About
The Woolpack, dating from 1410, retains many of its original features such as wattle-and-daub walls and a low, beamed ceiling. Its name comes from its popularity with `owlers'- wool smugglers- who used the inn as a base for their lucrative trade. The Woolpack is so perfectly old-fashioned that very little had to be altered when, in 1947, scenes from `The Loves of Joanna Godden' were filmed there. Located in great walking country, the Woolpack is a perfect place to stop and satisfy the thirst and appetite during a day out in the country. Excellent traditional pub food is served with all fish and game are locally sourced and the delicious mature British beef steaks are always prepared to the individual

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I've always loved this pub, first went aged 1 with parents, though can't remember it. Been many times but this was the first for 10 years and it didn't disappoint. It's a gorgeous 600 year old building set in the Romney Marshes of Kent, with...low beams, roaring fires and more homely for it. We had lunch, starter of fresh devilled whitebait, so good, my 8 year old son simply demolished his plate and came for mine. Local Lamb shank, slow cooked the meat fell off the bone, beg and mash of highest quality. The Chicken and Leak pie was, according to my wife, wonderful, and full of flavour. Stocking the full range of Shepherd Neame beers, local too, being a SN pub I guess that's obvious, but really good beers none the less. Very well priced for the quality and the service. It won't be 10 years till we go again.More

Just happened upon this pub whilst on holiday and on the way back from Rye on A259. So glad we stopped, lovely welcome by staff and locals, amazing food, belly busting portions. Will return again before going home.

We were driving home from a day out and needed to find somewhere for dinner. Google suggested the Woolpack so we went there. Thank goodness for Google. The welcome was warm, and the food excellent. We had the haddock and chips special and the Prawn...Marie Rose salad. Having not eaten for most of the day we were ravenous and devoured them. The salad was fabulous with lots of lovely things included. The only issue for me was the coleslaw that had a bit too much mayo, but that is a personal thing. The fish and chips were bang on. We don't often drive that way home, but now have more of a reason for doing so.More

My Son and two Grandchildren came across the Woolpack Inn purely by chance .... It dates back to 1410 AD and has kept its charm in every sense of the meaning .. The staff were helpful and attentive...... We enjoyed our meal which were classic...pub Cuisine .. Large, tasty portions and served with a smile... However, if you want a typical Sunday Roast we learnt that you need to be sat by mid day.. As it sells out very quickly..More

By far our favourite place to go, decent portions and great value. My favourite is the roast dinner, gravy is just so delicious so much so I always ask for extra! But I tried the homemade chilli con carne at the weekend from the specials...board and that was possibly the best I’ve ever had! Really friendly staff and just a lovely little place to unwind in.More

Have read some very scathing reviews about this place and frankly I don't know why? The welcome when 6 of us walked in was good the staff had to move a couple of tables around to accommodate us which was done without any trouble. Our...drinks order was taken at the table and then after time to pick our meal choice was also taken again with out any trouble. The food when it arrived was fantastic. All together a thoroughly enjoyable experience and if my wife and I lived closer we'd definitely visit again thank you Woolpack. 😋👍😀💂‍♂️More

Had an excellent Sunday lunch. Charming old pub, with log fire. Very well cooked and well presented roast dinner. Plenty of roast ham/gammon, we counted 5 or 6 veggies, roast pot's and a big Yorkshire. Excellent Shepherd Neame Spitfire on draft. My daughter had the...kids Scampi and left a clean plate (very rare for her!) Had only visited once before for a regular weekday lunch, that was very good too - (btw) I'm a British expat returning on family visit, rather than an American tourist. Will def want to return on my next visit back to UK.More

Plenty of other better establishments nearby to go to where the service and food is so much better. Staff interaction here is terrible with lack of customer care skills at the most basic level

Have been coming here for years, never had a bad meal. Great traditional pub grub, a lot of which is homemade. Can't believe some of the reviews are genuine stating microwave food as it definitely isn't! Good portion sizes and lovely food, we will be...back. Lovely roast dinners.More

We passed the woolpack inn on our way to Rye,with our intention of eating in one of the pubs there ,However the town was very busy ,almost claustrophobic & full of cyclists who were dressed as though they were competing in le tour de France!...We...decided to give Rye a miss & go back to that pub we saw The woolpack inn. Dog friendly, a great pint (3 actually) & exceptional ham egg and chips (large amounts of all 3) Watch out for the low door frames though !!More

I worked at the Woolpack 10 years ago and went back to see how it is doing. Although the menu is much the same, sad to say it’s not a patch on what it was. The menu descriptions of the dishes sound very tempting but...the actual product is a real letdown. We had “ Three Cheese Macaroni Bake” which had no real hint of any cheese let alone three, very bland. Also Ham Egg and Chips Ham, fine Eggs fine, chips frozen not hand cut, and frozen peas, very lacklustre. My pint of Whitstable was flat and over cooled. The whole experience came to £34 won’t be going back I’m afraid.More

As others have already said, see the menu on line. They will be okay if you have any special needs - just phone the pub before you go.
