Hotels near Stanley Mills

Stanley Mills is one the best-preserved relics of the 18th-century Industrial Revolution. Textiles were produced here for 200 years. The mills were built in 1786 at a hairpin bend in the River Tay, where tremendous water-power was available. Machinery was powered initially by water wheels, and latterly by electricity generated by water-powered turbines. As the market changed and new technologies developed, buildings were added, adapted, expanded, shut down, reopened and demolished. The visitor centre tells the stories of those who worked there and the products they made. The superb interactive displays let you discover if your fingers are as nimble as a child labourer’s or compete to see if you are tough enough in business to make the mills profitable.

Worth popping in esp. if you are interested in industrial history
The museum covers 4 floors of one mill, the others building having been sold for apartments to fund the renovation. Unlike New Lanark which focusses on the social side of the mill workers and their living arrangements, Stanley Mills has more emphasis on the how and whys of Arkright's mill design and machinery and the industrial archaeology of the various water wheels used while the mill was working. Amongst the exhibits are interactive machines where you can see the effect of engaging gears and pullies. There's also a fantastic machine which pumps gallons of water around so you can lift and lower sluices to makes different designs of water wheels and turbines spin and simulate the Tay flooding. All floors are accessible via a lift. It's a shame you can't access the roof terrace as I'm sure there must be great view over the Tay. There's also a small tearoom and gift shop. While respecting the private grounds, you can walk about the estate getting access to platform overlooking the Tay and also the hydro-electric plant.

    Fascinating site
It's great to see a sensitively restored industrial building used for a variety of purposes. Part of the mill complex are apartments and businesses, but the one mill you can visit has a range of displays and interactive exhibitions telling the story of the mill. There's a lift, as well as stairs, so is disabled accessible, also plenty of seats. It's in a lovely location. There's plenty of parking a short walk from the ticket office. Can easily be combined with Huntingtower Castle and both are Historic Scotland

    Interesting and thought provoking place.
On a very wet day we arrived at Stanley Mills to be greeted by two lovely ladies on reception . We spent probably an hour and a half navigating our way to all floor of this very interesting building. When funds allow a bigger cafe and shop would be an asset.

A tale of two families - Huntingtower Castle was a lordly residence for 300 years, from the 15th to the 18th century. It is associated with two noble families: the Ruthvens (later earls of Gowrie) and, following their downfall in 1600, the Murrays (earls of Tullibardine and later dukes of Atholl). Prior to 1600, Huntingtower was known as the Place of Ruthven.Huntingtower has hosted some famous visitors, and been associated with some dramatic events. This site is currently closed as a precautionary measure while we undertake site inspections. We apologise for any inconvenience. Elcho Castle is a handsome and complete 16th century fortified mansion with three projecting towers on the banks of the River Tay. This is a castle to explore. Parade up the grand staircase or scurry up the service stair, venture into the well-appointed kitchen and admire the views over the countryside from the high battlements. The remarkably complete house of the 1500s was the country retreat of the wealthy Wemyss family. Its orchard has been replanted with traditional varieties of apple, pear and plum and has become a haven for butterflies and wildlife. The castle still has in place original wrought iron grilles to protect the windows. The interior is complete and roofed, with remains of decorated plasterwork.
