These days a proper village pub that hasn't been 'modernised' or turned into 'retaurant' is a rare thing. The Hawkins Arms is one of the exceptions, good fresh St Austell Ales beer on tap. Friendly chat from locals and from front of house (who took...special care of one customer who needed assistance). The other welcome surprise was food on a Monday. We went for the burger which was really very good. Home made cole slaw, home made onion rings, good texture to the burger and lovely chips - what's not to like! All good value too. Why only 4* and not 5*? - only because in a St Austell Pub I like to find their premium Hicks' Ale.More

Lovely staff, very friendly. We were expecting food to be as shown on the website, however the menu was extremely basic and the food was very average ‘pub grub’.

We were meeting friends @ Trewithen Gardens where we found the tea room to currently be closed when we arrived . A local suggested we try this pub in Probus , which is how we came to be there . The bar lady had little...to offer , as she was unprepared for us , but was so welcoming that we spent a pleasant hour or more in her company , and enjoying the lunch she was able to provide . If you are ever in Probus , then visit this friendly pub .More

So glad we visited, is a lovely place for drinks or dinner. Large garden for kids to run in and a cosy indoors. We were made to feel welcomed, considering we had a 1yr, 4yr and 5yr old we were still made to feel at...home. Thank you!More

I was visiting my mum and sister with my two sons and decided to eat at the Hawkins as it is their local. On first entering the pub, it had a nice feel, it was busy and atmospheric, a good start we thought. Things soon...went wrong as our food order was nowhere to be seen after 45 minutes. None of the staff had said anything so we asked what was happening. We were told they were very busy and it would come soon. One hour later, no food arrived but a bowl of chips whilst we waited; with no explanation. 15 minutes after this, we asked when our food would arrive, now quite frustrated and hungry. After another 15 minutes our food finally arrived, with no apology from the manager who delivered the food himself and who was aware of the situation. The food was terrible quality, we were so disappointed. The pizzas my sons ate had so much cheese they were fatty and tasteless; the ploughmans we ate was very poor; a small bit of salad, huge chunks of cheese, a half baked baguette. We couldn’t wait to leave. It ruined our night, mostly the ill mannered staff who obviously didn’t care whether we had a good experience or not. Disappointing. We won’t go back or recommend it.More

The pub interior is very nice and the garden bar at the back also has a good party vibe. Staff friendly and helpful. But the words gastro and pub have not been associated with this establishment I think. The menu lacked any imagination. Luckily the...pizza was off reading the reviews here that was good luck. The food was very, very average, fish chips consisted of not great quality fish only partly cooked and ok chips. You’d think you’d get good fish in Cornwall. The cost of a Tarquin’s G&T £9 I think?? these are hotel prices if it was! There’s a lot right with this pub in a lovely Cornish village but good pub food and reasonable Gin prices would help make it a place you’d want to return to.More

We arrived to Cornwall yesterday and came across this lovely pub and the amazing garden!! Due to Covid cases rising in the village they have kept indoors shut but our two children loved it the pizzas were amazing very filling if you don’t like a...lot of toppings make sure you ask for a smaller variety but we loved the amount they came with and the burgers was just right for a small village pub grub!More

Possibly the worst food we’ve ever had. Pizzas are nothing like the pictures - the website does a good sell but clearly stock photos or a time in the past. Vegetable pizza had a thick layer of waxy cheap cheese covered in a layer of...frozen peas, carrots and sweet corn. Nothing fresh about it and completely inedible. Meat pizza looked toxic and the sweet pizza was also drowned in nasty cheese, onions were not caramelised and if there was any goat cheese it was undetectable. Chips were tasteless and mushy. All in all, cannot recommend it at all. Nice friendly staff, decent beer garden but the food is seriously mis-sold on their website and we’d have gone elsewhere if they’d used realistic descriptions of their food.More

Felt very unwelcome. Landlady was very off and quite rude and abrupt, staff not much better. As for the pizza - totally average. Food was served in a take-away box which we took advantage of and went. No great if you dont like pizza either,...however you could have had some chips.More

A lovely place to stay if you are on your way to and from Lands End. The owners are very helpful and of course the pub side serves dinner and breakfast. Our bedroom was quite small but had everything you need for a night’s stay....The bathroom was very small with a shower, sink and toilet. Everywhere was spotless. Ample parking.More
