We are the Devon Section of the Alfa Romeo Owner’ Club. We needed an evening venue for a club night and Re:Fuel ticked all of the boxes. The management offered a BBQ with outside seating and a fantastic large gazebo (more like a Bedouin tent!). We had over 30 Cars an 40+ guests who all agreed that the food and venue was fantastic.
Can’t recommend it highly enough for a group event or if you wast a great bite just off the M5.
Thank we will be back!

Have been to The Steamer many many times now and have never been disappointed. The staff are always friendly, helpful and accommodating, the food is always hot and delicious. The venue is great with all the car events and car themes. The outside catering hut serves very good hot food also with a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks. We travel from Plymouth regularly, it's that good.

Modern, spacious café and kitchen. The staff are delightful. One especially lovely member of staff took her time talking to us and making us feel welcome, she asked if we had been before and offered a loyalty card. Nothing seemed to much for her. Although a bit quiet the staff all seemed to keep themselves busy. The breakfasts are amazing, brilliant chef, just the bacon was a little fatty but tasted lovely. I love the ambience of the place. Feels like there is something for everyone here. Will definitely revisit and bring along the rest of the family.

We booked a table for 16 people, including a number of small children under 5 years old, for a brunch. Unfortunately, when we arrived we discovered that there was an event on and that there would be a 1 hour wait for food as the coffee shop was VERY busy - predominantly with people getting take aways. This was far from acceptable given we had a number of young children in tow who have sleep and eating schedules. Disappointingly, this resulted in some children being given cake for lunch and the adults going without any food as nobody would be prepared to wait for an hour for an English breakfast.
Given we had booked in advance, it would have been appreciated if we had been warned about the event and the significant impact it would have on the coffee house (as clearly the coffee shop is catering far beyond its capacity when these events are taking place). This could have been followed up by offering to take pre-orders and/or confirming that we wanted to go ahead with the booking.
Finally, having booked in advance and informed them of the number of young children who would be attending, we were allocated a table which was far away from the children’s play area which wasn’t ideal.
Whilst this coffee house had previously been a pleasure to have visited as a family of three, expecting large bookings to wait an hour for food is just not good enough. If you are running events, you may as well close to the general public who aren’t attending that event.

I visited on Sunday 12th February at lunchtime to rendezvous with a travelling family member just off the M5. I had visited previously so knew about The Steamer. On the plus side this is a great concept for a 'diner' with loads of parking. There were plenty of friendly staff on hand and it wasn't at all busy at lunchtime.
I ordered two lunches at the counter. In the first instance the waitress had difficulty operating the ordering system - I couldn't add a side order of bacon to a breakfast as per the menu and I couldn't order a pot of tea only a cup. In the end a colleague had to be called to sort it out. The pot of tea never materialised and it was suggested that I ask for cup refills as required. Maybe some more training on the computer is required?
I ordered the beef stew. The waitress had to check whether this was available with kitchen which seems strange as the afternoon menu was limited to a handful of dishes and one would assume availability wouldn't be problem.
We waited for the order with our drinks and after five minutes the waitress came over and said the beef stew wasn't available so I said the vegetable stew would be fine instead.
After another wait of five minutes the waitress returned to say the beef stew was now available again so I said I'd have it as originally planned.
After another long wait, maybe 20+ minutes this time, the two meals arrived. I don't understand why it took so long given that there were lots of staff on duty and less than a dozen customers in the diner at the time.
It was clear straightaway that the stew was the vegetable stew not the beef as promised the second time around. I took it back to the counter and after a negotiation about a refund for the difference in cost, I suggested I had a small pastry to go with my cup of tea in lieu which was agreed.
For such a great place with so much going for it seems a real shame that a simple lunch order can be so difficult to achieve in a timely way. If I can pin it down - and this might be completely wrong - it seemed that nobody was in charge on the day or sufficiently interested to provide a good customer experience. Whilst the vegetable stew was good, almost £12 for a very small portion is not a 'cheap and cheerful' lunch so this cannot be an excuse.

Sad to say after previous visit this one was terrible . Arrived and the staff were playing loud music , I’m not a kill joy but I couldn’t have a conversation with my brother .. asked them to turn down a little which they did but after a few mins the volume crept up again .. Shane the staff don’t listen to the customer Breakfast took a while and we were first to order .. as to the breakfast an anemic looking sausage bacon not cooked a soggy hash brown and I didn’t know a chicken could lay an egg that small . Yes someone asked how the food was but didn’t complain because if you can’t be bothered to cook my breakfast properly the first time it’s called quality every time I’m not waiting to have it cooked again so safely won’t be returning

Hi, I am sorry to hear your visit was not up to our usual high standards. Had we known on the day, we would have ensured a fresh breakfast was cooked for you in a timely manner and checked by one of our senior team. Can you email me on simon@the-steamer.co.uk so we can offer a full apology. Best wishes, Simon

I’ve been to steamers quite a few times since it opened. Having a variety of items off the menu. And I now feel like I am able to give a good review of some ongoing trends I’ve noticed that others would probably appreciate knowing about before visiting.
Food choices & quality is good, not the most amazing available locally but good value and relatively quick. They’re also flexible if you have dietary requirements.
Service is usually pretty good although always short staffed at peak busy times.
Ambience- it’s always cold in there, even by the fire. Like wish I had a hot water bottle cold. Still cold in my coat cold.
Noise- this has been an ongoing issue, it’s too noisy, screaming kids, not just children playing but screaming a lot on every visit. To the extent you can’t hear yourself think. Because the building hasn’t got any sound deadening (note to owners to check the sound clouds at the mount vets in Wellington) or much soft decor like rugs or curtains to soften the sound the noise reverberates and makes it unpleasant. A number of different people I’ve met for a meal there have all said the same too. Overwhelmingly loud.
It’s parking is convenient and it’s well located but there are other places locally that are more enjoyable spaces to spend time in, and sadly we won’t be returning.

Ordered drinks, they took 5 minutes to arrive; very quick. Unfortunately, food took 40mins to arrive and the wait certainly didn’t reflect the quality. Poached eggs over cooked, bacon was like cardboard, sourdough bread seemed on the stale side BUT the sausages were good!
Shame because it’s an independent business; get those wrongs right and it’ll be a no brainer as a regular local breakfast/lunch haunt.

Have been several times and have had a tasty greasy spoon type breakfast … but last couple of times the standard has dropped considerably and the prices raised. Ordered a toasty and the chilli fries …. Took forever but when it came, the toasty was just soggy and falling apart and the chilli fries cold, greasy and flavourless. Most of it was left and binned… there were several young girls on duty but none popped over to check all was ok …. Shame to see it has started to loose its original standards.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave us your feedback. It is disappointing that you did not receive a check back as it sounds like much of this could have been resolved on the day. I apologize that the food was not up to our usual high standards. In terms of prices, the last menu update we did was in November 23 so there has not been any increases since then. But as you will be aware with living wage increasing in April most businesses will be forced to increase prices to remain sustainable and viable.
It would be really helpful if you can confirm the date & time of your visit so I can address this with the team that were on shift. My email is simon@the-steamer.co.uk
Many thanks, Simon

Ordered toasted sandwiches and drinks . Drinks were served with in 5mins but no sandwiches after 30mins . Communicated this to staff and were informed the food was only just beginning organised due to kitchen staff swap over . 5 mins later we had one sandwich which was cold and 5mins later the second sandwich that was to hot to eat .
Overall not worth the price or the wait

Hi Mark, thank you for leaving us your feedback. I apologize things were not up to our usual high standards. We will certainly take more care during staff changeovers that wait times do not suffer. This hasn't happened previously so please do give us another try as I'm sure it was a one off.

All I had was scrambled egg, bacon & sausages. Bacon was cold and so dried out it was akin to beef jerky. The sausages looked like they’d been cooked with a hair dryer. In hindsight they could have still been bit raw and I hope I don’t regret eating the 1st one now. I departed fairly quickly feeling a tadge rough.
Coffee was good though.

I have visited The Steamer Café several times as part of Re:Fuel events and my wife and I also stop off there sometimes for one of their great Full English breakfasts – plus their excellent coffee of course! This time however was the first where I had organised a group of 20 people to be there for lunch and I am delighted to report that the staff are equally friendly and helpful with a large group as they have been on every other occasion. The booking process was simple and the staff went out of their way to make us all feel welcome, they served us quickly and checked that everyone had their orders and was happy with them. So whether you are looking for a group venue or simply good food and service, The Steamer Café is highly recommended.

Fantastic food with brilliant staff. We stopped for lunch on the way to a family holiday, they could easily accommodate the large group of us and the soft play area was great for the kids. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We liked it so much we went again on our way home.

Our experience at The Steamer has been fantastic, one of the best coffee and food places I have ever been to. We stopped in here for brunch on our way to our holiday and was so impressed with the friendliness of staff, welcoming dog friendly environment that we have been back almost every day for breakfast and drinks, and each time welcomed back with amazing food and coffee. This is an excellent place that everyone should visit when in the area, they are pet friendly and have amazing activities to keep the kids entertained while we relaxed having coffee, which is from a local roast company and is out of this world. It’s a must stop and will be a regular stop for me and my family.
