Hotels near Belvedere Museum

The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

    Belvedere Palaces Vienna
Beautiful area near the palace. But it’s better to watch in the summer, when the trees are green and the fountains are active. The upper palace has beautiful halls with paintings on display. I saw the famous painting by the famous Viennese artist “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt. The paintings in the Lower Palace were not impressive. Photography is allowed.

    Prince Eugene's delight
There are actually three museums here, one of which, Belvedere 21 Museum of Contemporary Art, is in a different architectural and historic context. The Upper Belvedere is the most impressive of the three as it is a magnificent palace with a first class art gallery within its walls. Most people will probably find that the late 19th and early 20th century art is the most fascinating. That is reinforced by the throng of people taking their own pictures in front of Klimt and Co. The history and events which have happend in the palace are well explained. The ground floor cafe is entirely acceptable. By contrast the Lower Belvedere is visually a less impressive place set at the bottom of the hill and rather dark inside, possibly to protect the pictures. Currently an exhibition of Ukrainian art is on show (partially, no doubt, to avoid the hazards of its home in Kjiv). Much else besides - and fewer visitors.

Interesting but done in a couple of hours
Nicely laid out museum across multiple floors. Well signposted and has lifts for accessiblity. Good amount of paintings and sculptures, with photography allowed (no flash). Some weird exhibits, mix of modern art and medieval paintings/sculptures in 2 separate buildings.

A must for art lovers and beyond
We went on a rainy March day and could only see the palace, the gardens we saw from afar and they were in the process of being rebuilt after the winter. The palace was impressive, but not the best in Vienna. In general, for those who love works of art, it is a nice experience.

Saw some grand paintings, sculpture and beautiful artifacts
Belvedere Palace complex was another beautiful museum that we enjoyed visiting. Smaller to Schonbrunn but elegant in every sphere of architecture, the building housed so much of paintings of historical value that were well conserved. Museum housed a large collection of sculpture and some rooms were decorated with soothing wall and ceiling paintings that could take the viewer to a fantasy world. The baroque garden occupying a vast area, was in large terraces, reaching the lower level at the beautiful water feature followed by the tiered water cascade. Garden sculptures of sphinx was magnificent.

    Belvedere
The Belvedere museum is an eighteenth-century baroque palace which offers an interesting collection of works and artists including Klimt. The outdoor gardens are also beautiful, particularly enjoyable in good weather. I also suggest purchasing tickets in advance to avoid queues.

The residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy
The two Belvedere castles were wanted by Prince Eugene of Savoy to make them his residence. Prince Eugene, in addition to being considered the greatest leader of his time (between the end of the 1600s and the beginning of the 18th century), was also a great patron and collector of works of art, many of which are exhibited in the museum. We only visited the Upper Belvedere, while we only saw the Lower Belvedere from the outside. The Upper Belvedere, built later, is the most spectacular and its museum is also the one that houses the most famous works, primarily those by Klimt, including the Kiss. The gardens that divide the two buildings are also spectacular with a splendid monumental fountain.

Beautiful art in a beautiful building
This is a beautiful building that used to be someone's residence and now its a wonderful art museum. We enjoyed our visit there on our recent trip to Europe. The building itself is gorgeous and the art, especially the Gustav Klimt collection is amazing. Highly recommend a visit.

    Amazing place
The whole place is incredible: the museum itself, the gardens, the lake. It's very worth it. The museum has Klimt's most famous paintings but also has several other works worth visiting. Going to the souvenir shops is a great time.
