About
Hidden away down a little lane on the edge of Bentworth Village in Hampshire, The Sun Inn is a very pretty, flower-adorned and unspoilt rural free-house dating back to the 16th century. Brick and board floors are laid with a rustic mix of scrubbed pine tables, benches and settles and the original beams are hung with sparkling horse brasses. Walls are adorned with plates and prints depicting the history of the village of Bentworth and it is surely one of the most atmospheric and authentic pubs to be found in Hampshire.

In the current circumstances my wife and I are working through all of the pubs which offer good food within a scenic walk from the centre of Alton - we visited the Sun for lunch yesterday and it will certainly be added to near the top of that list, it's one of the best places we have come across. The Sun is a lovely traditional pub (it's more of a pub that does food than a restaurant that used to be a pub) with a really friendly welcome - our lunches were really good quality and very good value. I would particularly recommend the hummus to start and the treacle tart for pudding!! The necessary "Covid" safety arrangements were all in place but didn't overshadow the experience or make the whole event too clinical. Really, this is a perfect example of a country pub for a lunch out. Highly recommended

We were celebrating our mum. She grew up in the village and it would have been her birthday. The pub was a perfect place to relax, enjoy Sunday lunch and share many memories. The staff were very helpful and flexible and we had a table for 14 in a very cosy section. Food was delicious particularly the Sticky Toffee pudding.
We will definitely come back.

A lovely village pub! Decided to eat here with a friend and we were not disappointed. The pub is as you'd imagine an old village pub to be: log fires, traditional floors, memorabilia and old photos etc. The first thing you are met with is a very friendly welcome. All staff are super-attentive. The menu is standard pub meals with a few specials thrown in. We both had moules mariniere and I have to say, they were the best mussels I have had anywhere, at any time and in any country. Forget Belgium, forget France and get yourself down to Bentworth, there's a mussel magician working in that kitchen! The selection of real ales is also very good and it's pleasing that they are local. Please note that the pub is dog friendly - I took my lab in and she was even given her own little dish of dog treats and a bowl of water! I believe food is only served Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunch at the moment and I would strongly advise booking as it was busy when we were there. Thanks to all at The Sun Inn for a wonderful evening.

Imagine a perfect traditional English pub, The Sun Inn is just what I would imagine, low beams, roaring log fire, friendly staff and delicious food. We had the roast beef, it was cooked to perfection and so tender, huge yorkshire pudding and plenty of vegetables. The sticky toffee pudding was scrumptious, I would highly recommend treating yourself.
We met with friends and it was the perfect environment to catch up and chat while eating delicious food. Great atmosphere with friendly, helpful staff.

We haven't visited for a while, but today came with our 2 children. Absolutely amazing food, so delicious. Service also very very good. Our children are only young (2 and 4) and sometimes eating out can be lots of hassle. Today we didn't feel this at all. They both had what looked like a delicious fish and chips, and they wiped the plates clean!
I would recommend the hummous starter platter, perfect portion size and really delicious. My husband had the black pudding hash, which he said was "amazing" . The steak was cooked to perfection and the burger went down a treat too.
Well done 'The Sun' , you're doing everything right; we will be back again soon!!

We booked Sunday lunch for a rare family gathering of 13. The Sun Inn is small pub but has a lovely room just off the main bar which was perfect for us. The staff were amazing at getting us drinks (a great selection of unusual ales) and then serving us delicious food, the majority of us ordered the Sunday roast followed by a selection of indulgent puddings. We had a marvellous family time and will be back next March on our annual pilgrimage to visit the family graves in St. Mary's Church, Bentworth. We all said The Sun Inn is a hidden gem!!

This has been a favourite go-to pub for years, and has always proved reliable.
I have to say that the food was good on our recent visit, if somewhat on the pricey side, and we have no complaints with the five meals served. The beer selection isn't what it used to be but what is on offer, whilst not exciting, is ok.
This said, we were horrified and astounded when presented with our bill to hear the phrase "A service charge has been added"
What for? Why? There was no prior notice of any such fee, nothing written on the menus, no mention of any further charges at any time from any of the friendly staff, and neither was there any mention anywhere on the bill of it being optional.
That's completely unreasonable by any standard.
This was pointed out, and the charge removed in a friendly manner, but it simply shouldn't be there. If the Sun needs more income from it's food offering, it should increase it's (already pricey) charges openly and fairly.
A serice charge in an English pub?
Unfriendly, unreasonable and unnecessary, and a sad blemish on what used to be a really good pub.

we went to this pub for lunch after a 5 mile walk round Bentworth. The food was really good (fish and chips, burger and chips followed by amazing pudding). After our rather wet walk in the rain, I was actually craving skinny chips smothered in salt. Not very healthy I know, but indulge me. Mentioned this to our host and a pot of table salt came with the meal ! He was extremely knowledgeable about the various draft beers / ales that were on offer and also had a wicked sense of humour. Other members of staff were also very efficient and pleasant. I would definitely recommend this inn and will return again.

Visited whilst walking in the area, the pub is very traditional with open fire, low beamed ceilings and home cooked food. The staff were really friendly and brought the food out quickly. Sadly the vegan burger had been removed from the menu and there were no alternatives. I made do with a starter but not really ideal. Hopefully the new management will look to make some changes to the menu.

We chose this pub as about halfway between our two families homes. Staff were attentive and helpful. Dining area very quaint with inglenook fireplace . All 5 of us were satisfied with our food orders the steak pie had lots of meat inside and all was hot.
Although there is a small car park at the right hand side of the pub and a tiny off road spot at the front if very busy parking could perhaps be a challenge to folk who are not familiar with the area and the lane seemed quite narrow to park out on the road. Overall a good experience of a traditional English country inn.

Everything you want from a country pub. Sunday roasts are really generous, cooked beautifully and very reasonably priced. Just about managed to squeeze in a lovely pudding. One of the best Sunday lunches I’ve had in a long time. Owners and staff are really welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend.

Beautiful pub with a log fire ,unfortunately the food didn’t match the place my partner had the pie which he couldn’t get his knife in the pastry solid hard? Why obviously not cooked fresh my pork belly was more like a thin chop and the cabbage had nor seen a hint of salt not sure why ours was so bad when l look at some of the reviews and also like l said it is a beautiful pub not not a restaurant but a 10% charge was added to the bill discretionary l was told shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Shame l was hoping for something a little better

First time I’ve been here in years - what a great treat! Atmosphere was cosy, Landlord and Landlady very friendly. Food was superb. We had steak pies (proper shortcrust pastry all around, full of tender meat), real home made gravy, herby roast potatoes and lovely veg. Pudding was delicious treacle tart and homemade vanilla ice cream. All delicious. Couple on the next table had the same and raved about theirs too. Lady opposite had a beetroot salad which she kept saying was lovely too. Nice beers on tap too. Can’t wait to return.

Popped in during long walk with our dog. The patio area outside was bathed in sunlight with the flowers making it impossible to walk on by. Tempted for a drink and then ciabatta lunch which was delicious. Was slightly nervous at £9.99 for fish or sausage ciabatta but was well worth it - both were large and tasty. Inside the pub looked wonderful - will come back for a proper meal soon.
