we were recommended this place by some locals and wow were they right - we came for lunch (cheaper option) expecting the place to be full but only 6 others in the restaurant - the whole experience was great watching the food being prepared, a...few saki (some of which our fellow diners shouted us - very friendly lunch crowd), nice wine - we went with the 8000 yen option - felt it offer the best range - each course was a master piece - I am not normally a fan of this type of food - but wanted to try it out and was blown away - sitting so close to everything one can't help but get great service but it was still very attentive and friendly. Yes its not cheap -we even had a nice bottle of wine to add to the bill - but I though value for money when I compared to Australian equivalentsMore

Great value for money, considering you are dining at a Michelin star restaurant. Had the 5500 yen lunch set which consisted of 7/8 courses. Quality of all the dishes was excellent and the dishes were unique and not what you typically get at a kappo...restaurant. Comes with an English menu so you know what you’re eating. Highlight for me was the grilled fish. Service was excellent and very attentive and polite.More

Not having tried kappa cuisine, we decided to go for the JPY8,000 set lunch. Seated at the counter, it was interesting to see the chefs in action but we were not allowed to photograph them. As its reputation preceded it, we expected the lunch to...be excellent and we were not disappointed. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food, all beautifully plated. We were very pleased with the lunch, being our first day of our holiday in Japan. We subsequently realised as we travelled to Kyoto and Tokyo that there were enjoyable meals in arguably better ambience that were less pricey. No regrets having dined at Kigawa though as it was a great experience if you have not tried it but I would probably not go again as it is not the best value for money.More

We took the 8,000 yen lunch set which had 10 courses. Just 12 seats on the ground floor of the restaurant, a very refined ambience. We were given an English menu of the courses which was very helpful. A lot of attention and detail has...gone into the preparation of each dish which was beautifully presented, however the portions were small. I liked the first two appetizer courses of soy milk cabbage soup and vegetables in yuzu/miso sauce, and the daikon soup; the seasonal plate was the best. Sashimi was ok, had tasted much better. Unfortunately the main course of wagyu beef was the most disappointing; it was chewy. Service was excellent and the sake we had was great. Probably won’t return though.More

My second visit this year. The food is amazing and it comes piping hot when it should be. Going back for lunch in two days time to enjoy.

Totally agree with the other 3 star reviews of this place. The taste is only average. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

We walked in by accident without a reservation. We could sit upstairs and had a chef there who made all the hot dishes. We could choose from three set-menu's. we choose the middle one and we choose right. Course after course it was a feast...for the senses. We really loved the variation and creativity used for preparing the various platters. The staff was good in English and they even presented us a in English translated menu for that day. The wonderful thing is that this superb restaurant is just a footstep away from the shopping frenzy of Osaka, and is like an oasis of calm. Save some cash from shopping and have a wonderful lunch or dinner there.More

Came here for my one high end meal while in Japan. I chose Kigawa as i read an article that recommended it. I had the 12 course meal that was 22 000 YEN + drinks. I would say 9/12 dishes were 10/10. Fantastic food! The...other 3 were top quality food, but for my taste maybe a little low on taste. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant is clean and nice with a view over the kitchen, so you can see your food being prepared. With my income I can't afford many dinners like this, but was it worth spending a 5 days food budget in one meal; Yes, definitely! :)More

Overall found most dishes to be lacking in flavour . Not sure if Kappo is meant to highlight the natural beauty of each ingredient , so much so that most dishes were very mediocre. A little more seasoning would have gone a very long way....Did not feel enough was done technique -wise to bring out deep flavours for such beautiful ingredients. For example the clear soup with ayu uruka (sweetfish guts) was a bit confusing and bland. Best dish was very westernized being one of the mains - cream croquette gratin with shrimp and a homemade tomato sauce. There was enough umaniness from the tomato and richness from the cream to satisfy. All in all, disappointed as this was my first Kappo experience.More

We booked Kigawa with the help of our friend in Japan. Reservation is highly recommended as this place is quite popular. We pre-ordered our sets for lunch (5k and 8k yen per pax) but they offered us a special menu for 7k per pax which...costs 15k for dinner. 7k yen set is a set of 10 courses. Naniwakappo in Osaka is a must and Mr. Google recommended this place. Sake - We ordered sake and shochu. They will ask which glass would you like to have. All of their glasses are different so its really up to you. 1st, kelp soup served in a very small cup (as big as our sake cup). 2nd, the whitebait which is super sweet, paired with veggies and yam. 3rd plate is interesting, the deep fried pond smelt tasted like fried chicken, so amazing to eat a fish with zero fishy smell!! squid paste and sea urchin paste - shape of a rectangular box but boy i thought i was having sea urchin itself! very very fresh! I've never had fresh sardine before, thanks for letting me know the actual taste - the canned ones are rubbish. Squid is just normal. 4th plate is one of the highlight, assorted sashimi, all paired with different herbs. 5th, a bowl of clear soup and a shrimp ball popping up - it is very refreshing and the prawn is no where to be seen as it's already mashed into a form of a ball, but wow the fresh flavouring in this meat ball is so so so good! 6th - grilled sole and shitake. pretty normal but the yuzu made it really memorable as i love yuzu. 7th, the roll sea bream with greens. Somewhat reminded me of Chinese food 8th, second highlight - the wagyu beef, which was slightly overdone so it did not melt sadly, it was chewy. 9th - rice with dried young sardine and young burdock but i they only served young sardine because they ran out of burdock? I don't know the exact reason but I was told that they are not serving it. Miso soup with leek (i thought the leek did not mix well, it tasted too "Chinese") 10th - Frozen yogurt in Jap citrus and strawberry, refreshing to end our meal! We were so so so full after 10 courses. It was a little too much for me, even though the portions are small. I was amazed with their bathroom, they even provide mouthwash! Service is impeccable, they kept checking if we needed anything and explained every single dish to us. Very very courteous, Chef Ueno himself walked us out! I have no words to describe, all I could say is this place is definitely a place to remember.More
