I note the previous review, in which it was said that The Plough had not observed best practice regarding Covid 19. If that was the case on the occasion that reviewer was there, it was an error that had most definitely been addressed when we ate there on Thursday evening (16th Juy).
We were seated at a table well away from other diners. The tables were wiped down frequently with what appeared to be anti-bacterial/viral solution. The cutlery was not left out on the table but presented to us, once we'd placed our order, in its own wooden box along with sachets of condiments and disposable napkins - and all were in clean condition. When the waitress brought our drinks, she put the tray on the table and invited us to take our glasses from it, we assumed to reduce her contact with them. I certainly would not say that I saw any evidence of the staff not taking seriously their obligations around customer safety and protection during the pandemic.
As to the food ... absolutely splendid. The varied menu satisfied all three of us, despite our different requirements. It was well cooked, appeared individually and freshly prepared (rather than the de-frosted, wholesaler bought, offerings of some 'pub grub' establishments) but not outrageously priced, given the high quality of the food. I'm an occasional visitor to Scalby (relatives in the area) and last ate here about 6 months ago and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The standards had certainly not slipped in the interim.
Last, but not least, the ambiance: lovely decor, comfortable seating and good lighting. The ladies toilets are clean and delightfully appointed.
All in all, a pretty ideal eating experience. I'll be eating here next time I visit Scarborough.

We ate twice in one weekend. Dinner on Friday then Sunday lunch. We were very well looked after. Dinner - Fish Pie excellent. We went for the festive menu for Sunday Lunch and it was first class without any standard caterpack produce. Great fresh vegetables,
We spotted others having post lunch cocktails so joined in.
This is a very good restaurant with great food and good value wines.
We wondered if the locals eating there realise what a gem they have on their doorstep?

We had a three course meal for two with bottle of wine included to heat and enjoy at home this evening. We collected in the afternoon. The quality was superb. We enjoyed every morsel. A very interesting and unusual menu and not something we would have cooked at home for ourselves. Well done to the chef as the food quality did not deteriorate on heating. A great effort at a really reasonable price.

Had a weekend in Scarborough and decided to book the plough for our second nights stay ,we arrived a little early and told our room was going to be ready for 3pm which is the correct check in time any way so decided to have a drink on the front of the pub which was lovely and quiet ,the location is great as your in a little village with not much through traffic ,on being told our room was ready we was taken up to room 7 which is on the 3rd floor ,on entering the room to our surprise the room was compact as it felt like it was a loft space there was probably 2ft max down the sides of a double bed ,low ceilings and the en-suite was the same with eived ceilings,we was really disappointed with the room as it was £190 and thought that it would have been more spacious for that type of money ,knowing this was the last room when I booked I knew complaining would have gotten me no where .
When I booked there was an option to pick a quiet room which I did but never got this as was awakened at 1.00 am from the people outside the pub singing and guests shouting to be let in ,I’m all for having a good time but feel this needs addressing and guests informed when checking in to that room that it’s on the front of the pub ,small and noisey at night time ,we dined in the restaurant and can’t fault the food but the ambiance in the bar area were we was allocated our table is more for drinking than dining .
Breakfast came and was sent back as all the food on the plate was cold especially the beans that felt like they’d just been taken out of the fridge ,the waitress took my breakfast back and a fresh hot cooked breakfast was brought out 10 mins later which to be honest was average, bacon hard as well as poached egg but sausage beautiful,I would stop here again as the staff were fantastic and we had a great afternoon at the nags head which is 100 yards up the road listening to local folk music which was different, but would keep these issues in mind when booking a room
Thanks Mr n Mrs C

We’d eaten here once before and while my partner liked it I thought it was just so-so. We went again on my partner’s birthday mainly because her first choice restaurant was fully booked.
We were greeted at the door, gave our names then ignored while the front of house went off to do something else. She returned after a few minutes and proceeded to give her attention to something else. Eventually she took us to our table.
This is a so called Gastropub and diners should be aware that their dining table could be in close proximity to the bar and to people who are solely there for a drink. Initially we found it very noisy due to three such non diners but thankfully they left before we were served.
Menus were presented and drinks ordered. This is not a cheap eatery, the cheapest main course is £14, starters and deserts £7-8 each.
The menu is not large but is supplemented by a specials board on which there was lobster and halibut at £30 and £25 respectively. There is also a pie of the day. Today it was chicken and leek with mash and greens at £16. All 3 of us ordered the pie. Two substituted the mash for chips.
The wait was lengthy but acceptable. The pie with mash arrived and the mash was tepid. It went back to be microwaved. Apologies were accepted and we were asked if we wanted any condiments or sauces. We asked for salt and vinegar for the chips.
The two of us with chips decided to start.
The pie was served in a dish with just a pastry top. It was tasty but not very large. The chicken in it was good and tasty but barely half a chicken breast in total.
We were about 1/3 of the way through Our meals when my partner’s reheated meal was returned. At this point we also received salt and pepper but no vinegar.
The greens, probably broccoli and kale was plentiful but the portion of chips was not large. Nor were they the best chips I’d ever had but they were acceptable.
I feel that an establishment charging quite high prices should have a higher quality of food and service. On this occasion the Plough came up short on both of these.
On the plus side the decor is trendy and the toilets very clean.

We booked a table for a birthday celebration. The table turned out to be in the bar area not restaurant; consequently, as the bar was busy we were hemmed in by people standing for drinks which was very uncomfortable. When seated we were not offered a drinks menu and had to request it when the starters arrived at the table to order wine. The starters and desserts were good but the main course was extremely disappointing. The turkey and vegetables could only be described as ordinary. As the bar was busy we had a long wait to pay the bill and a service charge of over £15 was automatically added with no indication on any of the menus that this would be the case. The service in the crowded bar area did not warrant this charge. To avoid spoiling the birthday celebration we did not bother querying the unexpected service charge.
On the upside, a staff member called Tom was excellent.

I would definitely stay her again, but NOT in room 5, it's in the eve's of the building, beautifully decorated, and first impressions are wow! But after hitting your head on the beams and no window to look out of or open it's 100% overpriced, claustrophobic nightmare!!
Luckily it had a comfy bed, it's saving grace.
Seeing one of the other rooms, I would just ask not to be put in room 5, as the other rooms look beautifully appointed. The inn is immaculately clean, and evening meals are superb, and good value.
Breakfast is basic, little choice and we waited 45mins for a continental and a "yorkshire breakfast" in the end I had to knock on the kitchen door, and ask if they were chasing the hens? All that said the staff were great, some needed a little training, but a lovely stay, and next time we will avoid room 5

We booked this restaurant for a Fathers Day treat and were welcomed by blank stares from the staff who didn’t seem to recognise our booking! As a table for 5 we were squeezed into a tiny corner until a member of staff produced another table! We ordered our meal and then to our horror a dog the size of a small horse arrived at the table next to us! It stunk! It sat on the seats, had its paws on the table and was being fed from the table! More dogs arrived and by the time we finished our meal there were 5 dogs in the restaurant. I recognise that this is a country pub/restaurant and get a lot of custom as a dog friendly restaurant, but this was over the top! I had to go and sit outside to get away from the stench of the dog/horse. I expressed my concerns to three members of the staff on the way out and received the same blank stares that we were welcomed with.
The food was OK

After a much anticipated visit to The Plough in Scalby, we were disappointed. Even though there were tables available in the restaurant areas and we had pre-booked, we were givene a table right next to the bar.
Fine dining atmosphere, it wasn't...I spent the evening watching glasses being cleaned and a constant flow of people passing our table.
We would have liked to have sampled more of the menu but we simply ordered a main meal and chose to leave. We expected fine dining but due to poor location of our table, left feeling disappointed...

We stayed in room eight which had a real quality feel about it with a roll top bath, great shower and the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. We ate in the restaurant and had a couple of minor issues with the service but the staff couldn't do enough to make it right again. The food was great. All the staff were very pleasant and friendly, from the young barman that showed us to our room to the young girl that was serving breakfast and checked us out.
It was a really nice stay and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

We called the plough for a last minute reservation, they accommodated us however and informed us that we would be outside. The “outside “ area was fantastic and filled with heaters and a glass Roof The staff were attentive, supplying us drinks until the chefs could serve us. The food was beautiful and well presented.

Situated in a beautiful residential area, with three pubs, the parking is not that easy close by but manageable when we went there.
First impressions on arrival were not overwhelming and we felt it was a bit tired and the waiter, through absolutely no fault of his own, was difficult for me to understand through his mask.
However, have to say the service was very efficient and prompt. The food was AMAZING!!
You have on offer a choice of starters or “tapas” and we went for three of these to share - being smoked salmon, crab pot and burrata. They were sensational and plenty big enough. The pickles were mild and magnificent and the use of cucumber and dill throughout the courses inspired!
We both chose, from the specials, for mains the Halibut with mussels, pickled veg, samphire and hazelnuts (we were asked about allergies when we ordered) and again it was a good size piece and the whole plate magnificent. We LOVED the food!!
We came to Scarborough with mixed feelings but, apart from the South Beach area, left with extraordinary memories of great food, the moors that surround it, some very pleasant and quiet beaches close by and some beautiful houses and residential areas.

We visited twice recently in three days in August 23.
On both occasions I would say the food was really nice but the service, particularly on the Sunday when we visited was not overly great especially for the premium prices you are being charged.
We were left on both visits waiting to ask for more drinks and the desert menu and again on both occasions we’ve had to get up and leave to pay the bill rather than being given the bill and to cap it all off we were charged 20 more than our bill that we spotted only as we were about to leave.
For me it seems the more inexperienced members of staff weren’t always so aware of what good service should look like particularly more galling when we were about to leave on the Sunday 2 members of staff were stood in front of the bar with an empty rest of the restaurant/pub.
As mentioned the food was nice and the honey roast ham a particular highlight as was the sticky toffee pudding but as you can tell the poor service was the last memory which is a shame.

We booked here at quite short notice as a resturant in the Scarborough town centre let us down. It was for a very special occasion - out parents diamond wedding anniversary! The manager at the Plough very kindly managed to fit us in on two tables close by each other. The interior of the pub has such a nice ambience and is really nicely decorated. The staff were so lovely with us and couldn't have been more helpful and patient with us! The food was to die for - there were 13 of us having 3 courses and we couldn't find a fault with a single plate of food. Everything was delicious and we weren't left waiting at all despite us being a large party. Thank you for making what was a very special day even more special for our mum and dad!

I have eaten here several times and always book when we have family or friends visiting.
Arrived last night for a 645pm booking.
The service was very slow possibly new staff who by all means have to learn the ropes.
Our mains arrived before all our starters which we obviously sent back.
We waited twenty minutes before our main was re delivered to our table after we had finished our starters.
The beef pie which is usually moist and so succulent was dried out and the lamb was cold.
We also had to wait for cutlery to be brought to the table.
Coffees arrived with no spoons or sugar and we felt that sitting in the recess area the waiters overlooked us.
I did not want to comment at the time as this are was occupied with several diners.
Very disappointing and will have to reconsider this venue as our place of choice when we have a special occasion.
I do hope this was a one of and not the future quality of The Plough.
