Hotels near Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle, nestled in the heart of Newcastle, is where the story of the city began and the origin behind its name. Steeped in history, this imposing Norman fortress is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home, but rather a place where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. Newcastle Castle consists of two buildings which are both open to the public to explore - the Black Gate and the Castle Keep - as well as offering some of the most spectacular views over the city and the River Tyne Newcastle has to offer.

Best city to be in the World
I have my own company for almost 25 years and I have seen the whole world, been to many different countries and places but Newcastle is the best place to be. What I really like about this city is the friendly peolpe arround here. You can sit at a bar not knowning anybody and people start talking with you and at the end of the evening you get a hug from somebody you have never ever seen or met before. It is a fact that the wau you go up North, the moe friendly the become. I really love this city and the people love live within. Best place to be after so many years travelling all over the World

    A sight well worth seeing
At last after passing the castle on the train several times, I finally managed to visit it. I would have liked to have done a tour but unfortunately none was available while we were there. Having said that, there is information enough to help you get an idea of how the castle functioned through the ages.
Hi Charles, thank you for your kind words and amazing 5-star review! We are glad you enjoyed your visit, and hope to see you again soon.

Cool visit if you’re prepared for the stairs
We had pre-booked our visit online without fully appreciating just how many stairs there would be in the main castle section. Ordinarily this would have been no problem for us, but carrying up a 16 month old the same volume of stairs makes it slightly more strenuous, particularly when they are so steep. Thankfully, we were able to leave our pushchair in the shop at the Black Gate while we went over the road to the main castle. Not before having a quick look around the top floor of the Black Gate which had its own mini exhibition. Overall we enjoyed our visit (the views at the top of the castle were worth the climb), and if we were in the area again we may use the ticket again since it was annual, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come more than once. In the end we probably spent around 1.5 hours there between the two sites.
Hi, thank you for your review and feedback! We are glad you enjoyed your visit, despite the stairs, and hope to see you again soon.

    Great and instructive visit.
I'm a local, but haven't visited the Castle since my childhood. I can honestly say I found the experience as exciting as I did as a child and enjoyed the views from the castle much more. This was a great experience with much to see and much to learn from the excellent signage provided. There were a few visitors besides ourselves, but not too many that it had any effect on our enjoyment of the experience. Be warned, there are lots of steps which need to be climbed so as to enjoy Castle Keep to the full. Great experience and a perfectly reasonable price for tickets relative to today's prices. I'm tempted to revisit soon. Kids of all ages would love this.
Hi, thank you so much for your 5-star review and kind words! We are thrilled you enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you again soon.
