- Joasi23South Yorkshire, United Kingdom2,052 contributionsLoved itGreat way to spend a cold wet Monday. We pre booked a time slot prior to arrival but that wasn’t really necessary on the day we could have walked in regardless. The engines look magnificent and there was lots of information if you wanted to have a more in depth visit. Don’t miss the huge table that was used to train the signal men . The flying Scotsman virtual experience at £7 was fun, would recommend. Only slight disappointment was the cafe, poor quality and expensive. Take your own food.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2024
- DavidTelford, United Kingdom481 contributionsFantastic for freeWhile all parts of the museum aren't currently open to a lot of work going on it is still a fantastic place to visit. It is free entry with the option of leaving a donation. Some of the trains on show are stunning pieces of engineering and it's great to get up so close to them. Once all parts of the museum are open it will be even betterVisited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 6 February 2024
- Harry SYorkshire, United Kingdom2 contributionsGood for a rainy few hoursWe visited on a rainy February day, the museum has plenty to look at and the staff were very friendly. The admission was free which was a pleasant surprise as not much is these days! Only ‘downers’ we had was the cafe was seemingly expensive but as the entry was free we assume this was to assist with upkeep. The coffees were good so this seemed a fair deal. Our 1 year old enjoyed the visit and we will visit again when she’s a little older when we’ll get something completely different from visiting.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 February 2024
- Glenn KBrisbane, Australia71 contributionsInteresting Look at the History of Railways in the UKI had been back in the early 90s but I didn't find it too much different this time. I guess I was hoping for some more high-tech hands-on exhibits for the adults not just the kids, e.g. access to some train-related computer games and websites. The bookstore & However, tshop was a veritable treasure trove of really interesting books, games and other items. Access to the museum was easy with ample cheap parking across the roadVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024
- Anthony CBirmingham, United Kingdom58 contributionsPerfect if you love railways, interesting even if you don't.We visited on a very busy day in October half term where there were lots of families and tourists enjoying the displays. I confess to not being a railway enthusiast but I imagine if you are then this place is the holy grail. Entry is free and you get an awful lot for that with many locos on display in the main hall as well as huge amounts to see in the open storage areas. There is also an extensive shop which stocked everything you could possibly think of to do with the railways.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 February 2024
- Mark M109 contributionsAll aboard a visit to the railway museumWhen in York a visit to the railway museum is a must. Free entry but a donation to help them maintain these lovely engines is the least you can do. Engines from the mallard to The flying Scotsman and a replica of the rocket are stunning. Even the first Japanese bullet train where you can sit in and experience what it was like to travel at cast speed. There is a VR experience of the flying Scotsman at an extra cost. We spent 4 hours there and still didn’t take it all in. Places to eat are in the grand hall and there is a little shop. If you’re a train enthusiast you really have to visit this museumVisited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 February 2024
- Andy WUnited Kingdom33 contributionsFor all train enthusiasts.I visited with my son and really enjoyed all the trains and information on the boards, as well as the huge collection within the North Shed. It was great to get up close to trains, such as the Mallard and Duchess of Hamilton. This is ideal for train enthusiasts and families. The cafe is pricey, but there are plenty of places in York if you choose not to eat there.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 March 2024
- David CDurham, United Kingdom53 contributionsWas Well Worth A VisitI always wanted to go, and I am glad we made the time to attend. I couldn't get over the size of some of the trains on display. I booked the free tickets online and selected our arrival time; as mentioned, entry is free, but they ask for a small donation, which I was more than happy to make when you see what's on offer. Its around 15 minutes walk from York City Centre.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024
- Rebecca SWisbech, United Kingdom1,311 contributionsHow it’s changed since 1980!As a child I use to go weekly on weekends and collect the postcards that use to be available in the machines. I still have them all! I moved away from the area and this was my first visit since 1980 and how the place has changed. The horse has been pushed to the back of the storeroom which was at the front of the museum on entrance and now thousands of pieces of memorabilia from all over the country. Definitely worth a visit and it did bring back lots of childhood memories of walking from Leeman road on weekends!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 March 2024
- Patric DSandbach, United Kingdom1,077 contributionsBrilliantThsi was a return visit for me after 60 years. Safe to say that it has changed a bit! But in many ways it is still the same. Wonderful locos and other items displayed in an easily accessible way. These days, you cannot clamber all over the trains (you could when I was just a nipper), but you do get up close to the engines and they always impress. It's obviously the best railway museum in the UK, and perhaps the world!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
