This route, is long but amazing. Don't go in peak season, the locals say its a nightmare. Only let down we had, there are so few trees, large areas are very baron. We played spot the Wildlife each day, apart from sheep there was very little of anything else. Don't be put off, this is a journey that is well worth experiencing.

    Amazing drive
Driving part of the NC500 and it is truly worth it. You get so many different aspects of the highlands, the way the terrain changes and never disappoints. Be aware the north western sections are mostly single lanes with passing bays (regular) so be patient and follow them rules. It can be difficult to stop and take photos so enjoy the views and keep them in your minds memories.

    Truly memorable drive
Surprised that we loved it so much as never camped before. Hired our F60 motor home from north500 motor homes near Inverness airport ( so incredibly helpful with videos and written guides/ towels/linen/ picnic gear etc) stocked up in the big nearby tescos and loved this drive. We went straight up to durnoch for first night ( lovely beach and campsite and east walk to town with restaurants) then did a very scenic drive (2 hour) cross country up to Durness and around the west from there. Our favourite campsite was Clachtoll for gorgeous coast walks and almost a St Lucia like beach in fabulous sunshine. We didn’t have any problems with drivers or tight spots. People gave way and plenty of passing places to let faster drivers past. The scenery breathtaking and varied. Stayed at Kylesku hotel ( great food) and ardmair camping. Found an amazing coffee / book shop in Gairloch - the mountain coffee company. Ullapool had another big tescos for supplies and great smokery. Our least favourite campsite was sands as more municipal and the restaurant food not a hit but the beach there was dramatic . Ended our trip in luxury at the Torridon- where the venison dinner in the brasserie was a great last supper and then just 1.5 hours back to Inverness airport. Would do this again.

    North Coast 500
Cara was our guide/driver. She was a considerate driver in particular on the narrow roads. Very knowledgeable on Scottish history and wildlife - we met the koos! We made plenty of interesting stops and went through amazing scenery. Scara Brae was the highlight for us, although we visited last year with Steve (hi Steve). Small group on the bus (14) so we got to chat with everyone. Great fun for all ages. Recommended trip.

    Easy drive
I have just returned from doing the NC500 with a group of friends who were on motorbikes, 6 in total, I was in the car with my partner. I had read many reviews before the trip some which were off putting, all I can say is ignore them, it’s not at all scary, in fact it was quite easy just take your time, set off reasonably early in the morning, say 08:30 to miss the rush, the trip across takes around 35 minutes and is around 11 miles. It’s an enjoyable experience, ok I couldn’t keep up with bikes over the pass but all other single lane roads we were on I did. Compared to Hard Knott pass in the Lake District it was quite easy. Do it and enjoy it.

    Our Honeymoon
Once we learned about the North Coast 500, famed for its breathtaking landscapes, warm-hearted locals, and deep historical roots, we instantly knew it was the perfect destination for our honeymoon. Excited by tales of its rugged coastlines and scenic vistas, we set aside two weeks to explore the UK, dedicating the bulk of our adventure to traversing this renowned route. The NC500 offered an unforgettable journey through the heart of Scotland's heritage, serving up views that were nothing short of spectacular. Each twist and turn brought us to charming villages where the pace of life slowed, and every local seemed to have a smile or story to share. The hospitality encountered in these quaint towns was heartwarming, and it was these interactions that enriched our travel experience, making us feel connected to the cultural tapestry of the region. Dining along the NC500 was another highlight, with local eateries providing not only a taste of traditional Scottish cuisine but also innovative dishes that showcased the best of local produce. Each meal was a delightful discovery, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our days spent exploring. Having traveled extensively around the globe, my wife and I have experienced many beautiful places, but the North Coast 500 stands out as a gem among them. It was, without doubt, a once-in-a-lifetime trip that etched its beauty and warmth into our memories, solidifying its place as our favorite destination.

Different landscape than what you see in Iceland and even Ireland
Truly, the vistas don't even look real. With a bit of luck, you'll have good weather. It sounds cliche, but around every bend there was some new and amazing landscape. We did the drive in a Land Rover...the size and power were just right. I will add that the landscape was significantly different than what you see in Iceland and even Ireland.

Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain. Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life.
