The stag pub in Ongar essex

My wife and I recently went to the Stag pub in Ongar, to ordered some food. I have a gluten allergy and explained this the very helpful waitress and she (as I hoped she would) asked the chef in charge, about the options of meals that we're gluten free. The chef him self came to our table and recommended a list of dishes and even was prepared to make a dish that wasn't on the menu to ensure that myself and my company was 100 % happy and reassured that we, (including the chef) were more than satisfied of the option. The ribs and mash potatoes were better than what I had expected and the service was faultless. I would highly recommend dining at this venue.

Amazing!

Cannot thank the team enough, felt very safe covid friendly. Team were very knowledgeable about the food, and the food was absolutely amazing! I had the lamb and it was melt in your mouth, my partner had the chicken and said it was to die for, my mum had the veggie Wellington and said was cooked to perfection. Weekends are very busy so would recommend booking, we have been during the week also as we were so impressed with the experience and food was again amazing! Always space to park, a playground to keep the kids amused, food and drink to keep the adults amused!

Restaurant quality takeaway

Coved19 stopped us eating out but then we heard the The Stag was doing takeaway food. We ordered the skate and haddock with chips. We were amazed at the standard of the timing to pick up the food, the wrapping but more than anything the food was superb. Restaurant quality and presentation. It’s food came with mushy peas, delicious, and tartare sauce - all home made. The fish was superbly cooked with a light batter and the chips were delicious.

Fish & Chip Friday

This was our first family meal out after lockdown so to say we were looking forward to it was an understatement. We phoned in advance to book our table yet when we arrived no one knew where to say us or who we were, we ordered some drinks and they arrived in plastic glasses which was very disappointing as it just doesn’t taste the same. We ordered Haddock & Chips for 2 adults and 2 meals from the children’s menu but unfortunately they all had to be sent back as the chips weren’t cooked on any of the meals which was a bit of a surprise seeing as they were only cooking Fish & Chips. The food was served in takeaway boxes with plastic cutlery which is not what you expect when going out for dinner, especially when it cost £56, had I of known it was going to be served like that I could of just gone to the chip shop and bought a can of drink from the shop and saved £35. I will say that the homemade Tartare sauce was amazing as the Fish wasn’t too bad but overall really not what I expected.

Saturday lunch in the sun

Impromptu stop as we were heading to another pub, had a great lunch with excellent food and service while sitting out in the garden. Minted lamb burger with chips I couldn’t fault and the good lady had scampi with chips and they happily swapped the mushy peas for garden peas. Happy with the music playing in the background.

Fantastic Sunday Roast - Amazing roast potatoes

Living in Sussex we had driven up in the morning to watch our grandson play rugby in Chelmsford, i had suggested that we go for a roast afterwards. Booked by my son in advance just to make sure we would get a table the roast was amazing , with 2 kids and a toddler in tow we could not have felt more welcome. Kids were offered food other than a roast, but both opted for 1/2 chicken breast with all the trimmings which went down very well. The adults had either Beef and Lamb everyone was more than happy with their plate, with a plethora of veg as well as the yorkshire and the amazing roast potatoes! Of course we just about had room for a dessert with a good choice again, cannot fault anything. This will i am sure become a family favourite and with a large play area outside everyone is kept happy

Fantastic Sunday Roast

Visiting the local area & came across this pub & stopped to see if they were serving food ( Sunday Lunchtime ) we were quickly seated & served a lovely , big portion of Lamb & Beef Sunday Roast . Very tasty & all the staff were very friendly , welcoming & chatty . Would recommend .

Pleasantly Surprised

We went to the Stag today for Sunday lunch and we haven’t been here since the new owners took over. We think they have done very well and transformed this Pub. Nothing was too much trouble all the staff was so helpful and really looked after us. We wasn’t the easiest of customers as we had difficulty choosing a table we had 2 children with us and couldn’t decide to sit in or out in the gardens. If there is one gripe the Roast Potatoes were very hard, perhaps a little over done but the rest of our dinners were superb, I had the Roast Lamb and it was lean and succulent

Amazing family pub lunch

Amazing pub, We booked for our annual family Christmas meal 20+ of us including children. The owners and staff could not do more for you, the food and service was amazing. We have an individual who is gluten free and another vegetarian who they happily catered. Even offered food not being served that day. I can’t thank you all enough for a lovely day and being able to relax and enjoy our meals.

Sunday Roast Family Visit

I was advised by friends and family to visit the stag to try their take on Sunday roast. I was really lucky to meet Luke their new in house chef, very friendly and informative. It was nice that he took the time to present himself, there was no hiding in the kitchen. The meat was cooked to perfection and the Yorkshire puddings were magical. I will definitely visit again, and I would highly recommend this warm and friendly establishment. Thanks The Stag

Best Sunday Roast!

I’m a very fussy eater and must say I find it very difficult to find a good veggie roast and I’m happy to say I found the best veggie roast ever at The Stag! Absolutely delicious!!! The staff were friendly, the pub was cozy, I felt very comfortable there and I can’t wait to go back. Definitely recommend. Hats off to the staff there!

Christmas pressie lunch

Superb food, so much roast beef and so very lean, everything on my roast was gorgeous. To finish off with a scrummy Begium waffle. Service by Amy wonderful and compliments to Chef Floyd - would very much recommend as a quaint, friendly, atmospheric, lovely family pub.

Great food atmosphere and outside space

Great food atmosphere and fantastic outside space . A group of us reserved a outside table . We ordered drinks from the outside bar they were delivered by lovely friendly bar staff .. we had a beef burger with chips and a cheeseburger . Both were really tasty ! Micks doing a great job with the pub . Well done ❤️

Fantastic roast.

Just had a roast lamb and all the trimmings and added a cauliflower cheese. Absolutely delicious.!!! I'm not one to waste food but only just managed to eat it all. Freidly staff. Dog friendly pub. Lots of outside seating. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Surprise baby shower

The Stag Pub held my sister surprise baby shower. It was a great atmosphere and the staff was great a help throughout the day and the lead up to the event. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was great and happily accommodated to dietary requirements. Thank you so much for an amazing afternoon.
