The Crown & Tuns is favourite of ours and we missed it during lockdown. We're now venturing out to eating places again and have visited a few "Covid secure" establishments for food over the last month and this one had by far the best set up. Distancing is in place, fellow dinners seem sensible, contact details taken, staff wear masks, lots of cleaning going on and great attention to detail - your cutlery, napkins, salt & pepper etc even comes in a sealed paper bag with the date it was last handled on it. And the pies were excellent as usual. Yes, you will pay more than £13 for a pie but you are paying for a top notch pie (with lots of veg and lots of mash or chips and gravy all super tasty) cooked by a clearly excellent chef and you are paying for the great service you get from the team who ensure you're well looked after. It was a trip to pie heaven.

Last time I came here was probably in the last century when this was a typical drinking pub with darts and cards and food amounting to nothing more than crisps and nuts. This is now THE pie pub for Oxfordshire. Some commentators have remarked that the pies here are expensive, but these are not Pukka pies; indeed neither are they (very good) Pieminster pies - what we have here is a grade well above this: delicious, very large homemade pies, and a wide selection available. I opted for the Steak & Kidney pie (£14.25). This is a personal favourite of mine and was a staple on all pub menus a few years ago but is now becoming a rarity, tending to be replaced by 'Steak & Ale pie' (they do that here too!) but for me the dish isn't the same without the kidney. A delicious pie it was too, with lovely tender steak and a generous amount of kidney. This was served with chips (or you could have mash), veg and a jug of gravy. The veg was peas and carrots which are perhaps not the most inspired choice but the carrots really tasted like carrots, not the isipid orange discs that you get in so many places. The only ale on offer at the time of my visit was Hooky bitter, but it was in excellent condition. They expressed concern that beer might have to be thrown away in the event of another lockdown, hence the reduced selection. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and they seem to have the Corvid thing very well organised. I hope it won't be so long till I come here again.

Two of us went for lunch on a Friday and were warmly greeted. It was easy to social distance as tables had been removed. We both had pies, I had the mushroom, potato and tarragon and my husband had the beef, bacon and cheese and they were both very tasty. The bill was accompanied by two packets with two jelly babies each, a really nice touch. Very friendly service.

This was my first visit and it was brilliant but let down due to a couple of issues. The good - Food is fantastic! I had smokey bacon pie with mash, absolutely brilliant. good size, full of flavour, piping hot. The mash potato was also first class and I'd buy it by the bucket if I could afford to do so. Veg was basic yet cooked just the way Ilike it, steamed but not so that it falls apart on your fork. Waiting time was good, and staff well dressed, polite and with masks. decor was spot on, refurb during lockdown, it looked quality without going over the top. The bad - With pies starting at £15 and prices of beer on the wall, I didn't expect tap drinks to be nearly £4, for the price I might as well have had a beer as they're about the same price!. Gone are the days of designated driver having cheap drinks. Call me tight and yes I am to a degree but that didn't go down well with me. There was four of us three had veg and mash, the mash bowl was tiny, we ended up ordering another mash at extra cost, once finished we put the single mash bowl into the other one and it only just fit! there wasn't enough gap to with the edge of a knife. This seems stingy to me, we should have been given one of this each not a slightly bigger bowl between 3. £20+ per person, this isn't a pub chain selling 2 meals for £10. apart from the few little tweaks above, I still recommend this place and give a 4* star review because the food, staff, decor is as good as anything I've had. But being a 20+ stone guy and a stingy I have to mention it :)

Today we visited again for the first time since they opened. It was very easy to book over the phone the night before for the time we wanted. We were warmly welcomed (as always) and directed around to our table. A one way system is in place too. Our table had a paper bag with cutlery, sauces and a sanitising wipe in each. I’ve not had this service in a pub since COVID and was a nice reassurance that they are looking after us. We both had a pie, delicious as always. The prices are competitive with other Oxfordshire pubs and aren’t overpriced in our opinion. Freshly made and always tasty. You certainly get your monies worth. During these times it’s always important to support our local independents when we can, and there’s no where else nearby who do such great pies. Can’t wait to be back once again!

What an amazing place!!! First of all the staff are outstanding. Whether you pop in for a quick drink or two or want to sit and eat, they are so welcoming and polite. Ambur and Vicky are just brilliant and will do what they can to assist. Cathy and Anton know what they are good at and excel in it...PIES! Always warm and welcoming to everyone, including dogs. There is a very good size outside space with a pool table and is the perfect summer place to chill and also a lovely open log fire indoors for those more chilly days. The food is exceptional and just gets better everytime. **Be warned you may not be hungry when you enter but the smell and look of those pies will make you wanna eat one ** You won’t leave there feeling hungry, that’s for sure, I couldn’t recommend it more...

We were passing and realised we were running too late for lunch elsewhere so stopped at the Crown and Tuns. The waitress said we could eat if we ordered within 5 minutes as the kitchen was about to close. If you don't like pies this is perhaps not the place for you, There is a huge and varied selection which covers all options. We chose a steak and kidney plus the moroccan lamb with apricots. Both arrived within moments, how do they produce them so quickly? They were substantial and delicious. Many thanks, we will certainly return when passing again.

We were recommended this restaurant by a couple in our hotel (in Bicester) we visited about 7.00 on a Wednesday evening and it was very busy we were told it would be a 1/2 hour wait but it was no longer than 15 minutes. There are no menus the pies are all listed on the wall (might have helped being told this whilst waiting for the table). The pies were fantastic and there is something for everyone. I had beef mushroom red wine and horseradish and hubby had the steak and kidney both were first class. We would definitely return if we are ever in the area again

Unplanned trip out for Friday evening meal. Met with a lovely welcome from a staff member who explained all the Covid measures. The log fire was lovely and nice on a cold evening. The selection of pies made it hard to chose, but I opted for the peppercorn steak and my husband had the BBQ chicken. Service was very prompt and the food was piping hot. The pies are massive and absolutely delicious!!!!! Served with chips and vegetable and washed down with a wee glass of wine. I truly needed a corner to sleep in after such a lovely meal. Absolutely no complaints from us at all. Perfect service from start to finish!!!! We will most certainly be back.

I take my hat off to the new management of this pub. Building your own good reputation from zero is hard graft but Ged and his team are doing an excellent job. They are - wisely - keeping to a fairly narrow menu which allows them to keep the quality up and the price competitive. All the dishes we had were very good, portion sizes were generous but not excessive. Hook Norton beer is a good starting point but the wines available were wide ranging, carefully chosen and well balanced. The service was attentive and friendly, polite and enthusiastic. Getting to the number one spot in Deddington and so soon is no mean feat. Their reputation is building up well as the other reviews testify and I wish them every success as they definitely deserve it.

Thanks for such a positive review, it really is ‘hard graft’ but reviews like this and the excellent comments we get from customers make it all worth while. Hope to see you again soon!

On a recent trip to Oxfordshire, the Crown and Tuns were recommended to us. The food here is incredible, but word of warning, make sure you are hungry before you go. They specialise in pies. They don’t take booking at night, first come, first served. There is a great selection and you are spoilt for choice, It was full the night we went, everything is freshly prepared, but you didn’t wait too long. Pies come with a selection of fresh vegetable, potatoes or chips. If you have room, con definitely recommend the Apple and Sultana Pie with custard for desert. Really wish that it was nearer, but we will be going back. Really recommend this pub.

Really disappointed with the trip advisors as much as the pub. This was our first time here so we were looking forward to it based on the recent reviews. I rang and tried to book a table for 6:00 to 6.30 and was encouraged to make it 6 as they were busy later. When we turned up we were the only people there for half an hour and then 2 other couples came in before we left at 7:25pm. We ordered the dough balls to start and the garlic butter was frozen. The menu of lots of different pies on offer from the previous tenants was still visible but not on offer. The menu was very limited unless you wanted pizza. I ordered the crown burger because the confit duck leg was unavailable. My partner ordered the chicken chasseur. The burger came out on the smallest plate I have ever seen a main course served on in a pub or restaurant and it was tiny. It was £16 and an extra £1 for the cheese and another £1.50 for the single slice of bacon. The portion of fries came in a mug size cup! The chicken chasseur sauce was see through and was extremely watery and wasn't right. It came with no veg and a similar size portion of chips to mine and that was it! £42.50 for one portion of dough balls and 2 mains. The most disappointing thing was the way that our complaint was dealt with by the manager and staff. Nothing not even an apology. We eat out every week and have only had to stop on the way home once before to get something more to eat. This was the second time!!

Thanks for taking the time to write a review, we do take note if we think the comments are valid. However I think we were on a hiding to nothing from the moment you walked in and discovered that the ‘pie pub’ had long since gone. You quite aggressively berated a member of staff complaining that we should have taken off all the photos of their food and pictures of their menu from the ‘pie pub’ from trip advisor. It was politely explained to you that it wasn’t possible to remove customer pictures from Trip advisor (I wish we could). Moving on to some of the points you raised in the review and complained about at the time. Booking time - You asked to book at 6.30, but as explained on the phone we already had a booking for a table of 8 for that time so you agreed to book for 6pm as we don’t like our customers having to wait too long for their order. The table of eight booked had to rearrange the booking as a member of the group had fallen ill. Unfortunately these things happen. Limited menu - We are a small pub with a small kitchen. We offer 7 starters and 12 main courses (not including Pizza), all our dishes are made from scratch with nothing ‘bought in’. Unfortunately the Duck Leg wasn’t available that evening. Small plate - I’m not even sure what to say about this ‘complaint’? Portion of Fries - the ‘mug’ you reference is actually sold as a ‘chip cup’, many pubs/restaurants use them. Chasseur sauce - That sauce is meant to be ‘see through’, it’s a three Michelin stared Michel Roux recipe from his renowned book ‘Sauces, Savoury and sweet’. But as we do take complaints seriously after reading your review I tried some of the batch of sauce we served you. I’m sorry it wasn’t to your taste, but it was how I intended it to be both from a taste and texture point of view. The Chicken Chasseur - “It came with no veg and a similar size portion of chips to mine and that was it!” Actually it’s normally served with a generous portion of Gratin Dauphinois, but you asked to change that for chips, and we happily obliged. Really Poor customer service - You say that you didn’t receive an apology, this isn’t true, your server listened to your complaints and apologised for the fact you didn’t enjoy you meal. However your complaints were made after you’d both eaten everything on your plates, had you complained earlier we could have happily offered you an alternative. We are lucky enough to receive many great reviews for our food, service and hospitality, as you note in your review. Unfortunately the old adage ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time’ comes to mind and I am disappointed you didn’t enjoy your visit, we only want happy customers.

We were browsing the weekday menu and the chef came out and told us it was the Sunday lunch menu today so there wasn't any confusion. My partner didn't fancy a roast but I did so we went in and I'm bloody glad we did! We sat outside in what is a very pleasant pub garden, nicely laid out with space for everyone. I ordered the beef, I've not had a finer roast in a long long while. The meat was beautifully cooked and as tender as you could hope for not a scrap of gristle, potatoes nice and crispy on the outside without being dry, good carrots not soggy ones, nice rich gravy and my partner was so jealous of it all she polished off the cauli cheese herself which she said the most indulgent she'd ever had. All of the staff were attentive and friendly, everything was served quickly and plates taken away equally so when finished. The chef came out and chatted and told us the meat was sirloin which explained how tender it was. We saw on our way out the staff being fed properly and served by the chef which seems very much in keeping with what is a very nice pub atmosphere and a close knit happy group of staff. We will bring friends and have already recommended to several.

I really enjoyed the visit with my family today. The service was really good and the hist was very interactive. We were trying the pay what you think it's worth menu and we really enjoyed the food. I felt the cod was very salt and the the salmon dish has room from improvement. The Lamb dish was lovely and well cooked. We look forward to returning :)

I’ve been here many times as a couple. 1 bowl for veg 1 bowl for mash with your pies which is value you money. I came as a 4 for the first time. 3 people ordered mash and one chips. 1 bowl of veg to serve 4 people. 1 bowl of mash to serve 3 people and a bowl of chips. This is not value for money, I asked for more mash which we were charged extra for. The conclusion is if you come with more than 2 people it’s not worth due to the portions. The customer service is great always polite and on point. Great atmosphere, I will come again but just as a couple
