Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Was finally able to visit again after lockdown with my other half, we had an amazing jacket potato and Welsh rarebit with two coffees followed by homemade cake. we felt very safe and employees assured government guidelines were followed. we went on a Tuesday where the new scheme of “eat to help out” was on offer meaning we saved money on our meal!

We moved into the North Notts area from Yorkshire in mid-2021, and since then have visited Gossips variously for breakfast, morning coffee and lunch. On every occasion, the food and drinks set before us have been delicious - and clearly "home made". The menu is imaginative and there is always something that takes one's eye. A mention must also be made of the staff, who, without exception, are friendly and personable, and treat the customers as real people, not as mere additions to the daily sales figures. This restaurant is deservedly popular and the owners are to be commended for maintaining consistently high standards, none of which is automatic and requires sustained effort.

We called into Gossips for lunch when shopping in Southwell. First impressions were very good, very clean and well ventilated with well spaced out tables and chairs. It was good to see a menu with more than one vegetarian option as well as choices on the lunch time specials board. We both chose the nut roast which was served with a jacket potato and salad and was excellent. Friendly efficient service and great value for money. Although one toilet appeared to be out of use to accommodate the outdoor seating the one next to it was in operation and didn't create a problem

I was looking for a vegan option in Southwell and this was the only eatery with a vegan option on their menu online. I had the baked potato with beans which was fine but others in my group had a disappointing small portion of bland pate and toast and a lasagne with contained peas, sweetcorn and celery?! It seemed like they just threw in some leftovers and covered it in thick greasy melted cheese. The staff seemed fed up when we tried to order food (apart from a very cheerful waitress who was lovely) and the toilets were out of order. We were directed to the most disgusting public toilet I've ever seen. Disappointing all round.

We often call into Gossips for coffee/lunch/a snack as we live in the county and visit Southwell fairly regularly. We visited on a recent Saturday lunchtime, along with a friend from Gloucestershire. The rainy morning, after weeks of summer weather, had brought people into Southwell and Gossips was extremely busy. However, we were shown to a table and treated with the same courtesy and smiles by ALL the staff, despite their coping with a very heavy lunchtime service. The Welsh rarebits and filled jacket potatoes, with generous garnish, were excellent. We make excuse to return to Gossips and are never disappointed. One always has the impression that the staff make a real effort.

My husband and I visited Gossips on Friday 21st July 2023 at around 10am for breakfast. We have visited Gossips for the last 10 years and like to support local businesses. However our experience this time was disappointing. My husband and I found a table and waited to be served. The lady waitress who was in charge proceeded to clear the tables and did not acknowledge us…she continued to clear and wipe the tables. There were no other customers waiting to be served! Approx 10 mins went by…then a younger girl came to take our order. We had our breakfast then proceeded to the counter to pay. ( we were the only ones at the counter paying). The waitress who ignored us earlier then said ‘was everything ok sorry for the wait’ before taking payment. So my husband and I both came to the conclusion that the waitress knew we were waiting and consciously made a decision to ignore us! We were not impressed at all.

I visited for the first time, and decided to prefer the full breakfast with coffee and orange juice.
The waitress was very polite and the service was excellent. The breakfast itself was extremely tasty and you can tell that they use high quality ingredients.
I can see why this business has been in existence for 36 years as they know how to look after customers.
Definitely will be making a return visit.
Thank you very much for a lovely breakfast and coffee.

Excellent find. Extensive menu covering breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. We chose omelette and chilli con carne. Excellent, good service and not too long await for food. Reasonable access for less able customers as you enter but access to toilets would be more of a challenge. These are situated outside across a yard, ok for dry sunny days but not ideal. Changes are difficult in a conservation area with neighbours having access across the yard. Plenty of seating upstairs. Well worth a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Good service and good food too. The ploughman’s lunch was delicious as was the jacket potato though couldn’t understand why the potato was served in a bowl on a plate. Why not straight on the plate. The place seemed a little tired but okay.

Nice Atmosphere. Awesome selection of cakes/ scones etc. was a bit disappointed in the all day breakfast. Mushrooms very plentiful but only one rasher of bacon & one sausage (which was very dry). Toast was plentiful & the jam was lush though.
Service was good even though it was quite busy.

Great to sit outside in the tiny courtyard behind the premises. The BLT was a triple decker with a phenomenal amount of bacon. Impossible to eat with dignity and a need for several napkins afterwards, but very tasty!
Friendly staff. A very English cafe.
Southwell prices. Two sandwiches and two cordials £20.00

Been to this place several times over the years for a hot drink and a cake, and never had any previous complaints as the cakes are home- made, very nice and plenty of choice.
However, visited Southwell with my wife yesterday and we decided to call in for cake and cup of tea. They have reduced the number of tables to allow more distance between them and there were only two other couples besides us. We were getting close to leaving but my wife needed the toilet and it was only at that point that the manager said they were closed and we would have to use the toilets in the public car park, a very brisk 7 or 8 minute walk. My wife has previous experience of these, they are far from clean and cramped. Had we known when entering the building that the toilets were closed, then we would not have given them our custom, and gone elsewhere. Why not have a prominent sign in the café saying the toilets are not in use? Why are they not in use? Hardly a social distancing problem as I think there is one toilet for ladies and one for gents. When will they be in use again? Once the virus has disappeared? Which could be years. They were hardly overwhelmed with customers, so there wouldn't have been a queue. We felt it was an appalling situation and we had been deceived. Consequently, on principle, we won't be giving them any more of our custom on future visits to Southwell. This rating is for the toilet situation and not for the food/drink.

Our first visit yesterday to the lovely town of Southwell with it's beautiful Minster. Called into Gossips Coffee House for lunch (chilli for me, all day breakfast for hubby) which was speedily served by very pleasant, efficient staff. Food was delicious and nicely presented in clean comfortable surroundings. Can highly recommend.

Visited here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon.
The staff here are so very friendly and helpful. Great selection on the menu and really reasonably priced. It’s no wonder this place gets so busy.
Can highly recommend the full English breakfasts. My gingerbread latte was pure Christmas in a glass. Hubby’s carrot cake to die for.
It’s a shame we don’t live closer or we’d eat here regularly.
Highly recommended!!!
