My girlfriend and I were looking for some place to eat and Google suggested to check the Old Inn out, which is supposedly the oldest pub in Cornwall. The façade has been repainted as an homage to the NHS, while inside you can find paintings from local artists to be purchased by the customers.
The menu is diverse, with a great choice of meats and main courses. Everything is cooked on order, so you might wait a little bit, but it's really worth it.
We had a pate as a starter, which was awesome. I tried their Moorland Grill and let me tell you one thing: I ate mixed grills in Italy, Austria, Germany and France but I never had something where every meat was cooked to perfection - pork and chicken are always the weakest links, but here they were so juicy and tasty -. My girlfriend tried their cheeseburger and was amazed by the taste, I think that they grind their own meat, as the flavour was almost unexpected.
We didn't order any dessert, as we were really full so I can't vouch on them. The price was pretty reasonable as well: we paid less than £50 for a starter, two mains, wine, water and a cider.
Highly recommended and kudos to the chef and staff!

We booked for Sunday lunch and with two dogs in tow we’re allocated a table in the bar area which was just great, flagstone floors, beamed ceilings, very atmospheric. We were on the 12:30 sitting and it’s just as well we booked as the place was full to capacity in both the bar areas and larger restaurant area - can certainly see why it’s so popular as the carvery was spectacular! It’s priced according to how many meats you want to enjoy (up to 4) and each was sliced thickly and very generous portions, and then help yourself to accompanying fresh veg, roast potatoes, huge homemade Yorkshire puddings and delicious thick homemade gravy. A separate menu was also available with a wide selection to choose from. Queue for carvery very well managed so no one has to stand in line too long. Really couldn’t fault it, and a handful of roast meat “scraps” were made available which kept our dogs very happy! In fact between our two carvery meals there was enough leftover to takeaway for doggies tea later. A friendly welcome, delicious meals and we look forward to coming again, trying other items on the menu.

We ate here twice during the August 'eat out to help out' scheme whilst on holiday in the village. The pub was buzzing but social distancing measures were laid out well and we felt safe. Food and drinks were easy to order via an app, and came quickly once ordered despite the pub being busy. The menu is big with lots of choice, portions are huge and good value. Don't expect gourmet or gastro pub fare but good traditional steaks, fish and chips and pies etc. Staff are friendly and service is great and efficient. The mural outside is stunning too!

This looks like a beautiful old pub in a fabulous location and all it needs is some excellent food and service to top it off. I acknowledge that many reviews are very positive, our experience was very average. The restaurant was busy with the eat out to help out scheme in full flight, however not all tables were in use and yet the kitchen still had a serious backlog and delay to work through and never caught up when we were there, our meal took just under 3 hours to complete.
The food ordering system is a bit fiddly but actually sensible and workable given the need to social distance, and given that all tables appeared to be up for usage, something that is quite necessary.
The food was disappointing, the crab cakes and falafel both lacked seasoning and spice and could have been improved by adding more of both. The main courses had huge portions but very mixed quality, the pork casserole was not hot and we saw several sent back, the steak was under cooked and a very sinew laden cut. The chips however are excellent and should be made more of.
All in all, for us this was overcrowded with large portions of mediocre food.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review.
With the introduction of 'Eat out to help out' we have found ourselves very busy on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. It may help me to acknowledge some of your concerns if I were able to obtain the date of your booking and a name.
I am very grateful for your comments regarding the pub itself and on the social distancing measures we have put in to place along with the online ordering system. We have some tables close together. We have placed screens between those and in some instances have also not booked a table or two purposefully in order to provide adequate social distancing with the neighbouring table. This may account for the empty tables you describe.
We have served well over 170 - 180 meals in three hour sittings on each of the Eat Out to Help Out evenings, and I am very proud of how our staff have managed to work safely with this amount of customers given the current guidelines around coronavirus.
I am however, having some difficultly pinpointing a date when food service was anywhere near as long as you say. On a couple of occasions during peak times, we have had an hour wait on food. I have been present on every food service evening except one, so if you could possibly highlight the date for me, this would be very helpful.
I am so sorry that you had an average experience at The Old Inn also in terms of food. The experience you describe was certainly not the service we pride ourselves on. Again, any information you could provide regarding the evening you visited would be helpful.
May I ask in addition, whether you raised any of these complaints to a member of our team? We do ask our waiters and waitresses to come back to all tables and check that their meal is adequate. I hope that this did happen for you and we had an opportunity to put right any problems that you had. Again, more information would be very welcome.
Far from questioning your review, I only respond with a desire to know more about your experience, and hope that should we be able to greet you again at The Old Inn and Restaurant, we will have an opportunity to put right some of the negative experiences you had.
Thank you again for providing us with a review. We do value all feedback and once again apologise that your experience was not of the standard we would have liked.
If you would like to contact me personally, I would welcome an email from you on info@theoldinnandrestaurant.co.uk.

Dinner 22/09/20. Kitchen ignored all cooking requests for the liver and bacon. Liver was full of gristle, over cooked and covered in gravy that was so salty that destroyed the taste. The restaurant offered to replace the meal but by then our tastebuds were capable of facing another meal. Covid 19 2M spacing between tables was poor and in some places non existent. Almost no one was wearing masks when standing. We would have asked for refund for the prepaid meal but it was not worth the effort. The highlight was the Doom bar which was excellent. We have marked it down to experience and will not return

Firstly, allow me to express how touched I am that you created a brand spanking sparkly new trip advisor just for us. We are truly touched.
However, allow us to tell the public who read this review what REALLY happened when you visited us.
When you ordered your meal, your exact words were:
'I want the liver cut up into strips and then burn it beyond all recognition'
The very experienced server laughed as she thought you were joking, but you continued, quite forcefully...
'No, I want it so well done, that just before he chucks it in the bin because its too well done, put it back on for another minute and then put it on my plate'.
Our waitress relayed this back to the chef, because of your insistence that she should. And then, you complained about your meal because it wasn't cooked enough for you.
So we find it absolutely laughable that your review here suggests that the liver was 'over cooked'.
You were unpleasant and obnoxious to our waitress who did everything she could to make you happy. So much so that she spoke to us about your rudeness to us at the end of service.
One of our waitresses did in fact offer you a replacement meal as even though you were highly unpleasant, she wanted to try and please you. An impossible mission.
None of our serving staff deserved your aggressive, defensive and unpleasant tone, so your threat to not return is in fact welcome news.
And fyi - all customers having to wear masks when standing comes into law tomorrow (Thursday) - and we will be enforcing it. We have served thousands of people since we re-opened and have received plenty of compliments about the social distancing measures. We also served 15 other liver portions last night with not one complaint, and full of compliments.

This restaurant is very average, no real complaints, but it’s nothing special. There is no personal service your food order is taken at the bar, whereas all the other restaurants we have eaten at in Cornwall still have waiter or waitress service. I would say it’s very much like school dinners, average food that’s fair value for money. It is in a lovely setting however parking is a bit of a nightmare and we had to park about 1/4 of a mile down the lane, but to be fair you do expect that in the countryside. It is an OK restaurant if you’re on holiday.

Thank you for your feedback Terry. we are sorry you didn't have an entirely positive experience. We have recently made the return to bar service when restrictions were lifted as we are such a busy pub, we don't have the capacity to offer table service to the standard that we would like. Unfortunately the parking is not ideal but it is a small village and there aren't really many places to park.

My family took me to dinner at the Inn which I used to visit years ago. The attitude was appalling demanding payment every time we ordered something instead of allowing a tab. Even though they knew several members of our group.
The food was very poor my fish pie contained two rock hard prawns and one piece of fish absolutely smothered in mash potato with very little sauce and the vegetables weren’t cooked. To cap it all the bar was almost empty but the waitress tried to sit two diners on an adjacent table which meant we would be touching one another. Clearly no thought for anyone’s safety during rising COVID numbers.
A very very disappointing experience at an establishment I know normally has better standards.

What a hidden gem! Best meal out of our holiday and we’d dined at some other very good pubs. What sets The Old Inn apart from the rest is undoubtedly it’s huge menu selection nearly all of which are homemade- and I mean homemade not home cooked. On top of this is the friendly and polite staff together with a lovely atmosphere.
My wife and I had the mussels to start, which were delicious and a good portion. The hunters chicken was lovely, with freshly made buttery mash and the children’s dinners were great, again all good portion sizes. I had the pulled pork bap with chips. It was nice in the main, however some of the pork was very dry. This was the only little thing and the puddings were out of this world. The cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding were wonderful - All homemade!
Many thanks to waitresses Millie & Anna and particularly to Dale who was also very pleasant and was accommodating to our needs.

Thank you so much for your lovely review Bigglesholt. it is very much appreciated! we do pride ourselves on our extensive menu and the fact that nearly everything is home made! Our chefs work very hard to produce top quality food and we use only the best ingredients. We apologise for the fact that you found some of the pork dry but we are glad you enjoyed our puddings, again home made! Also thank you for the positive comments about our team. We all strive to give the best levels of customer service so we are glad it doesn't go unnoticed.

On being seated we was advised of a 30 min wait for food this was actually an hour wait. When the food did turn up the monkfish was overcooked & still had the rubbery membrane still attached which we had to scrape off.
My ribeye which I asked for medium was over medium & not seasoned. The ribeye had the texture as is it had been left to rest (or stew) on plate with the wet under cooked mushrooms, wet peas & undercooked tomatoes while waiting for chips to cook which are just piled on top so any chips which did touch the plate or near place became a soggy mess.
I wasn’t expecting fine dining but for what We payed we both expect a lot more than we got

Had 4 takeaway meals from The Old Inn last night and they were all delicious. Huge portions, piping hot and all fresh local tasty ingredients. The service during these current circumstances was superb, easy to order and pay over the phone and arrange a pick up time whilst observing government guidelines. Would highly recommend to anyone to enjoy for themselves, you won’t regret it 👏🏻

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a good review on the takeaway service we offered during lockdown. It was certainly very popular! We took every care to ensure that our staff were working safely and we also made every measure to make customers feel safe when collecting their orders. Whilst we are now preparing to open, we will continue to offer our takeaway service even when we are open and allowing customers inside to dine and drink. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back soon when we are able.

Carvery back again so whilst our daughter is visiting us after a long time away, we decided to all go for a lovely family meal at lunchtime. With eight in our party, we had a really tasty carvery, all dished up superbly and piping hot, delicious! The children enjoyed their chicken nuggets meal too.
Thank you so much Old Inn, you never disappoint! At this strange time, the attention to all detail and service was great. We wish you all the very best for the future.

Being a Monday and out of session a few local restaurants around Bodmin were closed.
So I looked online for local pub that was open and recommended and The Old Inn at St Breward didn't disappoint.
Just to be safe i phoned and booked a table in the bar area, more atmosphere and plenty character, beams and a glowing log fire in one corner. I got a text soon after my call confirm my booking. Only the owner had booked me in for 6pm only for the day after! But when I phoned again he quickly corrected his mistake. On our arrival , after a few rather narrow lanes, the staff were welcoming and friendly. The place was well laid out and clean and distancing was in place.
Drinks were good value and promptly served as was the hot large delicious cod and chips my husband and I both decided on.
Would highly recommend eating at The Old Inn at St Breward but would strongly suggest you book in advance.

My family and I used this pub for dinner twice on our trip to Cornwall one on Sunday 6th September for a Carvery and again on 9th September. Both times the food was great and they have my favourite ale tribute on tap . Staff where polite and very helpful and the portions were plentiful. I would definitely recommend this pub and will definitely return for something to eat next year . Keep up the good work .

Last week we have dinner with family at the old Inn. Another's amazing meal. Food was lovely, very fresh and huge portion. Staff where all very friendly and helpful. One of my family members has food allergies, it was no bother to the pub. A member of staff came and took a list of his allergies for the kitchen and even adapted a meal for him! Couldn't ask for anything more!
