventually be returned to him and not to yet another temporary exhibition.
