Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I thought this was a 5 star place. Very hard to find, and be sure to go to the main small bar up on the 8th or 9th floor, can't remember, we kept walking around trying to find it, not sure how my son figured...it out. It was pretty quiet when we were there so perhaps that is why we liked it so much. We just told the bartender to make some of his favorite drinks - they were all delicious and the craftsmanship in watching him make the drinks was a spectacle.More

Overhyped (appears in most of the searches of best bars in Tokyo), awful and unkind service, even more awful elevatorto the bar and the building itself

Do try to get a seat the bar and enjoy the atmosphere, showmanship and the alchemy. This guy knows his stuff and makes imaginative cocktails with high quality ingredients. It is an oasis of calm and civilisation is a busy part of the city. I'm...not sure why some reviews are so negative. I was a little uncertain how my bill had been made up when I looked at it later, but I think there was a 10% "seat charge" and a 10% service charge/tip added on? Anyway the all-inclusive cost of each of my three excellent cocktails averaged $17 USD each. For a bar of this quality that is a perfectly reasonable price. If I had not had a few drinks before I would have very happily sat there for three more.More

Loved this place. It’s very small so you may want to call ahead and make a reservation, if you can. It’s also somewhat difficult to find - you need to find the building and then take the elevator up to the ninth floor, where you’ll...then find the entrance on your left after you get off the elevator. The bartender is incredibly talented, and exceptionally creative. The drinks are a bit on the pricier side, but not crazy for a good cocktail in Tokyo. Overall, Benfiddich lives up to it’s reputation and is a wonderful, comfortable and delicious place to enjoy a drink while in Tokyo.More

Came here last year and it was our worst bar experience anywhere in the world. Overrated spot with stuck vibes and terrible service. The staff was rude and unattentive. Been to dive bars better than this, do not recommend.

We loved this bar. It is a different experience. If you can, sit in the bar so you can speak to the owner. He’s very friendly and insteresting to talk to. It is essential to make reservations. This is a small and dark place. It...is expensive as well but we thought it was totally worth it. Literally the best drinks we’ve had in our life.More

We have been bar hopping every night during our holiday in japan and this is definitely the best I’ve been to. The way each drink was made was so intriguing, I could have watched it for hours! The best cocktail I had was a whisky...and matcha drink, almost like a dessert cocktail which was the perfect nightcapMore

I went here on a Friday evening with some friends. From the moment we stepped in it was a very nice experience. Everyone was very kind and friendly. I am especially thankful to our host who took great care of us as and gave us...very good recommendations. We just told her, what we prefered and she took care of the rest. I ordered 3 drinks and not one of them was a disappointment. Really nice. The price was quite reasonable for Tokyo. If you go, go to to the 9th floor. If it's busy and you can't get in. They have a waiting list and you can go back later. English communication is no problem. I will be back for sure.More

You definitely want to make a reservation here and show up on time. They have a five minute grace period. The drinks were unbelievable. The atmosphere is quiet but it’s an epic vibe. Haruko was an amazing server and insanely knowledgeable. There are no menus....You tell them what you like and they’ll make you something. It’s a waste of time if you go there and order a gin and tonic or some other generic drink. Let them make you whatever they want to make you. One of our favorite spots on the trip.More

We went without a reservation. The bar was full, but one of the waiters said we could go to their (also excellent) bar on the second floor and wait for availability. The bar downstairs had two very knowledgeable bartenders (and the Witcher 3 soundtrack), who...made an excellent negroni. Then, we were called upstairs - and it was well worth the short wait. The ambience is something like a Scottish shooting lodge owned by a vermouth connoisseur, and the theatre of Hiroyasu Kayama’s mixing is astounding. I had the signature cocktail to begin with, after I asked for something bitter, and then a smoky ginger cocktail. These were probably the best cocktails I’ve ever had.More

This little bar can be difficult to find but don’t give up, it’s on second floor and there are some signs that give you leads to the wooden door entrance. The bar specializes in fruit brandy based cocktails but can mix any cocktail to perfection....We had a couple of whisky sours that rivaled the best version of the drink I’ve ever tried. But bring a lot of patience this is a craft cocktail bar, the bartenders take it seriously and spend time perfecting it, don’t expect to be served in a flash!More

Read about this hidden gem online and set out to find it. That alone took quite a while because we kept walking right by a small sign showing the bar with a picture directing you upstairs. Took elevator up and were told they’re full before...being directed to their second bar downstairs. Walked in and seated in last two seats at the bar, everybody after us for over an hour were turned away ice full. Only menu is there is no menu, bartender asks what you like and personal drinks were created for us. All 4 we enjoyed were masterpieces, artwork and tasted great. Both young men working the bar were hospitable and welcoming, mindfully creating a drink to everybody’s liking. Dark quiet setting and they do allow smoking just to know. Moderately priced and would definitely visit again.More

The most amazing bar we've ever been to. Pro tip is to go to the 9th floor room which is the main room. It is unmarked.

Came here by chance as we were walking in the neighborhood. There are actually 2 bars, at 2 different floors. We tried first the lower floor and it was nice and all, but NOT ad fantastic as we would have hoped for. But we tried...then the one of the higher floor and we had a really great time. The bar is small and cozy, locals come and we talked to our neighbors as well as the elegant and skilled bartender. The drinks were great and delicious. As I said, came for 1, stayed for 4.More

My husband had watched the documentary Bartalk on a long-distance flight and discovered that a couple of the top 50 bars worldwide were located in Tokyo. Just like it's fun to try restaurants in different countries and cultures, it's the same for visiting bars; you...never know what kind of local ingredients or cultural twists they'll put into their cocktails. This was close to our hotel and we took a cab here, but like so many buildings in Asia, there are multiple floors at any given address. Once we figured out that the bar was located 9 floors up, we got into a very tiny, kind of sketchy elevator. When the doors opened it took our eyes a moment to adjust to the very dark atmosphere inside. And the very smoky, cigarette atmosphere inside, which ruined the experience for me a little. There were probably 8 or so other patrons in there besides us, a few at the bar and a few at the small tables. We seated ourselves at the bar, where there was a still-type contraption located in the center. When we asked what was being made, the owner/head bartender explained that he was distilling some essences, including pineapple, lemon, a few other fruits and herbs. He asked about our preferences and wrote down some things on a small pad of paper. I said I liked more tequila kinds of drinks, fruity, etc..., maybe like a Paloma, while my husband said he liked whiskey drinks along the lines of a Whiskey Sour. Instead of creating a drink catered to our tastes, as all the hype about this bar suggests, he basically then made us a Paloma and a Whiskey Sour. I didn't think anything was overwhelmingly special about either drink. Our bill was around 6,000 Y, which is a LOT for two "normal" drinks that we could've had elsewhere at a fraction of the price. I don't know about my husband, but I somewhat felt condescended to here. If someone is willing to pay that kind of money for a couple of drinks, I would think that etiquette and human courtesy would go a long way to ensuring they enjoy the experience. I don't feel that was the case here.More
