We visited for Lunch for my wife's birthday, its been many years since we have been to the Malt Shovel and I can say it won't be long before we go back. It's called a country pub but in reality it is a restaurant and a damn fine one at that, the menu is typical British Gastro and wonderful, lots... More

Our first visit with some friends who are local and visit the malt shovel regularly. Have to say the food and service were both excellent Ox cheeks were just amazing! Just a shame we're not local! Will definitely revisit when back in the area.

This gastropub would definitely be a 4/5* had we not had to wait 1 hour for main courses. The staff were fantastic and did all they could to make us feel welcome and the food eventually was of fantastic quality. The pub did have a few large groups in which slowed down the food being made so check and book... More

Lovely 3 course Sunday lunch, in a cosy pub hidden away near Ripon. Great, prompt service and a toasty fire

Went here with our elderly parents and It's always great when you are greeted by a great smile and very friendly face when being shown to your table which we had booked the previous day. There was a good selection on the menu and specials board. The well presented food was excellent and met everyone's expectations. If you are thinking... More

Have visited on a number of previous occasions, the last being January 2017. Never disappoints, from friendly staff to the service, lovely cosy surroundings to top class food. Presentation is superb which only works as long as the food is also superb and it is totally outstanding. Only slight downside and appreciate why, but the length of time between starter... More

Sunday lunch. Went as a family of 5 including 2 teenagers and a 10 year old. Called just 30 mins in advance to book as we live quite near and got a table ok. The Sunday menu offers beef, pork or chicken breast dinners all with the traditional Yorkshire pudds, veg etc. There are also other dishes and 3 of... More

Absolutely our favourite restaurant currently and so glad we discovered this perfect gem at the end of Summer'16. Simply love everything about the Malt Shovel, quaint pretty village setting, cosy, warm tasteful pub interior with quirky little candle lit tables, fabric napkins (a must for me!), Yorkshire stone floors, roaring fires, lovely friendly and professional staff who take great pride... We visited this hostelry on the way back from Ripon at lunchtime after a search on TripAdvisor. Its a lovely, well maintained bar/ restaurant , sympathetically restored. The tables are well set out and plenty of space between. The menu is not extensive, which I totally approve of, but all ingredients are locally sourced. The waitress was lovely and cheerful....
