This is a very traditional restaurant, seating mats, no shoes, hibachi burner, small menu with only a few selections. If you love Dozeu (small bony fish) you will love the restaurant, if you hate cigarette smoking Japanese men you probably won't enjoy this experience. My wife and I enjoyed it for the history (since 1801 in the same location), the... More

Although this meal is very 'old' it was certainly new to me & such a treat! Our amazing host introduced us to this place on my first trip to Japan - loved it & we will certainly come back in 2017!

This is a lovely little traditional Japanese restaurant. If you enjoy fish, and are open to trying local, do stop by. It is a very limited menu though, and the focus is fish.

Dozeu is a lovely place for lunch if you passed by Asuka area. Its lunch menu is cheaper than the a la carte in dinner time. You may want to visit there for an early lunch because it can be crowded after 12. There are two area of this restaurant. The ground floor is tatami and the basement is table... More

渋谷のお店にはちょくちょくいくのですが、本店は今回初めて伺いました。 趣のある店内。情緒があってタイムスリップした感があります。 You might see the good atmosphere from Japanese traditional "Dojyou" Cuisine.

Its like no other experience. The fish was braised with sake creating superb flavour. The building was in its traditional form as well. Totally recommend!!

Firstly, amazing food. If you want to experience authentic Japanese cuisine, this is the place. Unfortunately our feast was cut abruptly short by the impatient staff signalling that they were closing and we needed to get out. It was 9.15. We'd been there barely 40 minutes. After being frogmarched to the till to pay our ¥11,000 (£80) bill not long... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
