Very small venue, if you can get a seat outside then it makes it worthwhile, if you cant then much less of an experience. Fortunately as we were quite late for lunch we got a spot looking across the Bay and had a beautiful view. The menu is English pub grub, quite extensive, fairly box standard though. I had scampi... We hadn't been to the Royal for at least 10 years and remembered it being a really nice pub. This time though we were disappointed, in particular by the food. I had a tuna melt toasted sandwich, which was made of thin white bread and was more mayonnaise than tuna. It came with a bit of salad (no dressing) and... More

Very disappointing meals after reading positive comments on these site. Fish & Chips bland, lacking flavour, chips over cooked & yet mushy. Our friends had Mussels which they left, as cold & tasteless, mentioned this to the waiter when,we were asked if we enjoyed our meal, ( he looked about 14 years old) said he would mention this to the... Visited on a Sunday lunch time. Friendly staff, small unspoilt dining/drinking area. Adequate selection of typical pub food on offer. Felt it was quite expensive for what we got (fish & chips and sandwich). Considering the close proximity to the sea, would've expected to see more 'fishy' items on the menu. Only gripe is that chips, in my mind, should... More

Visited the royal for the first time last week, found the barstaff very cheerful, helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The fish and chips were beautifully presented and tasted delicious, will definitely be visiting the Royal on our next visit:-) Jean & Ray

We took the dog and the kids in here after a wet hour on the beach and had a lovely dinner. Not too pricey and the chips were fantastic. It was a really lovely place and a fab beach and there was no other place to eat so it was a relief that it was so good and so welcoming.... More

My initial impression of this small pub was that it was dirty and unwelcoming. We were visiting with our young grandaughter and two dogs and had looked up the pub because they accept dogs inside. However, most of the tables hadn't been cleared from previous customers and were covered in spilt beer. We only wanted a light lunch so ordered... More

I ate here twice over the May BH because it was near where I was staying, they allow dogs and Runswick Bay is so beautiful. I thought the food was quite pricey, presented nicely but was only OK. Good beer and proper pub feel to the place.
