Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Love the wherry usually but found the roast potatoes a little hard in the middle. Rest of meal was perfect, never had this problem before & we often dine here. Love the views from the wherry, it's worth a trip there.

Stopped in for food after a busy family day out, found they were running a 20% discount on carvery. Decided we would all eat from carvery and it was great, plentiful, fresh vegetables all hot. Tender meat and generous portions given. All staff we encountered...were genuinely happy people and gave great service. Much better rates than the Toby Carvery locally. *****More

Took a while to order our food due to insufficient staff behind bar. Not the fault of the staff obviously. Tried to order fish and chips but told no fish available. Lowestoft was a fishing town? Decided on scampi and chips instead, friends had similar...I had the 16ox steak (2) steaks. Food finally arrived after quite a while as they were busy. Waitress just stood at table a loudly said “scampi” and virtually dropped the plate in front of my friend. So rude and a similar way of serving to the rest of us. Coupled with the scampi consisting of only SEVEN pieces we will not be returning too soon. Peas were very dry and unappetising with a meagre portion of chips. Noticed the Carvery was not topped up at all while we were there and the whole counter looked abandoned with meats uncovered and empty trays. Worst experience there for a long while, hope it’s only temporary!More

Went for breakfast with a walking group - 12 of us. I had enquired to check if a vegan breakfast was available and was told it was. I asked for a non-dairy spread for the toast - I was asked what was that? Checked with...the kitchen - sorry but we only do butter! No dairy alternative for other items either - yoghurt for example. I am sorry - but this is 2024. There is a climate emergency. We need to be cutting back on animal based food. Come on - surely you can do better?More

Went there for a family meal we normally have the carvery which is always good. We decided to order from the menu as we were having a roast dinner the next day. My husband ordered a half roast chicken when it came out it was...anaemic obviously not roasted, it was cooked inside but didn’t look attractive at all and was just warm. I’ve been to the Wherry with family and friends for many years as I live local to it and love the views of the park and broads. Such a shame it’s gone downhill past few years. Myself and my partner have had no choice to...complain on the last few occasions we had a carvery here ….cold veg and meat, no roast potatoes, standing waiting ages for certain roast veg to be brought out as they run out a lot . Burnt or undercooked veg and Yorkshire puddings. They run out of gravy too and sauces. It says “Generous Portions” but all you get now is two tiny pieces of meat and that can be just gristle and fat! Overpriced food for what you get! Overpriced drinks ….for example , asked for a red wine spritzer , was a tiny drizzle of red wine and rest was lemonade ….£9!!!!! Management need changing and staff need cheering up as I’m guessing they’re underpaid and don’t appear to enjoy working there. I’ve heard from people I know that their rooms are in bad need of refurbishment as very outdated , dirty and cold . Get your act together Wherry!! I’m taking my hard earned money elsewhere from now on……Toby Carvery, Gorleston, here I come , excellent food , very good prices and cheerful, helpful staff.More

We went with a large group of people (about 50) for a Christmas dinner. All the tables were beautifully laid with crackers, etc. and polished cutlery. It was a pre-chosen, three course dinner and nobody had anything to complain about. There were slight delays at...the bar when we first arrived, as there was only one person serving. The venue is wheelchair accessible - our group had four or five wheelchair users including me. There are ramps and wide doorways around the back of the building. I didn't use the accessible toilet myself, but I think it must have been alright.More

My Carvery lunch was actually inedible. This was very disappointing as we have eaten here before and enjoyed my food. My Beef was rubbery and almost impossible to cut. The yorkshire pudding was cold the parsnips were impossible to cut and burt. The carrots were...also cold, as was the gravey. I have scored this meal a two becausecthe strawberry Cheesecake, could not be ruined as it was brought in frozen and defrosted. I spoke to the Waiter who gave me a doggy box form carvery as it was only suitable as dog food. The Manager was apologic and offered us a complimentary drink which I refused. I just wanted to leave by then. Just all very disappointing 😞.More

I originally booked this hotel through booking.com. A week before my visit, I received a phone call from the hotel giving me the option to cancel with booking.com and book direct with the hotel to receive a free upgrade. I cancelled with booking.com and then...received a new booking confirmation from The Wherry for more than I originally paid. Contacting the hotel I pointed this out and was told it was an error. I then pointed out that Booking.com was now showing the room with a discount. The hotel said they would price match but we couldn’t have an upgrade. When we arrived I pointed out that we was not getting any benefit now so the man at reception booked us into a better room. I say better, but the bathroom had so much mould around the bath and shower, it was disgusting. I wanted to have a bath but found the plug did not fit the bath so the water ran away. Next day we returned from work to find the key card didn’t work. I went to reception and was told this was an error by a new member of staff. I was actually booked in by a senior member of staff so this was untrue. Whilst at reception I took the opportunity to advise them about the mould and plug. The lady took note and also advised me that it was herself I’d spoken to the previous week and we shouldn’t be in the upgraded room. We were also booked in to return the following weekend and was advised we would not be getting a free upgrade, even though we’d booked direct again. Overall I feel the hotel rooms are very dated and could do with a good clean. Unlike any other hotel I’ve stayed in, if you want the room made up whilst there, you have to hang a sign on the door, otherwise it is left uncleaned. We did eat at the hotel. The roast was good and the other food was average. We have a further 8 jobs booked for Lowestoft during next year but because of the way we have been treated, our business will be taken elsewhere.More

Awful. Got a room with disabled access for my wife. Dropped stuff off quickly and went for dinner. Noticed odd smell and a plug in air freshener in the room. Came back after dinner, opened bathroom door and the smell of stagnant water was disgusting....Air freshener was not covering the smell. Granted, was moved to another room but, even so, there's no way that room should have been used. Second room did NOT have an air freshener telling me it was put in the first room to deliberately cover the smell. Carpets in second room dirty, nasty piece of sharp plastic on bathroom floor, bed damaged also. Personally, not worried about second room but the first room should NOT have been in use. Air freshener clearly put in the room to cover the smell. My wife has an open wound on her leg and is susceptible to infection - do you have any idea what diseases stagnant water carries? After speaking to the manager, they did NOTHING. Nothing at all. Will NEVER stay there again. Ever. How any establishment could sell a room in that state is beyond me. Disgusting.More

We travel a lot and stay at hotels all over the U.K and we like to give an honest and fair review of each, based on all the various places we stay to give a background standard and to offer helpful info to other travellers....The Wherry is in a very good location right at the bottom of the Broads. I imagine in summer, sitting outside looking out over the water would be excellent, but the day we visited it was raining😗. There are several restaurant areas and a couple of bars. The bar staff were very helpful, prices reasonable and plenty of parking. Our food (chicken melt) was tasty and decent portions. £32:40 for the chicken melt and soup of the day x 2 Wine (Pinot Grigio) £18:45 per bottle (less than many places). Reception was friendly and efficient. The room (Kings Suite) room 210 is huge and very comfy. A little road noise at night and some very annoying lights from a nearby rail crossing made it not perfect unfortunately. Breakfast was OK but the kitchen was having issues and a buffet rather than being able to order from the breakfast menu. Disappointing, but there you go. The service was efficient but no smile. Overall a good place to stay if you are visiting Lowestoft or the Broads. £140 for the night with breakfast for two.More

We have been regular family patrons of the Wherry restaurant for a number of years, but had a bad experience recently when my partner requested dessert allergen information. The barman took ten minutes to return with dangerous non-specific information and a rude attitude, which obviously...had filtered through to the waitress who was abrupt when serving us. Rather than giving a bad review, in view of the years of satisfied service, I sent an email to the restaurant manager. In it, I praised his food, and pointed out our regular patronage, giving him the chance to respond, with an explanation of why his restaurant was not complying with the law regarding allergens, and maybe an apology. Eight days have now passed and no communication has been received. Either business is so good that they mistakenly believe that others will be along to take the place of 'awkward customers'.( Believe me, with 30 years of Sales/Marketing Management experience, that is a very dangerous path to tread.) Or perhaps the Wherry's new arrogant attitude is, 'If you don't like it you know what........'More
