A trip a year ago - we were highly recommended to go! It was 10/10, however we went back expecting a great meal - a little disappointed in the quality of tempura - tasted oil more than fish! We will not be back - sorry! Also was half empty? Last year was fully booked!

We found this place through TripAdvisor and we probably should have studied the menu closer before we went inside. This is one of those Japanese restaurants that is a bit more "advanced" than we were ready for. We ordered the standard tempura set. First of all, they brought a number of bowls filled with various sauces, and I guess we... More

It's not a tourist trap, plenty of locals having delicious and reasonably priced tempura. Don't be discouraged by the lines - the service is efficient and the line moves quickly. And go for the more expensive menu sets, they are worth the extra US$10. You won't regret it!

Every trip to Tokyo needs to include a tempura restaurant, and truly there is no bette than this one. It is a real traditional experience and one you have to wait for! The queues are always quite large, but certainly worth the wait. The menu is fab, you get to choose a selection you can sit and watch the chefs... More

I was on my way back to Tokyo and googled and found this place to visit. As soon as I got there, there was a small queue that was quickly looked after. After ordering, it came with a selection of different tempura. What sets this place apart is the ingredients and the different ways you can eat it. This is... More

We don't have to queue for our early lunch here. Patrons are mainly locals that day. Seated at the counter with the chef preparing the food right in front of you. Ordered Tempura Zen and Nagisa sets on the English menu. It is not served at one go and you can enjoy it crisp and hot. We particularly like the... More

The tempura was alright. Sat at the counter and was able to observe the chef cutting, dipping and cooking. Nothing to shout about.

We didn't wait long for seats at 6 pm. We were lucky to sit at the counter in front of the chef. We enjoyed watching the elderly chef expertly preparing the fresh seafood into tempura. He speaks only a few words in English but he was joyfully showing us how to eat the tempura with the condiments prepared in front... More

Great place if you are looking for tempura. The vegetables and prawns are really great. It comes with salt or tempura dipping sauce which really makes it amazing. It's very tourist friendly and not much of a wait as it does not require a reservation. I will say the eel and the shrimp cluster at the end were a bit... More

My habit of ordering food is to watch whether the outlet is frequented by the locals. This outlet has locals queuing. So I joined the queue. At first glance, the sets may look expensive but it is justified as the portion is large and freshly made (the tempura comes in two batches, the waitress will observe the speed of your... More

Staying in Shinjuku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.
