This is one of the oldest buildings in Rottingdean and therefore the entire of Brighton and Hove, making it a public house of distinction. Sadly, the decor does not respect its age and heritage. A major practical fault with the place is that there are...FAR too many tables squashed uncomfortably into a very small dining area. Sitting so close together means you have to strain to hear your own party speaking, and mixed with loud music (1970s/80s Christmas pop music), this creates a very loud hubbub that is not conducive either to conversation or digestion. Despite every table in the small, very crowded dining area being full, the room at the back was not open. It rarely is. I don't see why on earth it wouldn't be, as it would give everyone some elbow room, reduce the noise, and give diners space to push their chairs back and waiters room to get about.
The waiting staff are pleasant. Our party had the beef (good) and fish and chips (not good - seemed to have been double friend, and was greasy). Having read John's replies to negative comments - his graceless defence (John, have you heard the truism 'the customer is always right'?) being 'look at all the positive reviews' - I do not expect this establishment to address any of its issues. Hey ho. Ho ho.More
