Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel could be great, but…it wasn’t. We stayed for one night as a short post-Christmas break. I phoned up and spoke to the owner / manager to book and she assured me that the hotel was open and food/drink would be available- as it...was very cold weather and the village is quite remote, we didn’t fancy having to drive to get dinner - and that she would be there to meet us when we arrived . We arrived late afternoon and the owner wasn’t there although we were assured by the barman that she would be there soon. We had a couple of drinks and were shown to our room. The room was okay, reasonably clean but a bit ‘tired’ looking. When we came down the owner was there. She introduced herself and proceeded to tell us how unwell she was but that she would make us dinner. We ordered and my husband had a steak. The owner (also chef) then told him that she made an amazing whisky sauce. When the food arrived, there was no sauce and no sign of the owner. It was like she’d disappeared off the face of the earth, including the next morning when she was supposed to cook breakfast but again, didn’t appear. I went looking for her and the whole place was like the Marie Celeste. We eventually went across the road to the village shop / cafe, where we got some breakfast. I genuinely struggled about whether to post this review as the owner was obviously unwell when we visited and it seems a bit mean but we did pay good money for a really disappointing and awkward time. The hotel itself could have been a bit cleaner and definitely needed some TLC. On a positive note, the food that we did have was lovely and the barman that helped us was very helpful but really, this is no way to run a businessMore

Avoid like the plague(to be honest you might catch it here) turned up no heating no food available no electricity in certain areas. Bedding damp with no clue how to they would end up dry. Offered d us to stay... As if. Said she couldn't...contact us due to a mobile number change however email was the same. The place unfortunately looks run down and unloved which is a shame.More

Turned up our party of ten (6adults 4 kids) after booking almost a year ago. Was told they had no hot water no heating and electric in only certain parts of hotel! Non the less was offers to stay anyway no idea why? And offered...a complimentary drink useful when half of the party was driving! Wouldn’t even recommend visiting her to anyone.More

Absolutely brilliant delicious food piping hot and served to perfection. Even went out of their way to make sure that they had fish in so that we could have the most delicious fish and chips before we left

Avoid at all costs! Extremely rude front-of-house staff. Turned up without a reservation at 7:30pm and were told we needed to book. That's fair enough but the manner we were spoken to was appalling. I've honestly never been treated in that way in hospitality. Judging...by the other reviews now, I'm glad we didn't get served as the food would have been as bad as the service.More

Our recent visit to The Kirky Bar left me and my partner utterly disappointed and frustrated. Upon arriving at the restaurant, my partner and I were met with unwelcoming glances from both the staff and the clientele. The atmosphere was tense, and it seemed as...though we were intruding on a private gathering rather than walking into a public dining space. The real shocker came when we encountered the manager, who was more interested in delivering an unsolicited lecture rather than ensuring a pleasant dining experience for us. Apparently, the sin we committed was not booking a table in advance. She then went on to say that all paces required booking (as if this was an absolute). After she said her peace she completely ignored us, leaving us to walk out awkwardly without saying anything. The ambience was as horrid as it was unwelcoming, it wasn't kept well (I would say it felt slightly un-hygenic) and the food didn't look particularly appetizing. Me and my partner had just gotten done hiking and went to the first pub we saw, too bad it was The Kirky Bar. Avoid this place like the plague, you will be glad you gave it a miss.More

We did not have a booking and were told they were fully booked. However, the manner was rude , unhelpful, and unwelcoming. No handsoap in toilets. Tables were not clean. Will not be back.

We were staying locally for one night and thought we would try the local pub for food/drinks- we soon regretted that! It is clearly an establishment that only really welcomes locals and we felt completely out of place from the outset. (And I’d like to...think we are friendly people). The place is dirty and full of flies-we picked drinks in sealed bottles as we didn’t trust anything else. The ladies toilets were disgusting (so I can only imagine how awful the gents would have been). We should have left at that point but made the bad decision to stay for food. No menus and only a whiteboard on which the choices got changed every few minutes (all items spelt wrong and everything £14.95!) My husbands meal was medicocre at best (frozen scampi and chips) mine was sent back twice and I left without eating anything (which was announced by the female ‘chef’ to the whole pub of locals very loudly - just to make sure everyone was aware). Because the local shop was now closed, my dinner consisted of some crisps and chocolate at our apartment when we walked back. This place should be avoided at all costs-it is a health hazard and the people running it are completely rude and clearly don’t care about customers in the slightest. I have never been so pleased to head home in my life! This is without question the worst establishment we have ever set foot in.More

Booked for dinner here. Arrived but no-one serving behind the bar. Sat down and waited. A busy friendly woman appeared and took the order for our drinks and a little while later, our food. Overall, an uncomfortable atmosphere and unpleasant experience. The food when it...arrived was pretty poor. No cutlery offered until requested. Won't be returning anytime soon.More

I interacted with 2 members of staff during this stay, both ladies were very pleasant and helpful. Firstly at check-in and secondly when asking for towels. However, if you are unfortunate enough to arrive before the front door of the hotel has been opened (after...3pm) and enter via the public bar, you'll be met with the sight and smells of a very run dow establishment. My heart sank the second I stepped over the threshold. However, the cheerfulness of the barefooted lady booking us in, convinced us to give it the benefit of the doubt. We were shown to our room on the first floor, up a flight if stairs that looks like it's never seen a vacuum cleaner and the smell from the bar following us. Used towels lined the floor of the hallway and we were informed that the lady hadn't finished cleaning the rooms and she would return to our room with clean towels directly. That didn't happen and I had to go and request them later. The room - we had a family room which was a good size with a large kingsize bed and a single bed. However, the headboard above the kingsize had been defaced, the carpet had numerous stains, the grouting around the shower was grubby, the wood round the window frame was rotting under the numerous layers of peeling paint, the main ceiling light wasn't working. Worst still, when we were getting ready to retire for the night, my child found crumbs in her bed and there were stains on the sheets of the kingsize, leaving us to conclude that the sheets hadn't actually been changed since the previous guests. By this time it was too late to speak to anyone so we went to bed and made use of the hot water in the morning to wash off the grubbiness. Although when I unravelled my towel to get dried after the shower, it had several brown stains which looked disgusting, although the towels did smell like they had been in a tumble dryer for too long so I'm hoping they had actually been washed. We didn't want to take our chances with anything coming from the kitchen so didn't stay for breakfast. We hadn't been expecting a lot from this hotel but we were expecting it at least to be clean. I will never return to the Kirkmichael Hotel and wouldn't recommend to anyone.More

Absolutely terrible customer service from entering the pub, as that’s all it really is, a smelly dirty auld pub, with five disgusting filthy bedrooms. Food was not nice at all, and my breakfast was the worst I’ve had in oven 40 years. I couldn’t even...drink the coffee. I went for breakfast and was asked to come back in half an hour as the woman serving, was suffering from a late night 🥃🍻🍺. When I returned, there was used dishes lying everywhere, and I had no cutlery, or bowl for cereal, so took a glass from another table and poured an orange juice. That was the only think I could swallow for my breakfast. I was eventually served a cooked breakfast that was inedible. I couldn’t even cut the potatoe-scone, it was like wood, and the bacon was like glass. The after asking 3 times I got a teapot of coffee, which was so black and thick, I poured extra milk in to try and make it drinkable, but it was absolutely disgusting. I left everything and checked out. This couple need to find another job. How can you have the cheek to call this dump an hotel. I will never recommend this place, and the will never get another penny from me. Yuk yuk yuk.More
