    Loved it
Great way to spend a cold wet Monday. We pre booked a time slot prior to arrival but that wasn’t really necessary on the day we could have walked in regardless. The engines look magnificent and there was lots of information if you wanted to have a more in depth visit. Don’t miss the huge table that was used to train the signal men . The flying Scotsman virtual experience at £7 was fun, would recommend. Only slight disappointment was the cafe, poor quality and expensive. Take your own food.

    Fantastic for free
While all parts of the museum aren't currently open to a lot of work going on it is still a fantastic place to visit. It is free entry with the option of leaving a donation. Some of the trains on show are stunning pieces of engineering and it's great to get up so close to them. Once all parts of the museum are open it will be even better

Good for a rainy few hours
We visited on a rainy February day, the museum has plenty to look at and the staff were very friendly. The admission was free which was a pleasant surprise as not much is these days! Only ‘downers’ we had was the cafe was seemingly expensive but as the entry was free we assume this was to assist with upkeep. The coffees were good so this seemed a fair deal. Our 1 year old enjoyed the visit and we will visit again when she’s a little older when we’ll get something completely different from visiting.

Interesting Look at the History of Railways in the UK
I had been back in the early 90s but I didn't find it too much different this time. I guess I was hoping for some more high-tech hands-on exhibits for the adults not just the kids, e.g. access to some train-related computer games and websites. The bookstore & However, tshop was a veritable treasure trove of really interesting books, games and other items. Access to the museum was easy with ample cheap parking across the road

Perfect if you love railways, interesting even if you don't.
We visited on a very busy day in October half term where there were lots of families and tourists enjoying the displays. I confess to not being a railway enthusiast but I imagine if you are then this place is the holy grail. Entry is free and you get an awful lot for that with many locos on display in the main hall as well as huge amounts to see in the open storage areas. There is also an extensive shop which stocked everything you could possibly think of to do with the railways.

All aboard a visit to the railway museum
When in York a visit to the railway museum is a must. Free entry but a donation to help them maintain these lovely engines is the least you can do. Engines from the mallard to The flying Scotsman and a replica of the rocket are stunning. Even the first Japanese bullet train where you can sit in and experience what it was like to travel at cast speed. There is a VR experience of the flying Scotsman at an extra cost. We spent 4 hours there and still didn’t take it all in. Places to eat are in the grand hall and there is a little shop. If you’re a train enthusiast you really have to visit this museum

    For all train enthusiasts.
I visited with my son and really enjoyed all the trains and information on the boards, as well as the huge collection within the North Shed. It was great to get up close to trains, such as the Mallard and Duchess of Hamilton. This is ideal for train enthusiasts and families. The cafe is pricey, but there are plenty of places in York if you choose not to eat there.

    Was Well Worth A Visit
I always wanted to go, and I am glad we made the time to attend. I couldn't get over the size of some of the trains on display. I booked the free tickets online and selected our arrival time; as mentioned, entry is free, but they ask for a small donation, which I was more than happy to make when you see what's on offer. Its around 15 minutes walk from York City Centre.

    How it’s changed since 1980!
As a child I use to go weekly on weekends and collect the postcards that use to be available in the machines. I still have them all! I moved away from the area and this was my first visit since 1980 and how the place has changed. The horse has been pushed to the back of the storeroom which was at the front of the museum on entrance and now thousands of pieces of memorabilia from all over the country. Definitely worth a visit and it did bring back lots of childhood memories of walking from Leeman road on weekends!

    Brilliant
Thsi was a return visit for me after 60 years. Safe to say that it has changed a bit! But in many ways it is still the same. Wonderful locos and other items displayed in an easily accessible way. These days, you cannot clamber all over the trains (you could when I was just a nipper), but you do get up close to the engines and they always impress. It's obviously the best railway museum in the UK, and perhaps the world!
