Busy with local drinkers but that just creates a great atmosphere for those eating. The food was fantastic pigeon, pheasant and pork amongst our choices..but so many things to pick means you just have to go back!

We visited this pub, on a Tuesday evening, had not bothered to book a table, and fortunately we got in, and enjoyed a lovely meal, roaring log fire, and a good pint. I had pheasant breast, delicious and a large helping, with lots of veggies, my girlfriend had the vegetarian "Tarte Tatin" which I think was with goats cheese, and... More

On a crisp Autumn day in the New Forest the crackling fire as we arrived was a toasty welcome to this charming thatched inn and restaurant. The service was well paced and extremely jolly. The local venison with blackcurrant jus and vegetables and R.AT. Burger with twice cooked chips were great, as was the sticky toffee and bread and butter... More

This is a rather nice quiet pub with an excellent food menu. The reservation was made by phone on a recommendation - very polite and thorough details were taken , even down to which table ! Delightfully helpful lady behind the bar does everything front of house, the beer was kept well and a rather "olde worlde" feel about the... More

We had a really fantastic evening at The Rose & Thistle this weekend - delicious food, great wine, friendly staff and playing scrabble in front of the fire - no better way to spend a winter's evening. Thank you Rose & Thistle - we would definitely recommend, and will definitely be back!

We chose this pub for a treat Sunday lunch. I selected the scallops with black pudding and pea puree (rather overpriced for the portion) and my husband, the potted shrimps which was a generous starter. The steak and kidney pudding was excellent and the RAT burger was ok. The puddings were delicious. Our drinks were a Moretti beer, a bitter... More

Really looked forward to a visit to this pub as recommended by Alistair Sawday!! Maybe its time he revisited and wrote another review, as it was very dissapointing, we were met by very surly staff, really felt like it was a huge inconvenience to them that we there. The roast beef was ok but sadly served on stone cold plate as... More

My wife and I ate there on Sunday having booked a couple of days previously. The booking experience was excellent. We have eaten in there in July this year but on this occasion we were looking forward to a roast dinner. The car-park whilst small was okay and we parked without a problem. The table we were shown to was... More

I visited on a miserable damp autumnal day but my spirits were instantly lifted by a mixture of a delightful beamed building, cosy bar and restaurant all topped off by an open log fire. Things continued along at a high level when the food menu was seen. Many mouthwatering dishes, each one seemingly given quite a lot of thought by... More

The pub was originally four farm cottages and was converted in the 19th century to form a lovely pub/restaurant with lots of nooks and crannies. We went there as guests of a friend whose first choice for lunch was closed and we were warmly met and offered a choice of tables. The menu was varied and attractive with the food... More

The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
