Breakfast Fit For a Queen

My best friend and I like to tootle out for breakfast every now and then, and we have found our new favourite spot! It's great to see this landmark Peak District hotel brought back to life with such contemporary & comfortable style. And the food does it more than justice. We were sat in the light and airy bar with great views and both plumped for the Full English Breakfast (who can resist) and it was great. Fab, delicious local produce, real sour dough toast and crucially, scrambled and poached eggs cooked to perfection. Even when we were really quite full we had to keep going! Organic teas, a jug of water without having to ask, all for an excellent price -£22 for the two of us. The staff and service were delightful. We were lucky enough to have a quick tour of the restaurant and function room, which has been transformed and looks amazing. We're now really looking forward to returning for lunch or dinner and a perfect gin & tonic!

Last minute overnight stay

Last minute overnight stay on Saturday to meet up with my sister, choose location because it was central to us all travelling. Well it certainly didn’t disappoint, only re opened recently after new management/owner done some improvements to dining area and bar. The hotel has a lovely warm welcome and ample parking, greeting by staff when you first arrive is lovely. Our rooms weren’t ready so we went to the bar before venturing out to nearby National Trust Longshaw Estate which was simply beautiful, weather wasn’t great but added to the joy of the walk ! Upon returning we got some hot drinks from the bar again the staff are all just so nice and friendly making you feel relaxed. Rooms were lovely, we were told they were starting to work on returning each one over the months but were just finishing two new rooms ready to take bookings for weddings. Food was really really nice, service was brilliant and atmosphere was very relaxed everybody chatting think all the dogs made it feel homely too ;) Abby served us in the evening and what a lovely genuine person she was, total credit to the hotel engaging with everyone in a professional but friendly manner (that’s a quality you can’t teach to someone very natural leader!) my only negatives - light streamed through door from landing during the night had to put pillow across bottom to block it out, toilet seat not soft closing which caused a racket in the night, breakfast service was slow and they had no brown bread, cappuccino was only warm (just). I really wish them good luck in their ventures with this hotel, hard working lovely people ;)

Excellent Food and Staff following Refurb

Visited for the first time since the refurb on Valentines Day and we were not disappointed! The food was exceptional and I would definitely recommend the lamb shank. My wife is particularly fussy about her steak, but her medium-rare steak was cooked to perfection, not over-done as it often is in other places. We were well looked after by the bubbly Siobahn who helped us choose our dishes following much procrastination. Love the new branding although the refurb itself was a little underwhelming, but this didn't matter as the great food won us over. We look forward to visiting again.

Great place, fabulous menu and excellent service

We went here just after it had re-launched. We were seated quickly and presented with menus. There was such a great range of dishes that we could have opted for, all reasonably priced (unlike some places). I guess we'll have to go back to try others! I had the pork belly to start which was beautifully tender followed by the venison ravioli in sage and chorizo sauce. It was stunning, hubby, who had opted for the fish had real food envy even though his was beautiful! The service was friendly and professional. We both opted for the souffle which was lush. I'm pretty fussy with my food (and service) but simply couldn't find fault. We'll definitely be mking a return visit to try other menu food items and can highly recommend this place.

We were looking forward to trying the newly revamped Maynard and decided to visit with friends for dinner. Staff are well trained and attentive and the new decor is excellent. We all chose to go straight for a main course and all chose a different dish - being Almond crusted Salmon, the Duck Breast, Moroccan fish stew and Chunky beef shin Cottage Pie. My fish stew was tasty, but lacked "the catch of the day", having one small piece of white fish and a few prawns with about 6 mussels (three of which weren't open!) and not a sniff of coriander! My OH had the Cottage Pie, which was disappointing and this was pointed at the end of the meal. The beef shin was gristly and the whole dish was very small, so not a very satisfying meal. The pricing looked quite reasonable, but when considering that quite a few of the meals need 'extras', they work out not so. Will try again, but for us needs some improvement.

We had a very enjoyable family meal

We had a very enjoyable family evening. We ate in the restaurant with 4 adults & 2 teens. The waitress was very bubbly and helpful and given the covid circumstances she was very relaxed which made the experience enjoyable. We ordered the sharing flatbreads for starters and they were so tasty. A great little Mediterranean buffet. I can definitely recommend the chicken Katsu curry, I’d been looking forward to trying it and was not disappointed. Crispy chicken & a slightly spicy curry sauce to pour over!! And I absolutely loved my selection of small desserts and an espresso- in fact everyone loved their desserts. I loved the wine list, the Marlborough Sauvignon blanc and the Malbec were great choices for us. We moved into the bar area for drinks after our meal, there were other tables of drinkers which made a nice atmosphere, most local, decent, eateries are lacking in atmosphere after 9pm! I can’t wait to come back here after covid & enjoy the full service, tablecloths and all, as I imagine it will be truly amazing.

Just the best birthday ever!

I have just has a lovely overnight stay here at The Maynard for my 50th Birthday. My family and I were absolutely spoilt by the staff from the moment we walked in. The rooms were very comfortable and clean and crikey if I’m honest I didn’t want to book out! The staff sang happy birthday to me after our evening meal complete with cake which family had treated me too and they all provided a first class service with a friendly personal touch. I haven’t been to a place for a long while where I have felt so relaxed and pampered. If you are looking for somewhere to stay or searching for somewhere to eat then please go and try The Maynard, Rob and his very professional staff will definitely look after you. Food is delicious and hospitality second to none. What more do you need? Oh I do know what you may need and that’s a fab venue for your wedding or event well I went for a look at The Chatsworth Suite also at The Maynard and was totally blown away with how beautiful it was. Go take a look, you won’t be disappointed. Me? Well I’m off to plan my next visit!

Inconsistent quality

We picked this restaurant as it had a good selection of gluten free choices. The calamari starter was very bland and floury. The duck salad was ok but had very litte duck. As the main course of lamb steak only came with chips we ordered a side of greens, this was a bowl of peas with one piece of brocoli and 2 green beans. The burger was excellent and so were the deserts (mixed plate). The location, and views from the restaurant are great. Despite having a refit with modern touches, the overall interior decoration is very basic, with lino on the floor and chairs that are looking a bit worn. Our waitress, Kate was very attentive. Overall it was a bit of a let down and since it was an anniversary meal we felt we could have made a better choice elsewhere.

Excellent takeaway

During the current lockdown, The Maynard are providing a takeaway service, with the cuisine theme changing each week. The Sunday Roast was cooked to perfection, and this weekends Katsu Curry was incredibly flavoursome. The Maynard takeaway is becoming our weekend ritual, and we’re already looking forward to next weekends burger offering. Also, NHS staff currently eat for free, which is a touching gesture of thanks. Highly recommended!

Fabulous Valentine’s Takeaway

We were highly delighted with the 3 course takeaway and complimentary chocolates. All courses were really delicious with minimal work needed to complete the preparations at home. The menu provided a good choice and we settled on the sushi starter, beef Wellington main and chocolate fondant dessert. We were not disappointed. In fact, very impressed! The complimentary chocolates were the ‘icing on the cake’ as they were homemade and just so pretty. It was a real treat and an experience we would happily repeat in future years. We are now looking forward to visiting the restaurant when it is able to reopen.

First post lockdown meal

A warm welcome when we arrived and were taken to our table. They explained that under the new restrictions we could either order via a website or with the server. The food was ok. Starters better then the main courses. The burger was homemade and tasty although the processed cheese slice spoilt it and some of the chips hard and didn’t seem triple cooked. The service friendly and efficient. The Rioja wine we choose was delicious.

Although, I am sad to hear you did not enjoy the food as much as you would have liked. The burgers are a renowned favourite of our customers here simple because all our ingredients are sourced locally especially, the meat as it comes from New Close Farm in Bakewell. The cheese in which we use is actually Emmental which originates in Switzerland, it has a mild but savoury taste which binds all our ingredients together to leave a fantastic tasting burger. Good food, beautiful setting

We had dinner at the Maynard earlier this week and though it was very busy there were some social distancing measures in place to control it and hand sanitiser at the entrance, though not as many safety measures as other places I've visited so more could be done. The staff were very welcoming and we were seated within a few minutes at a comfortable distance from other diners. The Maynard has been renovated recently and it looks great. The menu choice was good - pub food but on the slightly higher end. The food itself was tasty though I would say that the quinoa served with the tagine was a bit sparse - less than two tablespoons worth - but luckily I'd ordered chips on the side so had something to accompany the tagine stew. Dessert was by far the best part of the meal, delicious! Overall, I thought the staff were friendly and the food was good if not necessarily anything special but the star of the show was really the beautiful setting and views across the valley.

We enjoyed a very pleasant evening meal in the comfortable dining room, with great views over the garden and surrounding valley. Menu choices were interesting and varied, and the food that arrived was excellent with generous portions and great flavours. Staff were helpful and efficient; our main waitress, Lexi, gave us helpful advice about menu choices, remaining attentive without being instrusive throughout the evening. Covid 19 guidelines were in place so we felt safe and relaxed. We look forward to coming again!

After an 8 k walk and then being turned away at the greasy spoon cafe at the local station because, 1, we had a dog and 2, we wanted to pay in a 21st century/ Covid secure way, we walked a little way and received a very warm welcome at this class Hotel. The staff on reception and in the bar were very attentive and friendly. We chose to share a lunch classic and the waitress brought two sets of cutlery and, when the food arrived, an extra plate, all without being asked. We had two delicious very large real coffees and water with our food which was perfectly cooked and hot. It is almost implausible that a country house hotel would welcome a little dog yet a greasy spoon cafe would not. Oh well Grindleford station caff did us a favour in the end. We are fairly local so I’m sure we will return to The Maynard.

A great weekend away with the dog

We had a really lovely three nights at the Maynard, with dinner each evening to save driving, and we couldn't have been happier. The welcome was so warm, even for our boisterous dog, and the food terrific. We booked a fairly low-end room but it was extremely comfortable - next time we'll try to book one with a view, since it is so stunning. We made a good tour of the menu and the food was without exception delicious, beautifully prepared and presented. Just lovely! We'll do our very best to be back soon.
