The Eagle & Child have REALLY risen to the current challenge and are producing and delivering delicious ready meals for customers. We’ve had several already and love them.
You can choose from collection or delivery to your door (our preference.)
They have delivered promptly and courteously to us every time.
So far, we've had the fish pie, all the other pies (!) their soups and the Mediterranean Lasagna.
The food is totally restaurant quality but at a price that you couldn’t cook cheaper yourself.
One warning about the pies – they’re so good your waistline is doomed!
Thank you Glen and you’re lovely staff, please keep up the sterling work. x

We visited for a birthday meal with family. We were welcomed by a very pleasant young lady and the one way system for social distancing was explained clearly. Lots of hand sanitiser and covid information available and the restaurant is clearly taking responsibility for ensuring guest safety, which was reassuring, particularly in light of our elderly birthday girl! We had a table in the light and airy conservatory, overlooking Holcome Hill.
We thoroughly enjoyed our food, which was fresh, tasty and hot. The haddock goujons were fantastic and the homemade soup was delicious. Our freshly baked cheese and onion pies were full of filling with delicious pastry and served with a small but sufficient portion of chips and some very nice home made brown sauce. Great value for money. My only little gripe was the size of the sides, which were disproportionately small for the size of the meal. I would have been happy to pay £3 for a decent portion of mushy peas, but felt that a dessert spoon full didn't warrant the cost. Perhaps these could be included if they are served in such small quantities, or increase the portion size where they are purchased as extras.
We were unfortunately too full for pudding, but asked for the 5 desert plate as a take away treat for the birthday girl. Staff were happy to oblige and brought this out to us packaged in a lovely box. We enjoyed hot coffee which was also very nice.
We caught the last day of the Eat out to help out scheme, which reduced the bill by £50, so at just over £20 per head including 2 drinks each, the value was excellent.
All the staff were friendly, professional and helpful. Thank you to the whole team.
We really enjoyed our visit and will definitely come again.

Had Sunday lunch with my delightful girlfriend as our first meal out together.
Excellent food hot and tasty possibly portion size could be bigger but I am a big chap so take a lot of filling.
Waiter and waitresses were good and polite with the young waitress to me looking like a star in the making she was so bubbly and smiley I hope she goes far in the future.
We would be more than happy to return here again in the future coming from Leeds but hopefully no storms to dampen our journey.

Visited with 5 others for a birthday meal and on the whole we enjoyed the evening.
There are few area for improvement firstly the speed of service was a little slow, not painfully slow but I think it should have been quicker. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant was full so I guess the kitchen just had a lot on. The other area which I was a bit disappointed with was the cooking of my steak. I ordered medium rare and it definitely was but the outside of steak really lacked a good sear so it really reduced the flavour. The steak itself is dry aged and seemed to be good quality so that saved it but had the sear been right it could have been a really good meal. As it was I didn’t think it was anything to shout about & when you’re paying £25 for a steak you expect it to be good.
The food was really well presented but that shouldn’t be expense of the taste.
The smoked salmon starter was really enjoyable. It came with lime, tonic gel & dill mayo which worked very well and made it a little different from a normal smoked salmon starter.
The staff were very friendly and it’s a nice setting which made for a very good atmosphere for a celebration. I would go back but I think there are probably other options close by that I’d pick first.

After hearing great things about this pub, we went for a bit of a treat as a group of six. Looking at the menu, I ordered steak and ale pie with chips and seasonal greens. After waiting over 30 mins (plus 10 minutes after they said they were plating our food), my meal arrived with mushy peas. I mentioned that the menu said 'seasonal greens' but was met with - 'oh the menu has changed, you must have got an old menu'.
Understandable. But when I asked the waitress if I could have them she said yes but at a cost of £4! Since the cost of the original meal was £16, I wasn't about to pay £4 for a few bits of brocolli and a few green beans.
I later showed the waitress the menu with 'seasonal greens' on it and she only said 'yes, we must change this...'
Also waited 10 minutes for a diet coke which arrived as full fat coke. Not ideal.
Honestly shocked at how poor the service was. Spending £120 on a meal with such poor service is an experience I'm not going to repeat again at the Eagle and Child.

How truly awful Karen, it really does read as the most horrific customer service imaginable!
I'm sure you were never a young person in training...?
I'll let her know that it is ALWAYS a Diet Coke with steak pie and chips.
I also note that you forgot to mention that the government subsidised your meal by 50%...
I'm rather thankful that you'll avoid us in future.
Best wishes

I am local to the Eagle and Child and have eaten their regularly, so in this current difficult climate my partner and I thought that it would great to support a local company and order from the Eagle and child for a takeaway meal on Saturday 4th April. We ordered a 3 nibble portions; breaded halloumi, spiced goosnargh chicken bites and Moroccan meatballs. Then we ordered the steak and ale pie and the cheese and onion pie finishing with the carrot cake with Seville orange mascarpone.
I arrived to pick this up and the dessert was placed in the bag along with all the other hot food. I promptly removed this so that the dessert was not ruined.
When we returned home we realised they had missed off the chicken bites off the order. The other two nibbles were fine.
Then we started our pies for our main meal. We were unable to remove the pies from their tins. The steak pie only had three pieces of meat inside. The cheese pie was very flat, and tasted nothing like the usual pie, which we have had on many occasions. When I have eaten the award winning cheese pie in restaurant I have struggled to finish it, and this was not the case
Finally we ate out dessert which was very average, and the Seville orange mascarpone was most definitely plain mascarpone.
After our meal I rang the Eagle and Child to inform them or our disappointment, the supervisor informed me that the manager was out and I would get a phone call back that evening; I did not receive any such phone call.
I rang back at 12:15 on Sunday 5th April and asked to speak to the manager, who offered me a voucher. When I stated that I would like a refund as I was so disappointed the manager went on to say that I had no proof so I could not have this. The manager was extremely rude and said that we should just not visit again if that was the way I felt. He then went on to hang up on me.
I feel very passionately about supporting local businesses. This meal was £42 and it was utterly disappointing as was the attitude of the manager.

The last time my family ate Sunday lunch at the Eagle and Child was in 2016, the year the pub received the top accolade from The Skills for Business Awards 2016. The Sunday lunch was ,in my opinion, one of the best I had eaten in a pub for a very long time . The whole experience was memorable for all the good reasons.
Sadly, the same can not be said about today's Sunday lunch experience. The table for 6 adults and 2 young children for 1.00pm. My Lancashire born wife was pleased to see Cheese and Onion pie on the specials board. Five of the group decided to chose the same. Big mistake. The pie consisted of a domed thick pastry crust surrounded by a roll of even thicker pastry, inside was a potion of mashed cheese and onion filling mixed with mustard Granted the description on the specials board did say 'flavoured with lots of mustard' Sadly the mustard flavour was far too strong it completely overpowered the cheese and onion. Chips were served along side. No vegetables. When asked ,after the meal, why no veg the reply was :- Yes you could have had some veg at £3.95 a portion per vegetable. Not good. I will not be returning. Very small car park and slow service.

Check out my review in April when i was very positive about the Eagle and Child. Not so this time.
We have had several take away meals during this exceptional period but our favourite was the Sunday Roast.
Its about a third more expensive than others but it came with three meats, beef, chicken and Gammon.
Not so now. When we got it home, just beef, so we phoned up and were told "...because the restaurant was now open they were only doing one meat and we should have been told". Obviously we weren't. Its a bit of let down to be told that those who supported them during lockdown are now secondary!.
The beef was rather strange tasting and looked pale and unappetising. The gravy - you have to pay £2 more for an extra portion - was exceptionally salty.
Not a good experience and we will wait for better reviews until we return.

Visited as part of the Eat Out scheme with a £10 table reservation paid upfront (fine and support this). Ultimately it is about the food and my partner chose the classic cheese pie she really liked.
I chose the seafood risotto and sticky toffee pudding. Risotto was 'okay' with the 1 and a half prawns being hard and squid rubbery, not a great choice. A gastro pub has to nail a stick toffee pudding but this was hard and not a great eat.
Glad of the government discount, would have been expensive for the quality otherwise. Also they forgot to take off the £10 table deposit too, come on guys get it right! If there are underperforming items on the menu take them off.

Hi Phil
Thanks for your feedback.
We were rather overwhelmed, as many establishments were at the start of EOTHO as we had unprecedented demand after a period of closure.
Apologies that we did not meet your expectations on your visit.
Regards
Glen

We had heard a lot of good things about this bistro pub. Friends had recommended it. However our experience will not make us hurry back. The service was patchy. 2 groups came in after us and received their food. It was only after I asked a waiter where our food was we were told 5 minutes. Drink service was poor as well. When the food arrived it was a mixed bag. My roast beef and my wife’s fish cakes were perfect. The vegetable accompanying the main foods were over cooked. The Yorkshire’s and the roast potatoes in particular were dry and had clearly been left under a hot lamp too long. In saying this, the Knickerbocker Glory was fabulous and the manager did reduce our bill and listened attentively to our criticisms. There are a lot of great restaurants in this part of Lancashire, many receiving national plaudits. Unfortunately for the Eagle and Child we won’t be back in a hurry, which is shame because it’s a lovely pub and the staff were friendly, but that’s no good without the service and food being right!

Had the most delicious Sunday roast delivered today - perfect roasties, mash, carrots and red cabbage with lashings of fantastic gravy, a Yorkshire pudding and a choice of meat. Brought hot to the door. Amazing service and value - have already booked for Easter Sunday. Their complete meals with wine look good too.

After reading reviews and hearing good things about the place, we booked for a special family and friends meal. It was Monday so fairly quiet. The pub itself is lovely and very welcoming and we were seated in the new area with the most beautiful view with the sun shining! We ordered two bottles of Prosecco whilst looking at the menu. Sadly it was not a true Prosecco but a Frizzante and was warm. The menu seemed uninspiring, even bland but we made our choices only to be told that some were not available! The steak eaters all said they were delishious and cooked well. I couldn't eat the cheese bomb, a strange pureed texture, and the chips were frozen. Also the tapas starters were so small for the price. It's a great place with a nice atmosphere, just let down by the food. Do a proper homemade chip, a thick doorstop cheese and onion pie and make the menu stand out with seasonal and local produce. We enjoyed our evening though!

Hi Mortica
Thanks for your review.
There are a number of clear errors and I wonder if you've reviewed the wrong Eagle and Child.
We only serve authentic prosecco and have a large and varied menu which is far from uninspiring!
We don't serve frozen chips and we use produce from our garden, which is home grown!
Please check you have reviewed the right place.
Thanks
Glen

Visited for lunch for wife's birthday. Place was completely empty other than ourselves and 2 young men, one of whom was behind the bar and the other serving/sweeping up. Whilst waiting for food I ordered a pint of Estrella and a tonic water. The pint was brought to our table and looked more like a Drs sample. It was very cloudy and looked more like fizzy orange juice, also tasted off. I gave it back, pointing out its appearance and taste and the chap took it back to the barman. He held it up, looked at it, tasted it, and declared in a very loud voice "tastes alright to me" He then proceeded to send another one to me which had the exact same appearance ! I refused it on the same grounds as the first one and the barman looked more than a little peeved. I said I did not want Estrella as it was clearly off and I settled for Birra Morette, which was fine.
The food was brought by the same guy who had just finished sweeping and he looked about as interested in us and our food, as he did in his sweeping (cheese pie + chips and steak pie + chips)
The cheese pie, which was described in the menu as a cheese bomber if I recall, was disgusting, my wife could not eat it so we paid the £42 bill, YES £42 !!! and left.
Safe to say we will not be going back any time soon !!!

Our daughter just moved to Rossendale and suggested dinner at the Eagle and Child. What a revelation!
I had the steak and ale pot pie which was the absolute best pie I have had anywhere in the World and I have spent my life travelling the World on business. The meat was so tender and the pastry feather light with such a beautiful gravy I asked for a spoon as did not want to waste any! My wife had the cheese and onion pie which she pronounced as one of the nicest things she has ever eaten. The chips accompanying both both were superlative and the mixed veg i had with my pie were cooked to perfection. I must give praise as well to the waiting staff who were so polite, efficient and made you believe they really are that you enjoy the evening.
We can’t wait to go back and try the Sunday roast which have heard good reports about from our daughter.
It sure was worth travelling over 200 miles to have such great food in a welcoming and warm atmosphere.

We went here for Father’s Day yesterday as a family, the starters and main courses were delicious, but the end of our meal was ruined slightly.
We were asked if we’d like dessert, to which we said yes. The menus were given to us, but then 20 minutes went by and we hadn’t had our order taken. We then asked if we could order to which we were handed the bill and told we couldn’t have dessert as the table was needed back in 10 minutes. We were given the option to eat at the bar where people were drinking which we didn’t think was appropriate.
It was a frustrating end to our meal as it had been so lovely - we think we should have been made aware when the dessert menus were handed to us that they needed the table back at a certain time, but also the staff should have been more proactive to come and take our order.
