When in Osaka, you gotta have okonomiyaki, right? We decided on Houzenji Sampei after researching a few okonomiyaki shops. Of course, you can always get some as street food in Kuromon Market but you can't beat the places that specialize in it. Like Houzenji Sampei....With different combinations (or a design-your-own option), you can try many different flavours and tastes. The best part though is that they make the pancake for you and bring it to your tabletop grill to season and dress, unlike other places that give you the premade batter to cook yourself. For a newbie at flipping pancakes, this was godsend. We ordered 3 different pancakes and a yaki-soba for 4 people, which left us all bursting at the seams. The yakisoba was bland (perhaps, because they don't specialize in it...) but all 3 of the okonomiyaki(s) were amazing, with crisp edges and tender insides. My favourite was the Shimei mushroom + scallop + cheese option. If you're ever in Osaka, I implore you to try a specialized okonomiyaki restaraunt. I highly recommend Houzenji Sampei be that restaurant!More

It was delicious! We were looking for a place to try japanese packet and we are sure it was the best choice! Worth trying if you are in the Dotombori area, its not on plain sight but its really easy to get there!

They charged me 300 yen for canned tuna, more than they charge for pork. When confronted about the tuna, they didn't own up to it. I don't like feeling cheated, and Hozenji Sanpei definitely left me feeling cheated. You can do better than this tourist,...questionable place. I know this seems like a small thing, but the fact they wouldn't own up to their faults makes this feel like a deliberate little grift. We shouldn't encourage shady practices like this, however small, by letting them get away with it.More

We had Okonomyaki at Hozenji Sampei late on a Saturday night. Despite being nearly closing time, the place was still half-full of locals. The service was quick and friendly, and importantly the Okonomyaki was delicious. Good option for a late night feed.

This place isn’t easy to find which is just as well or you’d never get in. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced when compared to the overpriced main Dotonbori strip of restaurants. The menu is simple with three main offering - Okonomiyaki, teppanyaki,...and yakisoba but the variety of options you can create is amazing. It is very popular, with good reason, because it’s delicious. Do yourself a favor and check it out.More

We flew into Osaka and staying at a hotel near by. It was our first experience looking for addresses in japan and took us a bit to find this place, but when we did we quickly realized reserving a spot would usually be a must....They happened to squeeze us in and get us at one of the tables with a grill. The food was to die for and definitely felt perfect in our stomachs after a long day of traveling from America. I will say that since it is high up on the TA listing for Dotombori, there are a lot of westerners... so if you are looking for a place you wont hear any English, this might not be your jam. I personally don't mind as long as the food is great and the staff is nice. Both are very true here. The food was well worth the moderate price and the presentation was fun! Definitely check this place out if you are in the area.More

We waited a long time to get in here, but as I learned throughout my time in Japan, any place where a lot of locals are lined up will be extremely delicious. Once seated, we ate incredibly fluffy savoury cabbage pancakes (okonomiyaki) that Osaka is...famous for and you can add your own toppings. Kimchi, bacon, green onions was an amazing combo in it that I highly recommend. We shared one because they are HUGE and we wanted to get cheesecake at Pablo afterwards!More

This place makes good okonomiyaki. I had the mushroom, scallop, and cheese version. I love all the different combinations you can get for okonomiyaki. The place does well. Not my favorite, but quite good.
