Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Quiet pub, very friendly and polite locals. Food is fantastic. Would recommend, as long as it doesn't get too busy! Decor not great.

This quaint little place used to be lovely. A lively, and generally civilised establishment. As a direct neighbour of the Royal Oak, I can tell you that it has quite literally gone to the dogs. It's hardly ever open, the food is unreliable at best,...in both its demand and deliverance. The place can't be taking any money. It has a very small few die hard pensionable parishioners that drop in for 'a' pint when it bothers to open. The guy that's in charge now, clearly has all the ambition of a 10 week old root vegetable. Which would leave one to to believe, that he has time on his hands. It is my firm belief, that he uses this time, to promptly evict his large German shepherd into the yard at the rear of the property at all hours of the day and evening, for very lengthy periods of time. The poor animal, is out in all weather's, crying, whimpering and barking. It is never ever walked. The poor creature is not to blame. I'm hoping, a fellow animal lover, with an untamed vocabulary reads this, and visits the Royal Oak at such a time when they can be bothered to open up the doors. However, no amount of talking nicely to any member of staff, has thus far improved life for the dog, or anyone in a 700 yard radius. Good luck...xMore

Having served with Gurkha soldiers several times, I am always happy to try their cousine, and the experience at the Royal Oak did not disappoint. Charming, pub-classic environment, lovely bar lady (Georgina), tasty food. Being a pre-dinner, unplanned cheeky meal, we could not enjoy a...bigger selection of plates but we hope to go there again soon for a full meal. This time we tried momo, paneer and samosa. All super tasty and very enjoyable.More

Worst dinner experience ever. One poor chap doing everything. Waited forever for our starters; hot dinner plates arrived but then went cold as we waited some more. The waiter then appeared with our rice dishes and two of our mains. We asked if we could...have our starters first so the tray of food went back to the kitchen. Our starters duly arrived but were very disappointing. When our mains were served they had obviously been kept warm but not successfully and had to go back to be reheated. We were told on numerous occasions that they were very busy! This was not the case as most tables were empty. Not a pleasant experience never to be repeated. It was only pity for the poor chap serving that we didn’t walk out half way through the meal.More

I booked this venue by e-mail but didn't get a reply so i phoned up a week before my wife's birthday to make sure they had the booking but they didn't. So I booked a table for three in the restaurant for the Monday. A...day before we were due to go I got a call saying that the restaurant does not open on a Monday. If they responded to e-mails this could have been avoided and if staff were better trained this also would have helped.More

Absolutely delicious food, friendly staff, real ale on tap. What more could you want. The dumplings and sizzlers are popular and very good. Chef came out to serve, would recommend eating here. Glad we tried this place.

I've been to Royal Oak with my sister and her partner last night. It was busy Saturday night but happily we've been given a nice table straight away. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, we've got our drinks very quickly and placed our order....Starters arrived promptly and we're very nice. The food is freshly cooked and you can appreciate the wait, because everything take came to our table was absolutely fabulous. This was my first time eating in Royal Oak even though I like in Stokenchurch over a year now and I'm angry with myself I haven't tried it sooner! The food is so affordable also but the quality and taste of the dishes are really top of the game. I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back soon. Again thank you so much to the lovely staff, everything about our experience was great and I'm so so happy I've now discovered my favourite place to dine in. Highly recommend!More

Lovely pub with Nepalese theme. Very nice momos with spicy tomato chutney and great Gurkhas revenge curry to follow. Lady hostess and staff very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend.

Very friendly and chatty hostess. We sat in the small restaurant part of the pub, with our dog, no problem. Many more dishes on the menu than are shown on the website. We both had lamb dishes, both delicious and beautifully cooked- the lamb shank...fell off the bone. The Royal Oak cheese and garlic naan was delightful. Food took a while, but we were first in for lunch and it was obviously freshly made, so no groans. Only thing I noticed was that the floor was a bit grubby, but the loos were spotless. Well done, we'll be back.More

Great to see Nepalese available outside of Oxford. Essentially, still a drinkers’ pub, but with a small dining room attached, it doesn’t look like somewhere where you can get great food, but it really surprised us. We loved how it was informal, unpretentious and reasonably...priced, yet serving superb cuisine. The Vegetable Momo (dumplings) and Chilli Paneer were particularly noteworthy. It may have an unusual location and not have an upmarket decor, but we found it very charming and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Staff and locals were helpful and very friendly too. We will certainly be coming back.More
