This place was fun and the food was great. We enjoyed sitting on the floor and cooking our meal. You do take your shoes off when entering and place them in a bag. We got there when they opened and were shown immediately to a table. The staff was friendly and helpful. Women's toilet is a hole in the floor.

If you are in the area visiting the Sensoji temple, this restaurant is a must visit if you want a traditional japanese dining experience!! Be prepared to wait in line to get a set, and when you do, be prepared to sit on the floor! Most staff speak English and will guide you through what needs to be done for... More

Friendly staff spoke English and helped us through the process of making our okonomiyaki. A very good choice of ingredients.

Placed in downtown Asakusa, this beautiful restaurant triggered my imagination like very few places can. Everything was delicious, the service was great, and the atmosphere that wooden joint has to offer is second to none. Making a reservation is a must for dinner otherwise you'll have to wait for a considerable amount of time.

A very traditional Japanese restaurant that was packed out with locals when we finally managed to arrive. Somehow when we first got to this place our Google Maps directed us to the back door and both ourselves and the staff were pretty confused when we came in this way. Once we got around to the front we had to wait... More

A picturesque old style restaurant in Asakusa. The staff was friendly and helped us bake a nice okonomiyaki by ourselves. You will find more locals and less tourists in the place which is a plus if you want to see genuine restuarants which are not touristic.

This restaurant has a very high rating on Tripadvisor, so I checked it out. - It is very popular among locals, sign of a good restaurant and Japanese Cuisine - Expect a queue that goes out the door (In winter, bring more clothes. My wait time was approx 90mins, around 8pm) - Book ahead and make a reservation if possible... More

Good restaurant - not sure that it deserves so many high ratings. My wife and I enjoyed a dinner here. It's a nice little restaurant, attentive staff and good food. Oysters were particularly nice. Only problem for anglos is that you have to sit on the floor. Some like me might find it a bit hard on the legs. Great... More

Our first trip to Japan. Spent the day touring Asakusa and saw this online. Nice welcoming, gracious atmosphere. The food was excellent. You cook at your table and we needed help with that which was not a problem. It felt very authentic and we had a lot of fun. Our server had visited the US and we had a nice... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
