This is a friendly, well-run pub. We chose it for Sunday lunch. The sign outside says local food, and the cooking followed through on that. It was good quality, really enjoyable and all home made. Very good indeed, and excellent value. I can imagine coming...here all the time if I lived nearby. Make sure to leave ample time as the service isn't super fast. But who cares?More

We enjoyed a drink in this traditional and comfortable pub which was served by friendly and welcoming staff. It looks like the large beer garden at the rear is family friendly and a great place for a summertime tipple.

After visiting the local National Trust workhouse today (17th February) we dropped in at the highly rated Hearty Goodfellow for dinner. Can't really comment on the beer as I was driving. Service was good. As we sat down we got presented with the menu and...told there was no steak available. Why? "had run out". I've never understood why a pub can have run out of steak by 6pm, particularly when there's a great looking butchers shop about 500m away. Why wouldn't someone go and get some during the day? Anyway we ordered deep fried mushrooms which were very nice, fish and chips was very nice, I chose the 'pie of the week' in lieu of the steak that I really wanted and it was quite average, not as good as we make at home. Hence the overall rating of 3.More

Visited today for 2nd time , on our wedding anniversary. Had a great meal at lunchtime, the homemade pie both the chicken and Steak are out of this world. Excellent friendly service, warm and friendly pub. A great British pub to be proud of.

Celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary was made all the more special by the Goodfellow’s tasty food and wonderful staff (a shout out for Lauren). 9 months ago we booked Alchemilla in town for this celebration only to be let down the night before! The friendly...team at HG more than made up for the disappointment. We loved the food and celebrated in style.More

This pub has a good choice of food and drink. I suppose, more importantly, you get a very friendly welcome and proper old fashioned service. They made me a superb BLT sandwich whilst the kitchen was closed!!! Very kind. Visit this pub, the whole experience...is the tops!.....I only write reviews in exceptional circumstances..... We thought that we would treat the family to an evening meal here and the food was very good, well presented, tasty and fairly priced, as were the drinks. However, the front of house staff provided a very disappointing standard of service. We waited 35...minutes for our plates to be cleared and then had to ask for the dessert menu. Initially, the team were busy taking selfies, texting or brushing their hair behind the bar. After twenty minutes, I went up to the bar and it was like the Marie Celeste, no sign of life! Another ten minutes, same issue! Eventually, I managed to attract attention before we became fossilized permanent fixtures of this establishment but this was a good meal spoiled. There were only three tables to serve, so goodness knows what it's like when it's busy......More

This is the second time I’ve eaten in the Hearty Good Fellow and the friendly staff make you feel so welcome as soon as you walk through the door . Yesterday evening I had the Olive with dips starter which was large enough for a...main , very tasty and well worth the £6.95 . Will be going back for sure when in staying in Southwell.More
