Hotels near Teatro di San Carlo

The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.

    Spectacular
Simply wonderful... to think that the King of Naples entered this theater... unique experience. The theater features ancient and wonderful frescoes, lights, armchairs and furniture still as it was at the time... STUNNING!!

    Stunning
You can do a half hour guided tour / talk at different time slots per day. Some in Italian and some that includes English. Can't book online but can phone , email or book at office in advance. It is stunning. Even better if there is an event on book instead.

    Thrilling!
A truly spectacular show! We were high up and, therefore, we could enjoy a wide view of the theater and perfect acoustics. I was impressed by so much beauty, by the harmony of the colors and the care of the lights. The bar is also well stocked.

Guided tour of the San Carlo Theater: recommended experience
Among the sites to visit if you go to Naples there is certainly the Real Teatro San Carlo. It can only be visited at certain times and with a guide. It is possible to send an email but they replied that they were not able to guarantee us the visit on the chosen day. So we showed up directly at the theater where we managed to book the visit a couple of hours after booking. There were many people present for the visit on our shift but the visit was still excellently organised. The talented, knowledgeable and enthusiastic young guide explained the history and curiosities of the theater in Italian and English. Recommended experience

When you come to Naples, a stop at San Carlo is a must. Entering the theater is something magical. The interiors are spectacular and well kept. The guides are very kind and helpful, letting you know about the history of the theater

The theater is beautiful, but the tour was very disappointing!
The theater is beautiful! If you look at the big picture. Because it is a bit of a faded glory; the paint and plasterwork is poor in many places and the chairs in the boxes are rickety and sometimes broken. We did a tour with a guide and went to a performance in the evening. We were very disappointed with the tour with the guide. We went to the main hall where the guide briefly explained the history in Italian and English. Then go to the foyer and to two busts in the hall. If you add up the time she spoke English, it took less than 10 minutes. We were very disappointed! The performance was beautiful and you also have time to take photos. This costs more, but you also have the experience of a beautiful performance in this theater. Ticket for the route was 9 euros pp, ticket for the performance at the box office was 20 euros pp (loge 5th floor).

    A little gem
Beautiful theater described and presented by a boy who acted as a guide and also told us some nice curiosities. A true gem, the royal box is shown in all its splendor and richness. Honestly, I imagined it bigger, but it is a visit that absolutely must be done if you are in Naples.

    The oldest theater in Europe
The guided tour, thanks to a very knowledgeable young lady, was very interesting. It is the oldest theater in the world, dating back to 1737, and after a fire it was returned to the city in its maximum splendor. Today it is a UNESCO heritage site.

Teatro San Carlo : unparalleled charm
Every time I enter the San Carlo I get excited. Listening to the opera in this theater is like going back in time. The frescoes and the refinement of the decorations show an unparalleled magnificence. The acoustics are perfect. In short, a real charm. For those who loves opera, music and dance is the place in Naples where you absolutely must go.

Check out a different side of Naples—think: an extensive labyrinth of tunnels that snake underneath the entire old town. Underground Naples offers a fascinating combination of caves, galleries, and passages 131 feet below the ground. Follow the official Napoli Sottrerranea route, which will bring you to the Roman Theater and the Greek-Roman aqueduct, or join a separate tour to visit the Galleria Borbonica which used to be a tunnel intended for the then King of Naples to flee if intended. It's highly recommended to pre-book skip-the-line tickets online to avoid long lines at the entrance. – Tripadvisor

Enchanting scenery that unfolds to the eyes of visitors, a secret place full of history and magic atmosphere. An emotional journey that conducts visitors in the new section of the underground of Naples. It is situated in Vico del Grottone 4, from to 150 mt. to Plebiscito Square. Until a few years ago it wasa veterinary laboratory, now is the entrance of the Bourbon Tunnel. A staircase with 8 ramps, 33 yards deep descending into the belly of Chiaia. The second entry is in Via Domenico Morelli,40, through the crosswalk of “Quick parking”.The Tunnel was built in 1853 by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, who, concerned about the outbreak of rebellion, he asked for an escape from the Royal Palace to the barrack in Via della Pace, now Via Morelli. The work was uncompleted and, during the second World War, was used by residents of the area as a military hospital, later becoming the Hall Judicial Deposit. The war left its mark even in the subsoil. That’s way there are handwrite, folding beds, messages of wish and desolation of those who lived it and still maintains its memory. Along the tunnel thereare also the evidences, 530 meters, where visitors can discover the history of real life. Through the spacious streets, it’s easy reachable the network of tunnels and cisterns of seventeenth-century,large buildings, where worked the "pozzari", the only connoisseur of Naples underground. The show is stunning, but that's not finished. On Via Morelli appear statues dating back to fascist period and many cars and motorcycles, abandoned for years, freed from piles of rubbish, arranged and illuminated ad hoc for the route.Nothing is left to chance, even lighting, perfectly integrated with the path of the visitors.Since today everything is possible to visit. Five years ago the scenery was completely different.Rubbish, degradation, wastes of all kinds covered the reliquaries.
