Hotels near Rockingham Castle
Set on a hill overlooking five counties, Rockingham Castle was built by William the Conqueror. The Castle was a royal residence for 450 years. In the 16th Century Henry VIII granted it to Edward Watson and for 450 years it has remained a family home. The pre-dominantly Tudor building, within Norman walls, has architecture, furniture and works of art from practically every century including, unusually, a remarkable collection of 20th century pictures. Twelve acres of formal and wild garden command splendid views over the surrounding countryside. The Castle is open to day visitors on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from Easter through to September and from June on Tuesdays as well. Groups are welcome on open days or by pre-arrangement for a private guided tour on weekdays. The beautifully appointed Castle Gift Shop is situated in the courtyard along with our licensed Walkers House Tearooms which serve lunches, cream teas and wonderful homemade cakes.

- Jay_piiOakham, United Kingdom53 contributionsEnchanting Castle with amazing staffWe took the Grandchildren for the Halloween event and what a fantastic time we all had, from rolling the Pumpkin down the hill on arrival to following the clues to the spooky crossword and winding our way around the Halloween trail. The children spent time drawing pictures for the competition and the activity book was a huge success. The Castle was decorated in spooktacular style and the staff were just amazing. The icing on the cake for the children was the goodie bag at the end and for us oldies it was the children’s smiling faces . The staff even went out of their way to search for and find our missing sweater which we really appreciate. Thank you Rockingham CastleVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 October 2023
- Elizabeth R38 contributionsMagical tour.We visited today and had the most magical tour of the Christmas decorated castle. Our costumed guide was the governess who was absolutely fantastic, really funny and extremely knowledgeable. The castle looked stunning and we had a delicious cake and mulled wine too! Highly recommended!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023
- AlexTheJockWigston, United Kingdom3,131 contributionsThe Victorian Christmas Tour was superb - highly recommendedMy wife and I, both of us in our mid-sixties, visited the castle for the Victorian Christmas guided tour. It cost us £15 each and it was such good value for money. On arrival we were directed to the marquee to book in, and as we had around fifteen minutes before our tour began we had tea and a sausage roll, which was rather a nice way to wait for our slot. The marquee was lovely and warm and looked great with the hanging chandeliers. We were taken over to the castle bang on our start time and handed over to the butler. The tour was to take us back to Christmas in 1849 and the person that was playing the butler did a really good job of doing just that. We got a lot of information on what Christmas would have been like during that period. The rooms were all done up superbly to reflect how it would have been, and a great deal of attention had been given to make it authentic, but please don’t use modern day staples to construct the Christmas decorations, as it took away from the realism of the setting. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour around the castle, but it was such a great pity that we couldn’t take photos inside, but as it is still a private residence it is understandable. We finished the day of with something to eat in the Walker's House Tearoom, which was a lovely way to end our outing before returning home. The food was good and reasonably priced, and the staff were welcoming and helpful.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2023
- Mobile48567616090United Kingdom4 contributionsTRULY AMAZING! Watson family is so humble.Rockingham Castle was one of our best days as a family day out. The staff at the castle are so kind and helpful. The owners of the Castle are so humble and sweet. When we was there we got hungry, we approached the food cabin inside the castle. We all has Sausage rolls, cold drinks and coffee. Then we went into the castle with our tickets. We had an amazing time inside seeing all the things inside the castle. One of the staff was happy to spend their time telling us the history of the castle. We learnt about the amazing Watson family who owns the Castle. We heard about a lady called Elizabeth who is the wife of James toegether they own the castle. My son said I wish I could meet her to the staff who was telling us the story, the staff told us you can, they told us that she is inside the food cabin serving customers food. We was so shocked, the lady who had so kindly served us our food was the owner of the castle. We ran outside to say hi and to apologise because we didn't know she was the owner. It just shows how humble the Watson family is. They own this amazing place and still do the jobs to keep visitors happy. Truly an amazing place. We're booking our Christmas at the castle this year. Hopefully we get to meet James and the whole family. Elizabeth is truly so humble. My wife said she reminds us of Princess Diana. Which is true. Crazy visit. Loved it.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024
- Gary L2 contributionsA great historical experience.I first visited Rockingham as a child in the 70's, it was great then and has remained so. We visited with friends on the weekend and were lucky enough to take the exterior tour with the very knowledgeable guide Leslie who explained the history of the castle. It was nice to see the property is still in use as a home by the Watson family. All of the staff were friendly and everything so well cared for, well worth the admission of £17.50.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 April 2024
- angelawA6201UJ460 contributionsAwesome open air performanceWe went to Rockingham Castle to see Hamlet in the open air. Every member of the castle staff were helpful, friendly and polite - the car parking staff, the staff in the catering “truck”, the lady who showed us where to queue and the staff who directed us to available toilets during the interval. It was a stunning setting for open air theatre and we will definitely be returning next year.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 June 2024
- Rhiannon MLondon, United Kingdom43 contributionsWhat a spectacular venue for our weddingWe fell in love with Rockingham Castle, the moment we walked through the beautiful tower gates. We loved that we could take our guests on a journey with us around the gorgeous castle and grounds – from our ceremony and breakfast in the Great Hall and drinks reception in the gardens to dancing the night away in Walker’s House. The castle estate team were brilliant in helping us with our wedding planning and ensuring that the day went smoothly from start to finish. In particular, we would like to thank Katie Callaghan who was absolutely fantastic in helping us deliver our wedding exactly as we wanted to and whose presence in the planning was a constant reassurance to us. What stunning photos we have of our day and what cherished memories we have too!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 August 2024
- Anna72 contributionsDog friendlyIt is free for Historic House members (you need to pre-book) but I would have paid to visit. The garden and house were lovely. Everyone I met was lovely and the scones were delicious. A review said there was no outside seating by the cafe but there are now some tables. The dogs were allowed in the grounds. Definitely somewhere that I would visit again.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 August 2024
