Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Booked and paid a £30 deposit for lunch on Easter Sunday only to turn up to find the restaurant closed with a closed until further notice sign on the door. No message from them to inform us. DO Not Book with this restaurant wherever they...are now.More

Stopped here unexpectedly for a roast. Was shocked to see it was £20 per person. I understand everything is more expensive these days but my belly of pork was about 3 inches long, tiniest bit of meat I’ve ever been served. One carrot, half a...parsnip, blob of cauliflower cheese, 3 potatoes and a bit of red cabbage. it was nice, not the best I’ve had and ridiculously small.More

Eggy beer, flat Pepsi, frozen veg, piece of pork the size of a matchbox, all served “warm” at best. Worst Roast I’ve ever experienced. The new Tyler’s kiln, A skid mark on the briefs of its predecessor.

Most unusual starters that were inspired and tasty. I loved the red cabbage and apple starter. Whole atmosphere very friendly and relaxed. Waiting staff very attentive. Food beautifully cooked and presented. A range of traditional pub food or the more inspired lunch menu to choose...from. Our family chose widely from both menus and we were all happy.More

Disappointing... Have been to Kathton House in Sturry and always great food, classic service and well looked after. Took partner to KH @ Tyler's Kiln as they'd never been to old KH - booked well in advance and excitedly looked forward to Tasting Menu with...matched wines - a special night out and given as a gift. O. M. G. It was so disappointing! Unrecognisable to old KH standards. Mixture of £100 menu next to bar and pub menu just doesn't work. A couple of the courses had glimpses of old KH quality, flavour and standard. But one of the wines was corked and undrinkable, which we mentioned to the wine waiter who said she'd tasted it, but then did nothing but take away our full glasses. We felt like we were in the way as staff packed up while we ate dessert. No offer of coffee or cheese. Such a shame - won't be going back...More

When we found out Sam was chef patron here, we couldn't wait to give it a try. WOW! We had a meal here for our anniversary and we were blown away by the standard of food and the service to match. Every little detail from...the variety of butter for the bread to the little palate cleanser we were served, just tasted spectacular! The duck I had was cooked to perfection and my souffle was incredible! Such a shame I had missed the sticky toffee souffle that you had on your December menu though. To top it off, Sam came out to meet us when our main was served! Keep up the incredible work and we look forward to seeing you again soon. You are our favourite restaurant to eat at now!More

We visited Kathton last night for my father’s 90th birthday and had the most wonderful evening in the private dining room. The effort that the team put in both in organising the evening which included laying on a specific desert because of an allergy that...one of my guests has, the level of communication and the clear willingness to incorporate all requests and timings was evident from the very first time we spoke. Yanka was so helpful in co-ordinating the dinner arrangements. On the evening of the front of house manager, Ellie, could not have been more helpful and pleasant in leading her team, and the service we received from her and Grady was exemplary, there were some small delays and hiccups as one would expect in any high class restaurant, where each course is freshly prepared and the way these young people dealt with those was a real tribute to them. On the food front, what can one say Chef, Sam, has recently started and he took time out a very busy service about a week ago to talk to me on the phone about my guests allergy, but also last night after what was clearly was a busy evening for the kitchen took time out to come out and say hello to everyone and chat with us which made my father feel very special indeed. Everyone complimented every aspect of the meal and we all left with a big smile on our faces. We will definitely be returning as we are reasonably regular customers as a family and wish Sam and the team all the best in seeking further recognition for the quality of food and service. Kathton has always stood for this but it is impressive how the ambition and the desire to continue to develop is so evident.More

Visited tonight. Absolutely terrible food! Paid 32£ for a fill it steak being absolutely small!! The soup was like baby food! Super thick! Says smash burger but it’s not. It’s absolutely horrible Pattie. Waited 45 mins for a starter and I had the scotch egg...that had some shell left on. Can get better food at a harvester for a fraction of the price. Will never ever come back. The girls and guys on service was great! Although very slow. I have no idea what on earth has happened to this place but food is shocking.More

I have been wanting to go for a meal at the Tylers Kiln for ages and having previously had a delicious meal at Kathton House whilst they were in Sturry, this seemed the perfect pairing. The recent negative reviews on this site were concerning but...I needn't have worried. We had an absolutely fantastic Sunday roast that was perfectly cooked, followed by a selection of delicious puddings. The portions were generous, the food was hot and the service was accommodating and attentive. The venue itself is lovely - a cosy pub with some quirky features and displays that throwback to the history of the area, and the background music was welcome but not intrusive. Overall, a lovely afternoon and a meal that was spot on.More

Having arranged a birthday lunch to celebrate my daughter's 40th, this saw a gathering of 14 family members ranging from 5 to 70, all with keen appetites, and high expectations, descend on Kathton House last Sunday. We pre-selected from the Sunday Lunch menu, which undoubtedly...eases pressure for both restaurant and customers and is perfectly understandable for large groups, and meant we had the usual debates about who-eats-what away from the table. It was great having the upper floor to ourselves, as it provided a very intimate and self contained space and worked perfectly. The staff were professional and attentive, we had very close, but never obtrusive, attention, and we never felt forgotten; having met the chef, who spoke enthusiastically and informatively about the menu, it made me understand that Kathton House has talent behind the scene as well as front of house. I will be trying a few variations on cabbage that he suggested, redolent of something from a recent trip to Kerridge's Hand and Flowers, where Chef spent some time. The fixed menu was a well thought out and interesting take on a traditional Sunday Lunch menu, with several nice twists and it was all beautifully presented. I won't go through all the choices we made other than to say I opted for pork belly, which was melt in the mouth gorgeous, with a thinnest layer of perfect crackling. I was very impressed by, and will also recommend, the cured salmon, and my daughter in law was impressed by the fact she was able to interpose something from the A La Carte menu. Most importantly the focus of the gathering was delighted by the choice of venue, and felt Kathton House had delivered her a birthday to remember.More

Wonderful and welcoming staff. We have reserved the table in advance and I must say it was definitely one of ours favourite places to dine. The atmosphere is relaxed with wonderful enthusiastic team. We came for lunch and there were choices from quite a few...different menus. We opt for a mixture of dishes between 5 of us. Reading previous reviews I was a bit apprehensive about the waiting time however at the same time I appreciate that fresh food takes time to cook!!! Well done chefs. All of the dishes were sublime with exquisite presentation. Hard to choose a favourite! Thank you, we will be back .More

Two of us chose fish and chips for our lunch today because we had heard how good it was here. Our friends were not proved wrong! Being a Northerner by birth I am fussy about this meal but can honestly say that this fish and...chips with mushy peas was one of the best I have ever tasted! Beautifully presented. The friendly service added to the occasion and the wait for our meal was just right giving us time to enjoy drinks beforehand. We will certainly be back to Kathton House at Tyler's Kiln maybe for more fish and chips or to sample their Sunday lunch or mushroom risotto which we hear via the grapevine are also excellent! We have eaten at this venue many times (we live locally) and not been impressed by the quality of the food or service under the previous owners so decided to give it a miss for a while. After todays experience we will definitely be back! - not the same as Kathton House when it was in Sturry (which again we visited many times) but who would expect it to be in a totally different setting ?!! Thank you to all the staff and good luck for the future.More

Kathton House used to be a standout dining experience in the area. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. The attention to detail was noteworthy - the homemade butter served with bread was at the perfect temperature for spreading on the provided bread,...and the menu and food were clearly explained, making guests feel welcomed. Unfortunately, Kathton House has now moved to Tyler's Kiln, and it appears that it was a buyout rather than a straightforward move. The quality of both the food and service has declined, and the small touches that made Kathton House so special are nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, a pub menu is now being served in the main dining area. On multiple occasions, we have tried to enjoy a fine dining experience at the new location, but each time our experience was ruined by loud tables eating pub food next to us. Additionally, we normally order the tasting menu, but upon noticing that the portions are mostly smaller than their a-la-carte counterparts and that you can order all the items on the tasting menu for 20% cheaper by ordering a-la-carte, we realised how much of a money grab this was. On our second visit, we decided to skip the tasting menu due to this. Overall, it seems that this restaurant is poorly executing a fine dining experience while attempting to trade on the reputation of a once-great restaurant. We will not be returning.More

Poor menu choices, very disappointing. Cod and chips was overly greasy, and the fish was rather dry. It must’ve been a frozen cod tail. Staff were very unwelcoming, almost felt like we were a burden on their night. All of that on top of the...awful choice of decor & white cloths??? Clearly the owners are trying to be a dang restaurant and a classic pub at the same time but unfortunately are getting it horribly wrong and from reading previous reviews others feel the same. Such a shame.More
