- Jennifer CCumbria, United Kingdom1,839 contributionsWe wanted to visit the Minster but didn't want to be with the crowds so was delighted to find an out of hours morning tour was available for the dates we were in York. Paid £45 each for a tour which started at 08.30 followed by breakfast. Only 10 of us on the tour heard lots of very useful and informative information. Only thing spoiling the peace was the carpenter but we thoroughly understand that work needs to be done. Tour was an hour then we had breakfast in the refectory before we went back into the Minster for a walk around on our own. Interestingly the lady we spoke to when we went back in had no idea about the out of hours tour when we mentioned it to her!!! Our ticket lasts for 1 year which is great. It was very crowded when we went back in so definitely worth going in early.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 August 2024
- ElaineAndGregChesterland, Ohio3,188 contributionsRecognizing this is a review site, it is still difficult to review an attraction like York Minster, which is one of the world's greatest historical and religious sites. Having said that, this is a wonderful attraction full of beauty and dedicated to faith. The Cathedral is enormous, as others have noted and is grand simply to take in. But don't let the size prevent you from seeing many of the wonderful contents inside. Oddly enough, let me start in the basement or undercroft. This not only has historic material but is an engineering marvel based on the rebuilding of the foundation in the 20th century to save the central tower from collapse. Please also note the Roman ruins found under the cathedral, telling us that this has been an important site for 2,000 years now. It is possibly the site where Constantine learned that he would be the Roman Emperor. Inside the Cathedral itself, take a look at: -The cool stained glass window. Many are modern but allegedly this Cathedral has some huge proportion of the existing Medieval stained glass in Europe. -Look at the stone carvings. Many are religious, but others are not and there is more than a little whimsy. After you have been to the cathedral, walk around behind it where the stone carvers work out in the open and you can see great gargoyles close up. -There are round designs at several of the ceiling junctions with themes ranging from the martrydom of Thomas Becket to more modern depictions. One of our favorites was of a diver playing with a whale. Another is the NASA moon landing. They have mirrors on carts that make it easier to find them without craning your neck too much. -In the center of the cathedral look at the row of king statues -Behind it is the beautiful choir. Look at the nice wood carvings, particularly on the choir seats. Some on this site complain of the cost of £18 or their belief that admission to a house of worship should be free. I have two answers to that. First is the obvious that this is a large and expensive structure to maintain and operate, particularly with a high volume of tourists. The fee is in line with such a magnificent and historic structure and likely does not cover that entire cost. Second (and here is a tip), the cathedral is free to enter for worship. I did not test the system, but if you are here to light a prayer candle or pray I am told there is no charge. The tip is that the Evensong is both free and wonderful. At present it is at 5:30 daily in the choir. Come into the south side of the cathedral and tell them you are there for Evensong. There is no charge and they point you to where you need to go and provide the necessary books. The setting is stunning, the music wonderful, the text moving, and the organ spectacular. The service is less than 45 minutes and was the highlight of our 2-week trip to the UK.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 September 2024
- simon b21 contributionsWe happened to be in York 13-15 November which is when the uni was using the minster for their graduation ceremonies. Whilst the streets were full of students in gowns which was absolutely lovely to see, it meant the minster was closed for visitors which was so disappointing. However we decided to go to evening song to get an opportunity to go inside. You need to arrive by 5.15 to queue to get in as there are limited seats. You are seated behind the choir which consists of around 25/30 young people to adults. They sounded absolutely amazing. You will need to set aside a hour for the whole experience- queue to the end of service- but would definitely recommend. Don’t worry you won’t be expected to sing and it is free to attend- we have a donation through.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2024
- Mark LOmbersley, United Kingdom366 contributionsWe turned up at February half term as the Minster opened at 930 am and paid the £20 entrance fee. At first we thought it was a bit steep however once inside it was worth every penny. The Minister is simply stunning and steeped in years of history. My favourite was the Chapter House which we got to with no other visitors present. The ceiling, stained glass and flooring are remarkable. There was a nice prayer for the day at 10am and regular free guided tours every. 30 minutes. At night we also went to the spectacular free light show projected on to the Minster lasting for 10 minutes on a loop.Visited February 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 February 2025
- Lisa RMount Pleasant, South Carolina74 contributionsAbsolutely breathtaking! Such an amazing Gothic cathedral, beautifully maintained and loving restored after multiple fires. Best to go for services or Evensong- you can hear the choir (amazing acoustics), hear a brief organ recital after the service and see the interior. Sunday communion service was amazing- everyone was so welcoming and they even followed with some tea and coffee.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 July 2024
- ChanReading, United Kingdom287 contributionsWe booked tickets for the Phoenix night time show, we didn't get in until nearly 7:30pm due to huge confusion over who is queuing for what time. There were no signs, the staff weren't helpful and although tickets were checked, I feel as though any one who hadn't booked or paid could have walked in. Very poorly managed. The show itself was beautiful and very interesting.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2024
- LissBurrowsDeal, United Kingdom127 contributionsThe Minster is beautiful inside and out and there’s a lot to see! As well as the main areas of the Minster you also have the crypt, under Croft museum and the roof climb. The roof climb is 275 steps through a narrow, steep tower so make sure you’re fit enough to get there because you can’t turn around! The views at the top make it worthwhile!Visited March 2025Travelled with friendsWritten 19 March 2025
- musicmanbrain44 contributionsA great visit - and we accidentally arrived just as a tour (included with entry) was just starting. We had a great guide (John - I think). He really explained the architecture of the building and also took time to explain about the daily life of the church. The tours are included with entry - so I strongly recommend taking a tour - it helped us engage with the space much more.Visited February 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 February 2025
- JohnnyNottinghamshire, United Kingdom304 contributionsA beautiful and peaceful minster and a must see on a visit to York. I found my visit very enriching and all the staff we met were extremely friendly and helpful especially the gentleman on the ticket scanning who informed us of what was new since our last visit. There is a great deal to see and as we visited during December we also got to see the Christmas tree festival. The undercroft museum was a surprise to me and i enjoyed the well set out displays and the artefacts on show. The ticket admission price not only helps with the upkeep of this remarkable building but allows revisits throughout the year and i feel is well worth the money.Visited December 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 December 2024
- Woodpecker99867 contributionsWe had booked tickets to the York Minster Phoenix Light Show October 2024. It was a little chaotic as people gathered to enter the event at 6pm and there was no kind of system in place to stop people crowding. Staf did then start to organise people just before entry. But the event itself, once inside, was great. Busy but not uncomfortably overcrowded. The pre bookable event told the story of the York Minster fire of 1984 and the sequence of events that lead to the damage and then the story of restoration, all portrayed through a light show against the stained glass and up onto the ceilings. It was a very good show with wonderful colours, stills and videos and supported with narration. Due to the acoustics, it was quite difficult to hear the narration but the light show itself was impressive. I did intend to revisit York Minster in the daytime, but it is quite expensive with no concessions for disabled persons/carers so perhaps another time for us but from what I saw of the outside before dark, and the inside, during the light show it would be a good place for a return visit.Visited October 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 October 2024
