Following so many positive reviews for the Rose and Thistle, my husband and I decided to visit for lunch while on holiday in the New Forest. Although off the beaten track it was well worth the effort! From the warm welcome we received when we parked the car, to entering the bar, we were made to feel like regulars. The... More

Fantastic Easter Sunday lunch, food was perfect - from starters to pudding, all were delicious. Really nice menu choice, not massive but perfectly balanced in variety to suit all - including our 2 children (7&8 years). Definitely recommend and will be returning 😀

Our first visit to one of our favourite pubs since it has been under the new ownership of Chris - who is fantastic. He gave us a wonderful warm welcome the minute we stepped into the gorgeous cosy bar. We had our dog with us (equally warmly welcomed) so sat by the roaring log fire in the bar. Lunch was... More

Visited today with some friends and we were not disappointed. The staff were friendly and there was a good selection of dishes on the menu. I ordered the R.A.T burger,a s well as tasting delicious it was massive. The only downside was I couldn't fit in a sticky toffee pud! We will definitely be back.

This was our first visit since Chris has taken over from Kerry and we were a little apprehensive as it used to be so good and we'd heard things had deteriorated. NOT ONE BIT! The food was as great as our last visit and the service was friendly, efficient and welcoming. If you haven't been......GO!

We were warmly welcomed by Chris, who seated us by the log fire on a wet Monday evening in March. My cod was perfectly and lightly cooked and complemented by a mix of delicately cooked vegetables. My partner had the steak and kidney pudding. Generous portions which were elegantly presented. To follow we had fruit crumble ( Apple , pear... More

Great food excellent service, now my favourite 'food pub' can't wait to go back! I went a year ago, but decided to go back as I heard it had new owners. I must say I think its got better, amazing food attentive service that you would expect from a high class resturant.

I picked the restaurant from Trip Advisor and was not disappointed. The food was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It was a lovely touch that all mums received a small bunch of daffodils as it was Mothers Day. My only minor complaint was that a fairly large dog was allowed to wander around the bar and... More

Thank you for such an excellent review of the Rose and Thistle. It is lovely to hear that you enjoyed your time with us on Mother’s Day. We do usually ask that all dogs are kept on leads whilst there are guests enjoying food in the bar area so I am unsure why this wasn’t the case on the day... More

Delighted to advise that the Rose is still as good as ever but beware the sticky toffee and date pudding. It's terrific but I'm not sure that my arteries appreciated it!

This is a great pub with the most incredible food. Really reasonable pricing with massive portions - we both had the pork belly and couldn't finish it. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and I can't wait to go back! Recommend booking before you go which I did by email and they replied the same day.

Description
The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
