We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor and decided it was worth a shot whle staying close by in Shibu Onsen - so glad we did we had a great night - food was excellent, the ambience is fantastic with Sumo posters everywhere - apparently the chef was once trained by a famous Sumo. We ate Chanko Nabe like many... More

Cracking night at this husband and wife run restaurant which we understood was called "Chanko Ryori Tamaya". About 16 hungry Exodus Tourist descended upon this place, the chef was cranked up in the kitchen, meanwhile the wife was waiting on us and the various other patrons. Chef smoked his way through the cooking....but, rest assured this was great food. I... More

This is a cute little place near the yudanika train station. It is run by a husband and wife pair, the husband is very interested in sumo wrestlers. He serves sumo dishes. We had some great veggie options and the food was very good.

Definitely worth experiencing Tamaya. The chef (who is also the waiter and dishwasher etc...) strongly recommends the house special to everyone which is the soup which sumo wrestlers eat (chanko nabe). It is a pretty healthy and filling meal. There are other things on the menu like chicken wings and yakitori which were good too.

We came here on a Sunday night and there were a couple of other parties in the place, there is an English menu with a nice explanation of the significance of the house special which we had to order seeing as the chef has been cooking it in the restaurant for over 40 years. I'd advise just digging in and... More

Great range of Japanese style pub foods (karaage- fried chicken), (kaki-furai- fried oysters) when in season. Also enjoy the chanko-nabe, just know that chanko-nabe does contain organ meats. Udon noodles, rice, or egg and rice may be added to the dish, and you can order as much as you like (paying for each order of rice, noodles, or other...) You... More

Wow, before I walked into this place, I was so concern about not being able to communicate in Japanese. But thank god...they had an English menu. So my girlfriend and I order a Chicken hotpot, Japanese style fried chicken wing, and chicken skew (yakitori??) to go along with my already half drank beer. Wow....i cannot believe Chicken hotpot can be... More

The prefect end to an eventful day of hiking to the moneys or visiting the hot springs. It's convenient, about a two minute walk from the train station and was a remedy to two different long days. Its traditionally Japanese, you sit on the tatami floor at low tables, but there's also a small bar area. Since chanko nabe is... More

Great atmosphere, tatami seating, fun food. Bit too busy on the night we went, and we were seated in the upstairs section where it was harder to get service. Great place to have a beer after seeing the monkeys and having an onsen. Also, can cater for vegetarians to some degree, which many of the ryokan can't.
