    An immersive and informative experience
Kelham Island Museum was easy to get to by car and public transport. There is a small car park available at the end of the road, which is free for those visiting the museum. You enter the museum via the gift shop and can pick up a very simple map of the museum to help you get around it. it was quite useful. The museum is well laid out with separate small area for different types of Sheffield's industries. The information on the boards is very interesting. It is not too much so as to overload the end but gives a good insight into the lives of the workers of Sheffield over the years. There are a number of interactive displays which were interesting. IT is a shortcoming of them that there are no answers to the questions that are asked on some of them. Recipes for Success is one example where you end up with no idea whether you have answered the questions correctly or not. 'Getting about Town' had boards with information, which was interesting, and questions related to the content of each board but no answers and some answers were not even included in the information. Naming the rivers of Shuffled was impossible as the only one mentioned on the boards was the River Don. There were also a number of broken displays - 'Making a Pen Knife' was one of these. It was a good idea/task but spoilt by the fact that the elements had been broken and not replaced with new ones. Despite all of the niggles it was a very interesting place to visit. You could really soak up the atmosphere of Sheffield at various times in history through the displays, the rooms, sights, sounds and smells. An immersive experience. Both I and my sister found out a lot about Sheffield while we were there and were enjoyed our visit immensely. Although the Museum is free to visit it really is important that donations are given to enable the displays to be upgraded and looked after. There is a donation box in the gift shop and you can also 'gift aid' your donation. I would happily return to this Museum.

    Gem
The museum is the gem in Kelham island. The best free to enter museum I've come across. Lots of displays over three floors. It covers the history of iron and Steel making in general, applications of steel and the history of Sheffield itself. They even had a section on slide rulers and early calculators such as the 1970s models from Sinclair, HP and Texas, they had a TI57 calculator, a real collectors item, forty years since I've seen one. The place has free toilets. I was here on Friday lunchtime, very few visitors, almost equal numbers of staff. The downside was the Kelham island area. It is Sheffield's attempt at redevelopment of an industrial area near a river, the development is small, and too far away from the city centre itself. The place was almost deserted. Other cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester have done this on a much larger scale and done it better. They have thriving communities, this place is almost a ghost town.

A great must see day out in South Yorkshire.
Absolutely superb museum right in the centre of Sheffield. Lots of exhibits, some inter-active, with a nice lift so disabled friendly. Free admission and parking, although they would appreciate a small donation, but that is optional. The staff were friendly and helpful, I would allow at least 2-3 hours to see all the museum has to offer. There is a lovely cafe on site called Joni's, again the staff were first class.

    Wonderful place to visit.
Very helpful staff excellent videos showing little mesters at work. Huge engines and Sheffield made goods to see. Simplex cars were made locally and the museum has two ! The weather doesn't matter, there are excellent public houses nearby for refreshments.

    Great industrial heritage
Sheffield Kelham island is a must see if you want to learn more about the history of Sheffield. The museum is free, it has a souvenir shop and a lovely pub or cafe next to it for refreshments. The big engines, steel tools and objects explain really well the metal and steel industry in the area.

    Incredible museum. Free
This is an interesting museum. You can spend hours here. Watch the biggest steam engine working. There is a Great cafe and pub on site. It’s a short walk from the tram stop. You can take the tram from the railway station if it’s where you’re starting from.

    Difficult to find.
Spent a really nice couple of hours looking around the exhibition. This is a good insight into the industrial past of Sheffield, especially for first time visitors. I can't fault the museum, however, if you are a stranger to the area it is very difficult to find. The only signage we could find was when we were almost on top of it. It's a fantastic place to visit, the local authority needs to get it's act together and get it sign posted, preferably brown places of interest sign's for tourists.

    Don Engine is the highlight
A very good (free) industrial museum dedicated to the powerhouse that is was Sheffield, gives a good grounding into the history of Sheffield industry and then dazzles you with exhibits and stories. The highlight of course is the mighty Don Engine which rumbles into life like a snorting dinosaur, you can see the power it generates and imagine it rolling armour plate, the reciprocating action is amazing and the pressure the components must be under is immense, great to watch. There's lots to see and look at, tales of ingenuity and invention and beautiful craftsmanship. I really enjoyed the videos of heavy foundry work showing the dangers and toughness of the job, I worked for a couple of years in a light foundry and that was hard graft, but nothing like those on the videos. Decent cafe (joni's) on site and a pub, and good clean loos. Staff were enthusiastic and knowledgeable, well worth a visit

Interesting museum that's a little bit different from anything I've seen before.
It's a really interesting place to visit. Numerous different areas of interest. Tools, machines, workshops & table wear. An animal trail for younger kids. I went to my retired parents, and they both enjoyed our visit. Nice little museum shop.

    Good
We were in the area and decided to visit this place. It is free to enter however there is a suggested donation to be made. There is some interesting things here and information about the area and the machinery used and the production of different items which is interesting. There are some tours which you can attend at certain times. On the day we visited there were a few different activity events going on in different areas of the building. There was a stand about wildlife, a stand about bacteria in water from surrounding areas which there was microscopes to see and also activity to see the bacteria on 'petri dish' at a later date which you chose the water and drew a pattern on it using the water. Overall this is a nice place to visit. The location is good. There is a cafe/restaurant here. The staff seemed friendly. There is a small gift shop area with some nice things.
