What a stunning museum which I would describe as probably one of the best small museums I've ever been in. The sheer range of artefacts and exhibits on show, along with the way they are presented, has something to interest everyone no matter the age. Putting so much of a show, in what is a relatively small museum, puts many of the larger counterparts to shame. Every thing from shipping to steampunk; fossils to fashion; adult jet to children's toys and much more are all displayed around a model of Whitby town. It really is an amazing treasure chest of strange and curious objectsd'art gems, coins, fossils and will give a fantastic few hours browsing. Well worth a visit and the few ££s admission is minimal compared to the interesting things you will see. As can be expected, also has a vintage tea room and the obligatory shop.
Thank you for the kind review!

Excellent museum with a very reasonable entry fee! There are real fossils in this museum, which is why there is an entry fee- to keep the fossils in the museum. Well worth a visit! The history is all relevant to Whitby, so for regular visitors it's really quite meaningful.

Absolutely amazing old-school museum filled with treasure! This place is so up my street - well presented exhibits, and tonnes to look at covering every conceivable subject matter. We went mainly to see the 'hand of glory' but actually the rest of the exhibitions were just as interesting - There's enough information to inform you, but not so much that you get bogged down in detail. Plus where we went there was a fabulous section on the history and roles of certain local born women, a fantastic social history overview. We will definitely be back!

This is a hidden gem in the tourism crown of Whitby. This museum is crammed full of the interesting, the historical, the scientific, the curio, the macabre and the other. Excellent stories with links to Whitby and the surrounding area, there is something for everyone here. There are exhibits on inspirational women of Whitby. Spend a bit of time watching the videos and reading the stories in the exhibition rooms. The more permanent exhibits include Whitby jet, fossils, taxidermy birds, models of ships, pre and post WW medals and Captain Cook. However for me the most interesting item is the Hand of Glory. You can read the full story whilst there but if you’ve ever marvelled at the stories of smugglers, highwaymen and folklore (hey, it’s Whitby!) then you’re in for a treat.

This marvellous museum is something of a personal favourite, I must admit. It is, in effect, an exhibit in itself, a perfect Victorian time-capsule. It is filled to the brim with intriguing and often bizarre exhibits, admittedly alongside some of what you might expect in Whitby - wonderful fossils, beautiful jet jewellery and multiple model ships - but it's the curiosities that are particular fun, not least the gruesome 'hand of glory' and, nearby, Dr Merryweather's magnificent Tempest Prognosticator... I leave others to discover their own personal gems.

I've been to whitby so many times but I had no idea this place existed but it's well worth the short walk to visit. The museum has a varied and eclectic range of exhibits, from taxidermy to assorted weaponry, and from fossils to exquisite model ships made by French POWs out of bones! Definitely recommend a visit if you like these sort of golden age of adventure collections.

Absolutely adored this museum and wish I lived nearby to visit on a regular basis. Loved everything about it especially the Edwardian ambience and will certainly be revisiting the next time Im in Whitby. Finished our visit with a spot of lunch in the cafe, a visit to the art gallery, followed by a walk through the park with a great Jurassic garden and play park. So many treasures in this museum.
I love this review! Thank you so much, we look forward to seeing you again.

Plenty of exhibits to see. Liked all the fossil and geology stuff. There was an exhibition of steam punk upstairs. Once you've paid, the ticket will let you come back as many times as you like, for a year. Nice cafe downstairs.

Interesting museum with lots of different displays. Friendly staff. My children liked the children’s area where they could make bookmarks and use the magnifying glasses. There’s a lovely cafe downstairs where we had lunch. Did find the main part of the museum a bit hot and stuffy.
