This is a popular pork cutlet set meal restaurant that is always crowded on weekdays and holidays alike. This type of restaurant is usually crowded during lunch time only, but relatively empty during dinner time. But even during dinner time, this restaurant...is very popular and crowded. On the other hand, the turnover of customers is not bad, probably because the overwhelming majority of customers are small groups of one to four people. It takes about 30 minutes at most to enter the restaurant and place an order. However, regardless of how crowded the restaurant is, it still takes a slight time from the time you order until your dish is served. That is because those dishes are carefully prepared pork cutlets. The batter of pork cutlets is golden brown and evenly fried. The meat is cooked thoroughly, yet has the right amount of elasticity, and is not too fatty, so it does not leave an aftertaste and has a relatively light texture. This restaurant consists of two floors, the first and second, and the only way to get up and down to the second floor is by stairs, so people with disabilities such as wheelchairs will have to use the seats on the first floor. The stairs to the second floor are wide enough for people to pass each other, but you may find them narrow. English menus are also available, as the restaurant is frequented by overseas tourists.More

We came here around 45 minutes before it was opened. It was on a weekend. We were 12th in line. It was worth the wait. I ordered the fried shrimp set while my sister ordered the tonkatsu set. We split it in half because we...wanted a part of each. They were both so light and flaky. It was so delicious. It was so worth the wait. Service was excellent. We had a great time and definitely enjoyed our time here.More

Really good, but be prepared to wait for quite some time because of the queue! We went early, just before the restaurant opened and there was already a long queue, about half were tourists. They take about 20 mins to prepare the meal too.

This would have been difficult to find, as it was tucked back on a side street, had there not been a line outside. It was around 7pm and we ended up waiting about 45 minutes. Tried both the chicken and pork katsu and both were...amazing. The people, who I think are the owners, were extremely attentive. Right as I was just finishing my salad, the lady comes over to me with a bowl of more salad and asks if I wanted more. As with both Japanese establishments, there was limited seating, so larger parties are hard to accommodate. As another plus, they had an English menu! Would highly recommend if you are in Akihabara.More

I had planned to visit another tonkatsu restaurant - Narikura - on this trip as many had claimed it has the best tonkatsu - until I found out that it moved further outside Tokyo just a few days back. Thus I decided to pay a...visit to Tonkatsu Marugo instead. Incidentally, this is also on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Queues already formed at 11ish (restaurant opens at 1130). Anyway, guests were quickly seated but I had to wait 10-15 min further as they were preparing to seat a party of 5 just in front of me (although when I went in, there were 3 empty counter seats). I guess they really respect the first come first served rule. I ordered the special rosu katsu with rice set. I've always wondered about the hire vs rosu argument - I always like a bit of fat and love the rosu cut. The majority seems to think that hire is better? Thus, the special hire costs 2100 yen and special rosu costs 1850 yen. Rice set with soup and appetiser costs an additional 450. When the food came, I thought it was a very good cut, it was nearly half lean meat and half slightly fatter cut. Together with the crunchy (but not hard) bread crumbs, the taste was certainly better than average tonkatsu. The tonkatsu sauce that you can help yourself to is good too and complements the meat really well (and I don't say this often as I feel that most of the sauces I've tasted are sourish and overpower the meat taste, which shouldn't be). I realised, to have the opportunity to sit in a good well-run establishment where the chefs prepare your food in front of you - and this is top grade food that you don't get everyday - really it's a privilege. Plus, the price is reasonable - I actually don't consider this expensive if you compare it to other chain outlets like Wako etc where they are almost the same prices (p.s. the original place I wanted to go to would cost double: now that's expensive and hopefully the taste is heavenly to justify the price). All in all, I would give this 4.5 stars... just does not hit the 5 for me. But it's a good place, worth the queue - come for the special hire or rosu, I hear even the prawns are good too (and huge, like bananas 😂).More

I do not think you can book a table, so prepare yourself to wait - it is easy to locate the restaurant - just look for the line!:) It is really worth the wait. Most of tables are on the first floor, downstairs you can...sit at the bar. The employees are very nice to children, and the food is tasty and crusty. Portions are descent, and we had a lovely dinner.More

I ate here not long ago and so far on my trip they have the best tempura prawns and amazing rice as well. The staff is also very kind, energetic and positive. There is a line outside of the restaurant that can vary in the...time you would be waiting. As I waited for 30 minutes because I came at a popular time which didn’t bother me much.More

I cannot recommend Tonkatsu Marugo enough. Tucked away in a corner in Akihabara, it is a traditional Japanese restaurant (very small and cozy inside) which serves the most delicious tonkatsu at reasonable prices. All three members of my family chose to have the pork cutlet,...which was absolutely delectable! The pork was so tender, it literally melted in our mouths! We also had the shrimp tempura, which was, hands down, the BEST tempura we have ever had. Lightly battered and crispy, the shrimp beneath the coating was succulent and fresh. Please note that each dish is prepared from scratch; so expect to wait for at least 15 minutes before your order is served. We took our place in the queue outside the restaurant at 4:45 and were immediately seated as soon as it opened. Make sure to stop here and enjoy the tonkatsu - it will be worth the wait and money!More

It's only fitting to have eaten the best tonkatsu in Japan, or anything Japanese for that matter. Featured in Tokyo's Michelin Guide 2016, Takayoshi Takeuchi's mastery of the "low temperature frying" technique has garnered quite the followers Marugo has to date, both locals and tourists....Now, don't let the line outside deter you because I promise you the wait is worthwhile. I say go with the Set Menu, that's what we did. It includes a bowl of rice, red miso soup, and pickles. And if you want a second bowl of rice or extra cabbage, just say - "Okawari kudasai!" TONKATSU (¥2,100) -- I got the pork medallions vs. the pork loin cutlet as I wanted the convenience of eating each piece dipped in different sauces (tonkatsu sauce, no sauce, or just a squirt of lemon and some salt). If you ask what I prefer, it's hard to pick. I enjoyed them all individually because the fact of the matter is, the tonkatsu itself is golden - literally! The breading was outstanding while the meat inside was marvelously melt-in-your-mouth good. It's unreal! Anyway you eat it, the taste remains superb. Their house tonkatsu sauce deserves a shout out. I love how it's so well-balanced with the tartness and sweetness that it doesn't mask the beautiful pork, if anything, it elevates it in new heights. The red miso soup is rather unique with a bolder and heartier taste profile compared to what we're accustomed to. I dig it, a lot! As for the cabbage, it just works in this meal, period. Knock yourself out with the orange colored dressing on the table. Heck, even the rice is a mastery. Okawari Kudasai, for sure! CHICKEN-KATSU (¥1,450) -- I try to avoid poultry if I can being both a carnivore and a seafood aficionado. After having a piece of the breaded white meat, I gave myself a second to stop and enjoy the moment of pure bliss. Did they just kill a chicken at the back and fry it? It's tender, juicy, and nothing like the chicken here in the States. If there's such thing as an A5 Miyazaki chicken, this would be it. Like anywhere in Japan, customer service is beyond amazing whether you are in a McDonald's or a fine dining establishment. And the craziest part? There's no tipping! I'm blown away that up to this day, I'm still reminiscing about the heavenly meal I had here.More
