About
The 16th century Fleece Inn has provided a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike. In 2015 it became a Free House and closed for major restoration; the entire ground floor was restored (including modernising the kitchen and toilets) using the best techniques to expose and enhance its original beams and other features. There are two dining rooms; the first is large and airy the second cosier and more casual. There is also a comfortable snug and a bar area with a warm fire during the winter months. Children are well provided for with a special menu, high chairs and toys whilst dogs are welcome save in the large dining room. Upstairs is a large function room with its own bar and available for conferences, parties, weddings, funerals and clubs. All dishes are prepared and cooked on site using local produce and the menu is changed frequently. We cater well for special dietary requirements. There is a large car park at the rear and excellent wheelchair access. Come on in.

The Fleece Inn is often celebrated for its delicious meals and value for money, though occasional inconsistency in portion size and quality has been noted by some diners. Its cosy and welcoming atmosphere, complete with candlelit tables and tasteful decor, adds to the charm that many reviewers appreciate. While opinions on the food vary, with some criticisms regarding portions and preparation, the service at The Fleece Inn garners positive attention for its attentive, friendly, and prompt staff, who are noted for their attention to guests' individual needs.

The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, and the place was very clean (including toilet) despite being very busy. We ordered chicken ciabatta and a coffee each (about £11 each less discount. The chicken portion was large, juicy, tender and had a tasty coating. It was served in a large ciabatta with salad, bowl of coleslaw and a pile of beautifully prepared chunky chips. We were stuffed! All the appropriate virus protection measures were in place and adhered to. Full marks!

Visited whilst staying locally. Prebooked table for lunchtime as it was during the Eat Out scheme and thought it would be busy. When we arrived everything was clearly signed with a blackboard explaining how things would work. We had a lovely large table inside and the dining room was really well spaced out. Waiting staff has visors on which made you feel safe. The menu although small had several things that we both could have chosen. We shared a whitebait starter which was some of the nicest we had had, not greasy, very crispy and a large portion. For mains I had sea bass with pickled cucumber, Tiger prawns (massive!), pea puree and little potatoes. My husband had the duo of pork which came with large chunks of chorizo, patatas bravas, and broccoli. Both dishes were of a really good size, not always the case with a gastropub, served on warm plates, always a plus and incredibly tasty. We couldn't manage a pudding but the bill was exceptional value considering what we had eaten and even more so with the money off. We would certainly return and have already been recommending it!

Called in for coffee and dessert only to be greeted by a snotty female Maitre D who tended to look down her nose at us, although I am not sure why. She would do well to remember that she works in a pub ! I have seen all the responses to bad reviews and it looks as if criticism is not taken well. The dessert was very tasty and well presented but took a long time to arrive and for the portion size it was vastly overpriced. The girl on the drinks bar looked very depressed but the young waitress was very friendly. An old chap called in for a pint and was told it would have to be a very quick one as they were closing at 5.30. This was at 4'40 ! I am sure he would have finished a pint in 50 minutes. Far too pretentious for me. This is an honest review and a personal opinion and I am afraid I will not be losing any sleep over the reply, if any !

Although the menu was limited we felt that the standard of food was of an extremely high standard and the service was good . We didn't feel that there was much to say negatively about the place apart from the traffic that goes by ( not fault of Inn) and spoils the view of the church which is all lit up at night - it is not that bad but you are aware of it at times. We would have definitively returned if we had been staying longer - it was the best meal of our stay and we are very fussy foodies.

Having been unable to get a table for my partners birthday, we called in on the off chance and had a table in the courtyard. The attention to detail to adhere to Covid rules was commendable. Extremely well organised, very clean, did track and trace and social distancing etc . 5*. The food was first rate, along with the service and wine. I commend the friendly manager for his expertise in running a superb pub. We will certainly return on a regular basis as finally found an eatery that truly cares about the safety of its customers and staff and at the same time ensures you have an enjoyable night out. Well done to the whole team.

We visited the Fleece Inn for lunch, we were made to feel rather uncomfortable during the experience by a particular senior staff member. As we had a buggy, we were moved away from the main restaurant to another location which was actually smaller. Unfortunately, during the time we were there some young youths shot a mini toy gun through the restaurant window in which the staff member didn’t fill us with confidence that this wasn’t an isolated incident and reluctantly closed the window in the end. The food was ok in general, bit on the pricey side for pub grub. At the end once we’d paid the bill, whilst waiting for my wife to change my daughter in the toilet, the senior staff member once again commented on us to move outside the restaurant as the buggy was supposedly taking up space in the entrance. This was rather odd as there was a bench specifically to sit down, although there was no one present coming in or out at that time. We declined this offer and made her aware that we’d wait until we were ready to leave. Shame such an attitude was taken by this staff member, poor hospitality, no need to treat customers in this way. Highly unlikely to return in future.

This is a very nice Pub that I have been to several times. If going for a meal it's consistently good and has a nice atmosphere. My only issue with the Fleece is it doesn't treat anyone looking for a quick drink or just deciding what they are doing the same. Drinkers are all made to sit in 'The Snug' which is a small area that usually becomes crowded. I understand that Pubs nowadays need to maximise their meal covers for income but this policy puts me off going here and I am local. I have been in with literally zero other customers there at a time where I will clearly leave before any diners appear (with a toddler) and still I will be sent to 'The Snug' as will anyone else after a drink. So if you want a meal go for it, if you want to chill out at 5pm and think about if you want a meal.... not great,

Service here was truly excellent and the food was delicious. As a group of six we ordered a selection of dishes from both the main menu and the light bites and all the meals were excellent with generous portions, even those from the light bite menu. The staff were welcoming and friendly and dealt with a small delay in our order with apologies and a round of drinks on the house. Highly recommend the beef burger.

I went to the Fleece Inn on a week day evening. It was very busy so it is important to book in advance. I had the cod & chips - this was a wonderful piece of fish, but the serving of chips hidden beneath was rather miserly. I had a pint of Guinness brought over to the table (by the landlady) and needed a step ladder to get down to it (see photo) - very disappointing! I was also presented with the bill at 21:30 and informed the pub closed at 21:00 hrs - so no time to chat over coffee and it felt like we were being invited to leave. Overall, I love what they’ve done with the Fleece, there is a nice ambience and I did enjoy the food, but I felt it let itself down with the little things!

We visited the Fleece for Sunday lunch and found the dining room buzzing with diners. A small but varied menu included the usual Sunday roasts (beef, pork, nut roast). The beef and the nut roast were very tasty and well presented. The pudding menu was indeed a proper menu and decisions were not easy to make. If you select the cheese board, a treat awaits! The room was busy busy but the staff were equal to this and service was friendly and prompt. The Fleece has rightly earned a firm reputation for good food served in pleasant surroundings.

Really lovely setting, relaxed atmosphere, very friendly and helpful team. The venison was cooked to perfection and served with seasonal vegetables and buttery potatoes.....that was so good I had to try the chocolate creme brulle for pudding, not disappointed!! I will definitely be going again soon 😁

We dined here twice during the week we were on holiday. Sunday lunch was excellent I had Roast pork and my husband the beef. Good sized portions and plenty of vegetables. So full we could not manage a pudding. One evening we had the Fish cakes and pate for starters both excellent and then the spiced chicken for mains which was delicious. Food arrived on both occasions piping hot, well presented and quickly. The Service was also excellent, staff were very friendly and helpful.

We had booked dinner here for Saturday night as were in the area for the weekend and decided to try it for lunch the day before first. When we arrived the gentleman, who I think is the manager, welcomed us and took us to a table and made us feel very welcome, we ordered drinks Which came quickly and we were not at all rushed (we were chatting instead of looking at the menu), and the team were happy to just let us take our time, a really nice atmosphere was created by the team being so friendly and helpful. The décor at the Fleece is really nice, its not cluttered like some bars but pristine and well thought out. The tables are not too close together either which is nice. The food is very well cooked and presented, 3 of us ordered the fish and chips and it comes gluten free so we thought may be heavy batter but we were very pleasantly surprised as its very light and tasty batter, the whole meals were delicous and went down a treat. We liked it so much we decided that rather than book somewhere else the next night we would definitely keep our reservation, Which we were delighted we did as the next night the food was just as delicous and the Saturday atmosphere was fantastic, we really cannot recommend Fleece Inn enough, its absolutely wonderful.

We visited this pub on a Sunday afternoon with our dog expecting to sit outside as it looked very busy inside. A very helpful waiter told us that we were more than welcome to bring our dog inside but after explaining he was a nervous dog around other dogs , we decided to sit outside knowing that there were other dogs inside. He brought out menus and took our drinks order very promptly. When he came outside, he informed us that there was a table in the snug area that had no other dogs in and we were more than welcome to sit in there! We only got a few snacky bits as we were eating later on, but what we had was amazing and seeing the other food made us wish we had ordered a full dinner. Needless to say , we will be back ! Thankyou !
