What a treat. Traditional French cuisine with a lovely menu in an hotel that values and presents excellent service. We loved it and will return when we can next afford it!

A delightful, generous restaurant with a large car park and friendly, helpful staff. Three of as enjoyed dinner here and had a most enjoyable evening. £45 for three delicious courses is very reasonable and includes nibbles with pre-dinner drinks, an amuse bouche, and petit fours...with coffee. The guinea fowl is especially recommended. Lounge with comfortable sofas for pre-dinner drinks and coffee. Dining room spacious with well spaced tables furnished with beautiful linen, cutlery and crockery. WonderfulMore
We had lunch here today and we’re astonished that there was only one other table occupied. This is French cuisine of the highest quality. We chose from the a la carte menu and would have been delighted with anything on the menu. The food is...expertly cooked and beautifully presented and the service was charming. At £55 for three courses (plus canapés, an amuse bouche, a sorbet and a pre dessert, it is amazingly good value for food of such quality.More
A wonderful evening at this excellent, traditional fine dining restaurant. This was a return visit after several years, as we were visiting on holiday. To us it was a delight to find the quality of the food, the lovely, gentle welcome and service, and all...the little 'treats' between courses remained in place. This is one of the few restaurants we have been to recently where everything is about the food. Excellent ingredients, beautifully prepared and cooked. An amuse boucle with drinks beforehand, another delicious Crayfish mousse taster before the meal. Complimentary bread... something we see less and less. The £55 3 course menu had an excellent range of options, including fillet steak, which my husband chose, and it was delicious and so tender. A calvados granite palate cleanser before the main course, and a pre-dessert are all included in the £55, which we felt was excellent value for a meal of this quality. The decor is comfortable and traditional, but it is the food that counts! Perfect for a special celebration, or just a relaxed meal with friends. We just wish we lived nearer. Thank you so muchMore
Turned up out of the blue for lunch today (Saturday) and received a warm and gentle welcome. Sundial is a delight, in a classic way; we sat in a sofa with a drink while pouring over a wide range of menu items, we're supplied with...canapés before being shown to our table. Food and wine were delicious. Atmosphere very comfortable. A gem of a restaurant and we hope to go back when next in the area. So please everyone pay a visit, well worth it.More
The Sundial never disappoints when it comes to real fine dining, exquisite food, and charming ambience. We have visited on many occasions, and each visit is as wonderful as the rest. Food is first class, beautifully presented and tastes delicious. Service is outstanding, attentive whilst...subtle. Cannot recommend highly enough!More
We had not visited the Sundial for a while, but it was just lovely to revisit. What I like is that you sit in the lounge area while having an aperitif, and looking at the menus and wine list. The table is beautifully laid out,...and the service is attentive but unobtrusive. The food is excellent and beautifully presented, and is described when delivered to the table. It is how fine dining should be, great food, great drink, and well paced so that you have time to chat with friends during the meal. Allow plenty of time so that you can savour every moment. A meal at the Sundial is a real treat. Looking forward to our next visit already!More
This was my second visit to Sundial and it was another visit which will be remembered for all the right reasons!! The welcome was warm, petite fours and drinks relaxing before we were shown to our table. We had the taster menu and what a...treat that was!! Each course was delicious and savoured. The service was excellent yet not intrusive. My second visit will most definitely not be my last!! Really can't understand the poor reviews! Was the evening cheap? no. Was it more than fitting for a celebration with great food? Most definitely yes! The only sadness is I live far too far away from Sundial for it to become a regular haunt.More
I have been going to the Sundial for nearly 50 years with different chefs, nationalities and twice with the current owners. I went with someone who works in hospitality and is lucky enough to visit world class places so we are likely to be picky.....Neither of us were bowled over this time and you should be at this end of the market. It was pleasant but everyone and everything seemed just a tad wilted. Not sure if that will be my last visit - sadly it might beMore
This restaurant may be dated, but this only adds to its charm. From start to finish this was a unique dining experience. The decor is out dated, but classy. A chance to truly exit the rat race. Once I'd gotten over the formalities and the...way in which this place runs, I had a beautiful time with my parter. Its unusually quiet as you walk in, you're seated in reception, with not much explanation and then you're immediately handed some 80's themed entrees - for me this was an addition to the character of the place. Varied menus and wine list. The house red was superb alone. The food was tasty, interesting and extremely well executed by the head chef and staff. Before long, myself and my partner were relaxed and thoroughly enjoying the whole experience. The Sundial runs a tight ship. It is genuinely old school, you feel looked after with an air of significant professionalism all about you. There are no places like this now, sometimes stepping back in time isn't such a bad thing. We will most certainly be returning.More
We had a lovely meal tonight. Food was delicious and service was really good. Not sure why people are giving it a bad review. Everything we had was Amazing. I think this restaurant is a real little gem and we will definitely be back
Exceeded all expectations, We read some recent reviews and thought maybe we would not enjoy. We started with a very open mind after being recommended to go there. We had a lovely welcome, sat drinking an aperitif with very tasty nibbles whilst choosing our menu...and wine. Many couples, groups joined in different areas, sofas, bar, etc and chatted to a few. We moved to our table, everything taken for us and then our pre starter came. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 courses and the wonderful unexpected additional small plates in between and after our meal. We chose our wine and we were very happy with the service given , very much attention to detail. The ambiance was very typical of many fine dining restaurants we have visited over many years in France. We defiantly go back and wish we had found this sooner.More
My partner and i were nicely greeted and made to feel very welcome upon our arrival . We sat and chose our drinks and food within a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere before being shown to our table . Petit fours and Our food courses were...way below average including the desserts which my partner was unable to eat , and all of this was priced at a hefty premium! We always give reviews for the many restaurants we have dined in around the country and it is very seldom we give poor reviews but for the £185 bill that we received for 2 we expect a bit of a wow factor . The quality of the food and prices don't match.More
We had a really fun relaxed evening but I do think the restaurant could do with a bit of modernising. Service was impeccable and most of the food was lovely. But there could be a better veggie option. I found the aubergine main to be...v salty. I didn’t think price was too bad considering it is more high end. But it is a little dated inside and I think overall I wouldn’t rush backMore
A group of old friends that we always celebrate New Year with had the idea of having a "Come Dine with Me" NYE dinner and for back up in case everything went south we arranged New Year's Day lunch at the Sundial, which was recommended...by one of our party. There was a special NYD menu on offer - 6 courses for £75 pp. Of course the 6 courses included a small Amuse Bouche and a palate cleansing sorbet, so we weren't going to get too stuffed - or so we thought. The reception we received was warm and friendly, we were shown to some comfy chairs around a low table, provided with menus and offered a pre lunch drink. The speciality drink was the house festive Champagne Cocktail and four of our party took this, I had a wonderful Dry Martini. All were pronounced excellent as we pondered the menu and nibbled on some complimentary canapés (very good). The menu itself offered a choice of three starters, four main courses and two puddings and I'd say there was something for pretty much everyone. But first the Amuse Bouche (or Amuse Guele as my French teacher would insist). This was a moussey sort of Salmon foam and was beautifully intense. The chosen starters were the warm lobster and Quail salad and the Terrine de Fois Gras de Canard. Both were really very good. A mix of main courses saw our party enjoy some Roast Goose with a fruity reduction (cherry I believe) a Chateaubriand en Croute and a Mushroom Wellington and again they were all excellent. Puddings were a choice of Chocolate and Chestnut Mousse or Pear and Pine Nut Tart. In both cases these were accompanied by a sorbet or a panacotta and each mouthful was a delight. The between courses sorbet and pre-dessert lollipop were beautifully done and offered a real zing to re-awaken the palate. The meal concluded with coffee, petits fours and a digestif for the boys - the girls were a little more sensible. With the meal we tried the Pouilly Fume and a Givry, which offered pretty good value and were served just right. The portion size ranged from just right (starter) to generous (main course) and back to just right for the pudding. We did not go hungry. Was it cheap? That would be a no. Did we consider it good value? Very much a yes. If I am paying a higher than usual price for a meal I want to eat food that I wouldn't have a hope in hell of making myself and I want to be looked after in a friendly, professional manner and the Sundial did not disappoint on either case. If I were to change one thing on our visit it would be to opt for tap water rather than the bottled stuff as it keeps coming and bumps things up a bit, but apart from that it was pretty damn close to perfection. We will return.More
