- lindabG8394DZPickering, United Kingdom6 contributionsBeautiful place, badly let down by Fitzroy restaurantWe live locally so had been a few times before. This time was for a family birthday so there was 8 of us including a teenager and a toddler. All was good until we visited the Fitzroy restaurant. Service was apathetic to say the least. Repairs to the ceiling were taking place with just an area cordoned off so workman were consulting and making a mess at the same time as we were trying to eat our meal. The meal choices were very limited and had obviously been stood for some time as the potatoes were cold and hard and salad dry and unappetising, pastry was impossible to cut through on the quiche. Two members of our party suffered with tummy problems after the meal. Very poor value for money. Grounds people were working extremely hard and their work was paying dividends. All staff apart from Fitzroy restaurant were welcoming and helpful. Will definitely go again but will take our own food next time!Hello, Thank you for your comments. Yesterday morning we experience an unexpected major leak in the Fitzroy Cafe which disrupted our regular service. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused, and hope to welcome you back again soon. - bettoneyvere92 contributionsHouse interesting, walled garden stunning, staff brilliantIt's an expensive visit and, while the bits of the house that you do get to see are pretty good, you do only get to see a small number of rooms. Why the 5 star review then? The gardens and grounds are gorgeous - I enjoyed the walled garden in particular. But this is as much a review about the staff who came to my rescue when I had a flat tyre that, for various reasons, I couldn't manage by myself. Special shout-out to Ray from the security team who was an absolute good samaritan.Hello, thank you for your review. - Cath Y1 contributionA wonderful unmissable experienceI visited today with my mum who's nearly at the grand old age of 90! What a fantastic place to visit, we bought tickets for the house and grounds, but didn't get to see much of the grounds due to rain and our limited mobility. The house was absolutely amazing, so much to see. The staff and volunteers couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, this really added to our wonderful experience. It really is a must see,I would highly recommend it to anyone. The driver of the little train gave our day a wonderful end by letting us stay on board as it went up and down and pointed out things to see in the grounds. The only complaint I have (and I hesitate to complain as it was all so perfect) is the lack of seating for visitors in the house. As I have mentioned, Mum and myself have limited mobility, we can manage to walk for a certain length of time but then it becomes a struggle as we need frequent rest stops. I have a wheelchair myself but Mum isn't really able to push me as she is limited too. I understand that seating may not be in keeping with the historical antiques and furnishings in this beautiful house but surely some compromise could be made? We finished our afternoon with a visit to the farm shop, wow ..we could have spent serious time and money in there!! Very happy with the purchases we did make. Cannot wait to return, hopefully over the Christmas season, really looking forward to revisiting. Thanks to all who made this such a great experience for us.Hello, thank you for your review. The trees outside just in the last flaming colours of autumn, looking beautiful. A nice cup of coffee at the boathouse. Will be back to see the house again.Hello, thank you for your review. - Linmar1Leeds, United Kingdom238 contributionsExcellent!Christmas Neverland at Castle Howard. Never been to the Christmas before but would definitely visit again and recommend. Well run, amazing attention to detail with decoration, lighting, projections, sounds and music alike. Courtyard café - quite a wait for a table as you can’t book. Only spoiled by one person sitting at a table for 6! How entitled the staff seemed to be unable to move him to the other two tables his party were at with spaces! The food was fabulous and the staff otherwise great. The deli and shop were great as always. The bauble shop was out of this world. Be proud Castle Howard!Hello, thank you for your review. - MandyLondon, United Kingdom17 contributionsBeautifully FestiveWe visited for Christmas at Castle Howard, we loved the beautiful displays and effects, it was such a lovely day. It was our first time visiting at Christmas but it certainly won’t be our last. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, even went out of their way to help us in the cafe. The only slight improvement I can think of is please have mince pies available in the cafe and in the farm shop, I think you missed a trick there 😀Hello, we're so delighted you enjoyed your experience at Castle Howard and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. - RITA H39 contributionsOur annual Christmas visit.Visited the Neverland Christmas event on Tuesday 21st November. We got straight into the house, and were very much enjoying the beautifully arranged displays, when it became evident something was wrong, and some of the lights weren't working. We did however, get to experience the long gallery, which was made to look like Captain Hook's ship, and that was amazing, with sound effects and 'windows' through which you could see the 'sea'. Our 9 month old granddaughter was swaying in her baby sling, and obviously loved looking all around! The projection onto the dome was not on in here though, and after visiting the chapel, and heading through to the marquee for lunch, we discovered the gift shop in semi-darkness, and were escorted through to the café, where members of staff were explaining about the power outage, and the options that were open to us. Another lady then told everyone that Mrs Howard had authorised free cake! We weren't rushed out, and took the time to give the baby her lunch, and had a sandwich ourselves. Obviously we were disappointed to miss a hot lunch/drink which we usually have here on our Christmas visit, and that everything was not working as it should, and appreciate what a blow it must have been to those visitors who had driven even further than us,to be unable to get in at all. However, what we did see was lovely,(no thing tacky or tinselly in our opinion) and we feel our visit was still worth 5 stars, because of the way all the members of staff dealt with both the situation and the visitors....they were calm, professional and so friendly. Also many thanks for our ticket refund, which we received within a few days. We shall definitely return next year.Hello, thank you for your lovely comments - as you know, we had a major power outage and we really appreciated the kindness, calmness and understanding of our visitors. We're delighted you had a positive experience and look forward to welcoming you again next year.
